Eric Marienthal has such a great sound and so much comfort on the instrument. The reason for his smoothness is really because he is so much master of the saxophone, and not for trying to force smoothness, if you know what I mean. Always loved his "grandpa" old school tenor sound by the way, which is quite a bit more laid back and cozy than his amazing alto playing. Marenthal is so underrated amongst the populi. Anyone with an ear knows this guy is the real deal. And, he’s working with one of Lee’s best songs.

Stop saying “underrated.” This guy is one of the most successful saxophonists of the 20th & 21st centuries. You people think Jesus Christ, Al Pacino & Babe Ruth are all “underrated” - enough already. Use your brain and stop repeating words just because you hear other people use them.

Eric Marienthal is highly highly underrated amongst jazz saxophone players, and is quite often swept under the rug and overlooked. But him, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Everette Harp and Andy Snitzer are the contemporary guys who have some jaw dropping chops. Eric got that gig with Chick Corea right out of Berklee, when he was around 21. He had it together at 21. That is insane.

Damn! I've always loved Eric Marienthal's playing. And I know how much of a monster he is. I saw him live back in the day with Chick Corea's Elektric Band when they first started and he was smokin'! But this cut with him in tenor! Damn! What a great sound! He sounds like a tenor player - not an alto player playing tenor. Bright, tight, and edgy. Ugh!

Marienthal was always No.1 melodical, the smoothest sounding saxophonist ever! have met with him after gig! Very humble guy .... still my No.1 player on this instrument since 1999 (at the age of 15 i discovered whole Electric Band 1987 live concert )

I first learnt about him through exactly this Overtime live years ago when my bro bought this DVD. This DVD also happened to be my gateway drug to jazz. At first I thought he was JUST a great smooth jazz player...But only a couple years later I saw he was in Chick Corea's Elektric Band and I was like "ah ohhh"...He can pretty much play anything GREAT.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist and am teaching myself sax. When guys hit those As an octave above the first ledger line above the staff, is that overtone work? I've always called it altissimo but I haven't seen special fingering charts for notes that are that low.

it's more of a "yes! keep going!" mood. it goes there. it sounds good, and you begin floating on the melody. the melody is good, it resonates with me. it's like the saxophone is singing, without even being English. atleast that's what it means to me. it's so nice, it transcends the generic music you'd hear at any of the places you just mentioned.

At least you're willing to admit that this is SMOOTH JAZZ. Eric Marienthal has received so much for praise for how great he is at "jazz," when in reality he's simply a glorified smooth jazz saxophonist. Whatever style he wants to play I don't care about, but he's not really a great jazz saxophonist.
