Just check any animated show that is originally made in english and after check some animated shows that are made originally in japanese! And after check some dubbed anime (especially after you watched animations originally made in english...like Invincible let's say). The english voice acting is not bad, but it's terribly bad in the dubs. The eng dubs (specifically) sounds (most of the time) like that the voice "actors" are just reading the translated script...with zero emotions coming from his mouth.
@michaelarchangel422 жыл бұрын
Subs are legit trash. Japanese VAs are literal ass. And ffs, half the time they don't even match the voices to the characters.
@kakyoinsearings70362 жыл бұрын
Eh I’d have to disagree. While already knowing the language could come into play, the voice acting industry in Japan is taken way more seriously and the quality is generally way better than any English dubbing. Voice acting there is a very competitive field and a lot of the times only the best of the best get the role, while in America you have situations where you hear the same persons voice in like five different animes and any odd Joe can get a role, regardless of their ability. I’d say sub is objectively better because of the sheer quality difference, that’s not to say that you can’t enjoy dubs though
@dusty_giraffe21112 жыл бұрын
Japanese dubs are well respected even in Japan, because the VAs are actually VAs. Meanwhile, in the Western side of the world, voice actors in big budget movies are the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Chris Pratt, or Will Smith. They're not really voice actors in the first place. There are actual English voice actors, but they're often neglected in favour of well-known celebrities. When you really think about it, why would you ever want to hear Ellen Degenerate voice Dory rather than literally anyone else? Personally, I still prefer watching everything in the original language. But as a person that has watched literally every single episode of Pokémon all the way up to Sun and Moon in the English dub, I think I am more than qualified enough to criticise English dubs.
@pokefire52 жыл бұрын
@@dusty_giraffe2111 ... That last part makes no sense. Just because you've watched one anime from beginning to end in English, doesn't mean you can equally critique English dubs as a whole. Pokemon went through a major shift during Battle Frontier, because 4Kids lost the rights to dub Pokemon. During the earlier episodes of Battle Frontier Ash sounded pretty bad, but as the show went on the new voice actress grew into the role, making Ash sound similar to how he used to, especially as she really found her footing during the Diamond And Pearl series, as well as Black and White. Now, had you said 'I've seen (list 5 to 7 shows here) in English, so I feel like I know what I'm talking about) I wouldn't have said anything.

Another issue is poor translations. This doesnt matter for every anime, but it can really effect the meaning of some lines in some anime which can lead to missed plot points or significance. Poor translations are more common in dubs because they have to actually make the voice clip line up with the lip movements as best they can. In sub they can just write the translation even if its too long or too short because you're just reading it. So Sub translations are usually more accurate which can be important in some shows.

That, and the horrible attempts at pronouncing Japanese names. I think that's where Dragon Ball's dub really shined. Not only are most of the names not even Japanese to begin with, but the English dub opted to slightly alter the names that would've otherwise sounded awkward in English (Bulma instead of Buruma, Krillin instead of Kuririn, Master Roshi instead of Muten Roshi). The only one that still sounded awkwardly Americanized that I can remember is Yajirobe. I think dub watchers are blissfully unaware of these things though, because they haven't heard the original audio to compare and realize how bad some of the pronunciations are.

I must be a Demi-god. (edit) among anime watchers. I can watch both. Subs only if the anime interests me enough to not care, like Engage Kiss (would've finished it subbed, but forgot about it when it was airing weekly) or when there isn't a chance of a hitch pitched character (I have auditory sensitivity, so certain voices are horrible for me and make me flinch. Worse with weather not being calm) or when I can put my attention mostly into the anime. Dubs are far more convenient as I could play it and not worry about voices or can't focus mostly on it. This is why I always check for dubs. The least most important part for dubs, is when it doesn't fully interest.

First and foremost, another great video Cilvanis! I want to throw this out there for anyone who bothers to read this. It doesn't matter how you decide to enjoy a show or movie. Be it in your native language, or in its original language with subtitles. Truthfully, it really doesn't matter. Some people can feel the emotion and weight in a voice in Japanese, even when it isn't their native language, and some can do the same when they're speaking in their native language. Some people like to read subs, others don't. English dubs have had ups and downs in the past, and not every Japanese voice actor is perfect.

I like dubs simply because it’s less work for my brain. Generally the idea for entertainment is to keep you entertained without you having to do anything. Having to read subtitles makes watching something take more brain power and can cause discomfort especially for those who have trouble reading fast or even reading in general. I’ll watch subbed if there’s no dub available and the show looks good but for the sake of comfort I usually prefer dub, and most dubs these days are pretty well done.

I prefer sub, I just love the talent that the japanese VA's have, for example in AOT neither the english dub or the spanish dub (my native language) were as good as the original, so yeah but I totally understand and respect people that prefer dubs because thats why dubs exist so people can enjoy shows in their native language, and a lot of people dont like reading, I have been watching anime for a lot of years now so im just used to reading and watching a show, and I prefer watching whatever show in its original language not only anime because imo most media is better in their original form and also my mom prefers sub as well but because she has hearing problems so she definetly needs subtitles to understand a show, but Yeah I find very annoying When people fight about this shit, like just watch however you want and shut the fuck up.

I used to watch dubs alongside subs back in the day as of these past recent years, I can't stop cringing if I listen to certain voice actors voicing certain characters. But I've also felt that once about subs. Like you know when you envision what the characters would (maybe even should) sound like in your head when you watch either sub or dub but then when you go listen to the alternative, it doesn't match up and it's like nails on a chalkboard. I watched Soul Eater, Panty & Stocking, Black Butler, and D.Gray Man, Fullmetal Alchemist, in dubs and they were fantastic (just to name a few that were most memorable to me). If were to go back and listen to them, I wouldn't have an issue. However, when I tried to continue D.Gray Man in subs after the dubs stopped (like why...) and had to hear Todd Haberkorn's wonderful voice as Allen💕 go from that to some pipsqueak voice 😩 I was in devastated. Nevertheless, dub can be good, obviously, whether that's a few select characters or the whole cast. But what really grinds my gears are the dubs in Asian dramas. Those are quite literally abominations of the dub world. Squid Games...I'm talking to you.
