I don’t know how the translation works, but for the Madara susanoo scene in English he was talking to kabuto when kabuto insinuated that he “upgraded” madara. So when he says this isn’t power of your creation he’s talking directly to kabuto.

As a thinking-human being with taste, not a single human-being would like a rip-off more than the original. So, no, as a Native English-speaker, dub isn't even watchable. This is just common sense. WTF is wrong with humanity

@@findtruth5329 Dragon ball disagrees. So do I. Dubbing's not rip-off, it's just translated into a language so it's easier to understand. Although Naruto's dub ain't that great, your claim is quite bold and disrespectful.

@@ashaqulalam9327 Anybody with half a modicum of self-respect and a working brain would easily choose a subtitle over a dub. This is a no-brainer and dubs are for no-brainers lol When you dub a show, you're literally watching something that the creator did not intend. So, it is indeed a rip-off. Also, you've never heard the phrase "lost in translation"? As you watch subs, you start to learn the language and you come to realize, well, you may once you get older, how bad a dub AND a sub can be. You're not watching the show the creator intended and you're losing a LOT of what's being conveyed. I don't expect children to understand. A human-being would naturally grow toward what is better and would naturally choose what is better. If you're unable to discern what is better, something is clearly wrong with you and "people" like you. No amount of explaining will fix this. Either you get it or you don't and you clearly don't so I'll just move on. I literally learned like 50% of the Japanese I knew at that time from watching Naruto from 2002 to 2012. Bye!

Believe me man, its even weirdo for us brazilians since the translation goes first to english or spanish then brazilian portuguese. They do apply expressions to fit our culture but sometimes it hide the original meaning which is not dubs fault. Id stay with sub, i really enjoy when they put on top of the screen the real meaning of expressions or popular saying like the japanese version of '' speak is silver and silence is gold '' (dunno if thats right in english lol) hope u understand me xD again, great content bro. going to check other videos RIGHT NOW XD

It’s interesting to see someone who’s a Japanese speaker talk about their take on sub vs dub based on the actual Japanese phrasing and meaning behind the words but let’s be honest, what’s probably 99% of the comments being native English speakers here they wouldn’t pick up on any of that nuance, they just listen to the voices and the emotion. Madara by sound alone is just superior Than his og sub counterpart in my and I believe the majority of Naruto watchers. “Wake up to reality”.

My contention with sub versus dub has never really been about the complete accuracy of the translation, there will always be interpretation with translation, it comes with the territory. My big thing is how that interpretation can affect characterization. Luckily it's not nearly as bad as it used to be, at least they don't change character names and entire plot lines these days.

I have watched Naruto both ways and I agree that sub is better in most anime’s. They are closing the gap in current anime’s but often I find that the voice inflection is better with the originals. I appreciate you explaining the cultural significance of those scenes, and it does have a greater impact understanding that. However, one think I noticed is that you keep saying “if you speak Japanese…” which I think is a no-brainer. If I spoke Japanese fluently I would most likely watch it in Japanese. But I don’t, so my options are either dub or sub. One way or another the dialogue will have to be translated into English for me to follow what’s going on. The issue comes when the translation varies between a direct translation or a cultural one. In most subs the translation is direct, which often leaves me not understanding what’s actually happening because I don’t understand those nuances of the Japanese language. But there are other things that make it easier to understand when watching the dub. The tone and voice inflections of the VA as well as emphasis or certain words or parts of a sentence can entirely change the meaning of two identical sentences. And as a native English speaker those are the things that I rely on to understand those same nuances you mentioned in Japanese. That’s the reason I prefer to watch dub. Not because it’s better but because it makes for a better and clearer understanding entertainment experience for me.

I think that for those with exposure to both, there is general agreement about subs being better. However, the dub for Naruto is awfully good, compared to other shows. There are less obvious examples of a single person doing many characters, and occasionally sounding inconsistent with certain characters. There are also less examples of various characters sounding the same, compared to other shows in dubbed form. I first started Naruto with subs, but then I heard an example of the dub on KZbin. I ended up switching to dubs. THEN, there was a point, where dubs weren't available for the episodes I was watching, so I switched back to subs. What I found, was I really liked the English voices of most of the characters. I felt they matched well, in most cases. I felt that even though the translations weren't always accurate, they seemed to be conscientious enough, that I didn't mind. Kakashi sounded like Kakashi, and I couldn't imagine another English voice for him - same for the other main characters. However, watching the last part of Naruto and all of Shippuden in subbed form gave me a great appreciation of the extra expressiveness that the original language conveyed. I like both, but I don't think I care to watch Shippuden with dubs. I like Kurama's Japanese voice.

I've been watching anime and reading mangus since the early scannellation days. I've always preferred the subs especially now in the age of localization. Dubs these days seem to rewrite half the dialogue to either make it PG or Americanized or because the translator thinks they're a better writer than the author. As an American I can tell you that whatever companies port these anime to English spend as little as possible on voice talent to maximize profit. Compare an anime dub to just about any American cartoon and you can see the difference in budget.

Most of these people who get sooo focused on SUB over DUB just simp for anything Japanese because it’s sooo cool or whatever. Really what happens is a lot of the writing they use in anime is over the top and not how people speak. And use words that people don’t use in English so the English voice actors have to either stick strict to the script or change it to a more natural phrasing that makes more sense. And I think when they change it it actually sounds better some times. Honestly I don’t get why people are so stupid about this whole thing. They hold these opinions but then don’t hold these same opinions towards Japanese people watching American movies in subtitles over a dub. Which is why I think the whole thing is silly. If you don’t mind your television and prefer the Japanese voice actors then watch things in subtitles. When people like myself end up pausing and going back several times to read every little line and disrupts the experience dub is a more smooth easier experience. I also feel like I’m going to read I might as well go with the manga and not watch anime at all. But I don’t want to do that.

there's one madara line in shippuden that just exemplifies my issue with naruto dub. "The Five Kage are nothing compared to the power i wield!" in the Dub he legit just sounds like he's trying super hard to sound intimidating and powerful, while in the dub, it's a rather nonchalant arrogance that the dub doesnt really achieve imo. the same can be said about itachi. in the dub he's trying REALLY hard to sound like an intelligent philosopher, while in the NATIVE LANGUAGE of the show, the aura is naturally there in the voice so there's not much modulation or extra effort needed.

I mean considering Itachi was putting on an act for Sasuke it makes perfect sense he’d be acting in a superior manner such as that and the dub portrays it perfectly.

Also people act as if dubs are the same shitty quality dubbed anime people would get from shows from the 80’s and 90’s. But it’s come a long way since then. So sub may be better but it not by that much these days. So I don’t quite think the argument really is that big of deal as people make it out to be.

Can someone that is fluent in japanese tell me how accurate crunchyroll and viz translations are? I prefer subs but one reason is because i was under the impression i was getting a raw translation and not localization, but its become clear to me thru reading mangas and then watching the animes, there are some wide ranges of differences. One that really is bugging me bad is spy family. When i read the manga and then watched anime i noticed two things that were frustrating. In the manga translation, when yor describes her parenting style, she quotes cobra kai , "strike first. Strike hard. No mercy." But sub in anime had something way different. Then they called damian scion boy in the manga but second son in the anime. I get it probably means the same thing. But wondering which is correct or where to get the most direct translations.

It's kind of a toss-up, but from my experience I would trust Crunchyroll's subs a bit more than I would trust Viz's manga translations for true accuracy. Not that either is perfect, but Viz is well known for taking liberties and changing things to make them sound more Western. I can't say this for sure, but the quote about Yor's parenting style sounds a lot like something Viz made up that fit the situation but wasn't literally what she said.

The thing is... You don't have to see or hear anything, no comparisons have to be made. There will never be a truly perfect translation between languages and cultures this different... Not without something absolutely game changing. Until that happens, the order goes like this; Raw > subs > dubs Raw will always be THE best way to experience foreign works. By learning the language and watching it without any kind of alteration. All you have is the purest form of the thing you're trying to consume. Subs are inferior to raw because it introduces an element of translation and often has a bunch of localisation too. A lot of times the subs are subject to the translators subjective interpretation of the script. Sometimes this can work out great when someone knows what they're doing. Other times however, you see things that basically change a completely normal Japanese sentence into some Hollywood movie line for no apparent reason. Subbed only remains superior to dubbed because the unaltered audio still exists behind it, there is a clear connection left to the original script that viewers can cling onto. And in time, people who watch subbed works can gain a general understanding of the language, bringing them to the upper bounds of what subbed can be before it makes more sense to watch it raw. Which also helps them spot these blatant mistakes in the subs. Dubs are unquestionably the worst way to experience foreign works. As a viewer, you lose all connection to the original script. You lose all context cues the audio may have had that could have been used to spot mistakes in translation and such. When watching dubbed works, you basically have to [hope] that what you're experiencing is a proper representation of what it was supposed to be. There seem to be two important things to take note of; 1. Culture isn't interchangeable. 2. Language isn't interchangeable. The issue should be obvious, but most people in the argument seem to completely ignore it in favour of dragging this into a subjective pissing contest... Culture doesn't translate well. In terms of storytelling, Japanese doesn't translate well to English. There are a lot of aspects to Japanese that are just completely foreign to the English language. That's why siblings addressing each other in dubbed anime basically goes like this; 1. It creates an awkward performance with people unnaturally referring to each other as [bro] and [sis] to keep in line with the intent behind the original script, which really is NOT a common way that siblings refer to each other in western cultures. 2. It creates a cringy situation in which Japanese terms such as [nii-san] and [nee-san] get used in the context of an English script. Oh god... Why?! 🤦 3. It creates a situation in which the script is changed to completely remove the Japanese aspect and have it make more sense in an English context. An example of this would be for siblings to refer to each other by their given names. If it's all about subjectivity, then the entire debate is completely pointless. Everyone is correct, nobody is wrong. Have whatever preference you want, it changes nothing and it means nothing. Move on with your lives... 😑
