Hello Smart Trucking I really enjoy your videos. It’s like a class room for me because I learn a lot from your videos. No doubt Trucking is stressful. But I think if we manage all things properly, trucking is not that bad. Do not allow your work to ruin your personal life. If your work is affecting your personal life, take a week or a month off and settle everything with a plan. In one of your videos you taught how to drive in a bad weather. You said to stop and find a safe place and wait for weather to get better before you hit the road again. But in my case, 2 months ago, I was heading from Toronto to Winnipeg highway 17 near Nipigon apx 200 km behind Nipigon. It was the night time around 2:00 AM. It was snowing heavily. While climbing a hill, drive tires were slipping. Any how I managed to get up hill. Then there was a down hill coming up ahead. I reduced the speed. Got myself ready for downhill. When down hill started, headlights went off due to some electrical problem. It was dark, no street lights. All dark. I made a mistake and hit the breaks hard. Due to snow, stear tires slipped and I was not knowing in which direction my truck was going. I heard rattling from under the truck. I soon realised that it was the edge of the road. In one of your videos u taught how to control the truck while driving on the edges. I used that technique and got traction and safely got to the bottom of the hill. What the scary night it was. Thank you for saving me

I'm thinking about getting out of trucking for good. Too much bs. All of the hours i spend each week and being home a few days a month isn't worth it. I would earn more money working a normal job at 60-65 hours per week and be home daily. DOT, bad weather, dispatchers, 4wheelers, governed trucks, traffic jams and many other reasons.
@icallmybabystp
@icallmybabystp 2 жыл бұрын
The unfortunate part about a "normal" job is that the hours just are not there anymore. Before I got my CDL, I was making $20 an hour at a retail job, but the hours were so inconsistent and I could never rely on getting the same paycheck every couple of weeks. I did regional with Schneider to get some experience in and after dividing my gross pay and hours on duty, my hourly pay came out to around 14.90 an hour. Working 60-70 hours a week and sleeping in a shitty distribution center yard that was impossible to leave without your own car there. Now, I'm working a local food service delivery job. Pay is insanely good, best money I've ever made, but also the most physically demanding job I will ever have in my life. Only been at it for a few months now and each day gets A LITTLE better, but I've thought about throwing in the towel so many times within a few months due to equipment issues, greasy restaurant floors, pulling hundreds of pounds upstairs in buildings that won't let you use their elevator. But, I sleep in my bed every night and the pay is the best I've ever had in my entire life. I don't really think there's such a thing as a good trucking job (at least in the beginning), but there's definitely money to be made to create a better life for yourself if you're willing and able to make some BIG sacrifices

This video unfortunately is where I am at! I hate, hate, hate the profession anymore! It has shaved years off my life! And, it's sad.....because, it was not always that way! My Dad gave his life to driving truck after getting out of the Army.....and, for 20 years now I have tried to follow his awesome example as a truck driver. Back in his day, it was a great profession to be in.....now, it's SHIT!!! I will be 60 soon, and I am working on an exit plan from this god awful profession and all that goes with it! It's really sad and heartbreaking for me to have given so much to the profession of sweat and blood, to see it the way I do today! The f-cking trucking companies, the DOT, those damn f-cking weasel brokers, and the demanding and totally unreasonable and out-of-control shippers and receivers have changed the industry for ever.....and for the WORST!!! =# =@

I cried every day my first month driving. Couldn't pay the bills since I was making less than minimum wage. My personal relationships were being strained; gor some reason my family and friends thought I could control my hometime lol. Then I got focus. Reminded myself that it would not be forever, at the three month mark changed carriers for more hometine and more money. At the two year mark got my own truck. Almost at my 5 year mark to get my second truck and my first driver. The 5 year will be postponed to 5 1/2 due to covid. But having a plan, talking to close friends snd loved ones, reminding yourself daily what you plan is can help a lot. I'm an otr driver but a homebody at heart. My seven year plan to stay home dispatching my fleet and making sure my drivers have it better than I did.

I was liked that for sure. I switch carriers and positions and I had better out come. I was with Swift as a OTR for a year. Not going to lie I hated it a lot I did all 48 states I felt like I was alone and I wasn’t making money. The Dispatch would bother me when I would try to sleep. So much was going on worrying about weather or being pulled in or over by the DOT and being away from family sucked. Then when I got a chance to switch to YRC/Yellow into yard. I did and I love being in the yard as a yard driver. I make $25.51hr work steady 8hrs each day and have 2 days off. I get great health benefits for me and my soon to be wife and son. I get sick, personal and vacation time. I would never change or give up my job. It was hard work to get their. I look back and Thank Swift for the opportunity for helping me get my CDL license but also glad that I am not with them anymore. Their were times I just want to just give up and I worry about my future and well being. When they say trucking is hard. It is really hard. I respect all truck drivers don’t matter who you drive for, new or experience drivers you have my RESPECT!

I've been trucking off and on since age 18 with a CDL-B then class A once I turned 21. I've missed birthdays, lost relationships, important events, alot of my son growing up. I'm lucky enough to be in a local job now but my back is screwed up and I don't know how much longer I can drive these hard riding dump trucks. I'm getting fed up with all the micromanaging, all the new regulations, BS and the pay isn't much better than when I first got into the business... I just feel stuck because this still eats up a majority of my time, my body isn't getting any younger and the business isn't getting any better 😒

Had Demolition business till Covid came around I had to switch things up started working for a local company. Starting pay is $1500 a week for me if you’re reliable on time and honest you will get a job. My terms with the owner was that I got a raise to 2 grand a week within six months the new standard is about 100 K in the industry now . I’m home every night. Kind of a good time drivers are in need especially reliable ones good luck .. (new Jersy ). But definitely say goodbye to eight hour workdays. I work 12

I had a love, hate relationship with trucking years ago. I took a few years off and came back hauling gravel with a old Mack that I bought the first 2 years then I went and bought a old 94 Pete 379 and pretty much rebuilt it and just do short haul with it. Work about 2-3 days a week if I want. Life is much easier nowadays than in the past. Oh I also got a newer model wife that actually supports what I do. That makes life much easier.

Personally for me, I love trucking. I have my own truck, anticipating on buying a few more next year, plan on getting a small company going, start in real estate, and still drive occasionally even when I don’t need to. I love the open road, meeting people across the country, seeing different places. The problem I think most people have is they look at it as a job, they don’t take time on resets to go see places, they go into truck stops keeping to themselves where I invite other drivers to join and eat together, so many drivers don’t make the most out of the job. They don’t enjoy it, and it’s just a paycheck for them. When I go on vacation to see family, travel, etc, I miss being in my truck.

Thanks for that. I left long hauling and selling my rig for a girl. Black holes in some trips. ( yes.. that far back, no electronic tracking). Dispatch kept pushing, because I’d deliver. 41 years later, still with same girl. Worth it? You bet. Miss it? Sometimes. Love your posts.

Complaining and being upset doesn’t get you no where. Just find happiness in the small things, being angry about your job just fills your heart with bitterness and then it trickles into other areas of your life outside of trucking. Life is good, just slow down and be grateful your heart still beats and have the ability to enjoy beautiful scenery’s throughout the drive. Stay safe guys, God goes before you and He is always with you!

Wow, a lot of disgruntled drivers out there. I feel bad for them. I’m one of the few that actually still likes trucking. I’m blessed, I have a pretty good situation. Owner operator, dedicated route, great carrier, great pay, steady home time. Not everyone has that, so believe me, I get it. I remember being off for four weeks last year when I had my shoulder surgery, I couldn’t wait to get back out there. Same with my 10 weeks off for my two carpal/cubital tunnel surgeries last October and November. I couldn’t wait to go back to work and I was much happier once I did. Call me crazy…😂

Completely agree man. I feel like most of the people that complain about this profession are the ones getting pennies per mile as a company driver, constantly being told what to do and where to go. I've been there man it really sucks. Independent with paid off equipment is golden. The best company you can work for is your own. No one will ever pay you more than you are willing to pay yourself.

Well said. I started trucking 2019. Pulling reefer as teams. Quit after 2 months and went back doing demolition work. Decided in 2020 I wanted to try a different approach and do flatbed like I wanted at first. I love it. However I quit the company only because a friend convinced me LTL was better. Boy was I wrong. I went back to the same flatbed company Jan 2021 and have been there since. Yes I had my pissed off moments. Mostly from certain shippers but I’ve learned how to ignore it over time. It’s not for everyone. It’s a constant turning and burning lifestyle. You don’t stop. You stop. The money stops. But I love it. I followed many of your videos Dave. Respectfully, if you can not stand food service, I really doubt you will do much better in trucking. I really do hope you find something better, but until you can figure out how to enjoy or at least tolerate whatever you are doing, you will not be happy working. It can be difficult, but try to find the best of whatever you do and try to not let the bad parts get to you. Every job has positive and negative aspects, if you focus too much on the negatives or if there are no positives to it, you will be miserable.

This is a good video Dave and I think the reason why people are hate trucking is due to the fact that the pay is low and the hours are long plus your carrier really wants you to spend an eternity on the road. Plus the garbage they're hiring and put behind the wheels is making the industry even harder because they would rather pay them a lower cents per mile than to give experienced drivers raises

Well that was me, I'm one of those Truckers that have love and hate on the trucking Job. When I got out of Military USMC, I quickly searched for civilian job then I found the trucking company that hauls refrigerated Freights all over the United States one of them are Marten Transportation, Prime and Central Refrigerated (now owns by Swift Transportation) I got hired by Central Refrigerated in Salt Lake City, UT because of the Military and Veteran Program. I only worked for Central Refrigerated as a company driver for 4 years then I quit and moved to Prime Refrigerated as a Owner Operator/Least Driver for 3 years for the total of only 7 years trucking, quit again and I used all of my saved money in the bank to get me a new profession I took a trade school for Building Maintenance, Electrician, and Carpentry Residential Construction/Framing. I purchased a small box truck, and tools and Powertools and other stuffs, got some business license and insurance And that's what I am now a Carpenter, Framer, Deck Builder, Electrician, Plumber and Welder and I'm on a business for 12 years now. And I love it. But still I missed Trucking so much, I love the and appreciate each and every Place I went and the truck stops too. My fellow contractors wouldn't believe me that you can take a shower in the truck stop using accumulated points from the Diesel Fuel or you pay it. You can also get Free Coffee points too. I loved and missed the smell of Diesel in the morning, shifting gears, floating gears or double clutching. The only thing I hated are the dispatchers, clients and shipping Fuck em'. They wouldn't believed me until now I still have my CDL Class A I kept it. And I'm getting CDL Class every 2 years even when I'm not Driving.

I sold my tractor in March of 2020 after being an owner operator for 30 years. The company I was leased to begged me to come back as a company driver . I tried that for 3 months and quit for good. I have been very happy and my health has also improved, no more stress and aggravation. I found a business where I am self employed and when I get the "wander lust" urge I take a road trip cross country in my pickup.

When your company chooses to take money out your paycheck because the "new" trailer tire you got, turns out to be a failed recap tire. So the company charges you for the new tire ($619.91) and blames you for it. How about, nope. I know the problem has been fixed but still, that's a huge no go. I can't wait to find something else with much better pay. I can't deal with it any more. Too much bullshit. I don't have to patience with bullshit.

Need some input guys, non trucker here. Are the majority of the problems with OTR and large carriers? I work around a lot of job sites and after talking to a few drivers I run into, I’m seriously considering getting into local aggregate, bulk or hazmat driving. My GI Bill should cover CDL school and I’m just tired of supervising people, I’d rather just be stuck in a truck driving around all day. Any pros and cons from local guys?

I run local, but I'm in a tourist location. We're, I'm pretty sure, the biggest waste company in the country, but the equipment is always breaking, the routing makes me want to choke someone daily and the traffic is ridiculous. Micromanagement is insane, we can't get to 60 hours in a week without someone freaking out, but we're routed for 80 hrs. Honestly if you want to get paid way too much and not enough at the same time, locals a good start

I work local hauling fuel, absolutely love my job. Never been OTR. Home every night, regular shifts, paid by the hour. Never have to worry about parking, waiting at shippers, living out of truck stops, etc. The only cons I suppose is not getting to travel the country. Would totally recommend local work if you can.

+Geoff Peterson Been driving 7 years, all of it local. You couldn’t pay me enough to run OTR, just not worth it to me. Biggest pro of course is getting home daily, depending on the work it often pays better than long haul, as much of it is more specialized than just general freight. Cons are dispatch will milk every minute they out of you, 13 hours is a short day for me. A lot of it is graveyard shift/ overnight type of schedule. You’ll be in and out of the truck alot more if that bothers you, and you’ll come home dirty depending on what you do. To me, it’s all totally worth it. One part of the industry that isn’t talked about much is hauling trash. Transfer stations to furnaces or landfills. Good money in it, and if you can get past the “ick” factor of having to climb through the load to tarp and untarp it isn’t bad. That’s what I’ve done for the past 4 years and don’t plan on getting out of it

I started local in 1999 hauling bulk cement. Back then i was working 70 hrs a week! I moved to a LTL co. and worked between 50 to 55 hrs a week and then went linehaul pulling doubles. There is good money, but you should know you have to be really flexible ( no 9 to 5 ) in your schedule. You may start at a different time everyday and you go home when they say you can. There are very few great driving jobs and every driver is looking for them, but you may luck into one. In a nutshell i raised my kids and missed things like football practice and such, but i was home every weekend. Monday through Friday you really can't plan anything without taking a day off (if they will give it to you). Just remember trucking in general isn't a 40hr. a week job and if your going to do it your better your better off starting young so you can change careers if it isn't for you. I have made a good living driving 22 yrs. but i can sum it up by saying it was long hours and sacrifice.

I love trucking, in itself. I love driving around, I love having my dog and my old lady riding around with me, (dog is great at guarding the cab, woman is a hell of a cook) The pay is good, and my dispatchers are pretty cool. The thing I can’t stand about trucking, is the damn industry and the way it’s become. The way everything is so over-regulated, having to run on ELOGs, being treated like dirt by shippers, parking at trashy run-down truck stops, dealing with stupidass illiterate flip-flop wearing foreigners, emission restrictions, and just the way every fun/cool aspect of driving a semi-truck gets governed or neutered by the tree huggers. Eff these new Tupperware trucks. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk ✋🏻 | 🎤
