Purchased a new Travel trailer, Did the inspection myself ( I have an aircraft inspection and maintenance license, and tools). Found these problems: Rear window had some type of adhesive spatters, access hatches in the underbelly Coroplast were poorly sealed and popping off, U bracket nuts on one side of the auto levelers were barely threaded on and were not tightened, hanger strap for grey water drain was loose, electrical connections in the distribution box were not tight, power wire to tongue jack was pinched between frame and hitch mount, 2 drawer slides were not screwed in at the back.

Great video on the industry quality. My wife and I took a month long trip out west pulling our '86 Airstream. At almost every camping spot we had nearby neighbors who wanted to talk to us about our Airstream and share with us their disappointing story buying a recent Airstream with endless quality issues. We had two people tell us to hang onto our Airstream because they aren't building them as durable anymore. We are happy with our trailer, but realize that we are dealing with an industry that isn't quality driven; it's profit driven. We ve learned to become handy and fix alot of our own stuff or find good local people who work on trailers who aren't associated with a brand.

What an interesting topic. In the four years I have owned my Canyon Star there have been just over $55,000 in repairs. Along the way, I have suggested something seemed off when looking at several small flaws (I suspected it had been in an accident), but when I would point these things out I was told I was overthinking things and that these small items were not related. Well, finally a service advisor at a dealership listened to me and put the same two and two together and said you got a problem and need to take this back to Newmar! As a result, I will be in Nappannee next Monday, June 26 to evaluate what to do about my cracked frame!

Bought a brand new 2015 Voltage toy hauler. I inspected the roof sealants as usual since I’ve been there done that. All looked good. A little over a year of ownership later I see de-lamination on the rear side corner near the roof. Upon closer inspection I discovered the roof membrane was cut over an inch short, the usual metal trim was installed then it, and bare wood was covered with Dicor sealant which actually looked great. Called Keystone which owns Dutchmen and was told to take it to an authorized dealer that they recommended. If the dealer determined it was a manufacturing defect, they would pay for the repair. The dealer determined it was in fact a manufacturing defect. Keystone told me, and I’ll paraphrase, “Take a hike, we aren’t covering anything sucker”.

Great video and thank you for the insight. I agree with many of the comments here that very sadly we pay our hard earned and saved money to tie the RV we want. We do our research and buy RV. It never fails that we find issues within the first month. Some of which we repair as there are loose screws here and there (although very unacceptable!) and then some things that need dealership work. Quality has definitely gone down over the past several years!!! Do your due diligence and really look at your unit and/or call for an inspection!! Thanks for a great video❤😊

Yes, we had a NRVIA inspection when we bought our present RV in 2017. 100+ page inspection report was impressive. We had made an inspection as part of our contingency to buy the RV from Camping World, Mesa which they were agreeable to. The main problems in the inspection were that the roof needed to be resealed, the batteries were no good, the tires were 6 years old and they needed to be replaced. In Camping World's favor, they did reseal the roof and replace the tires and batteries which saved us more than a couple of thousand dollars. The question was why didn't they do this before the inspection?

Thank you for this topic. We are RV curious but it's information like this that keep us from diving into the RV life. I grew up on boats and equate RV ownership to a large boat and those always needed some maintenance but no where near these quality horror stories. We plan to do a couple of rentals and see if this is for us. BTW, just finish a 6 week tour of the US, towing a motorcycle trailer with a small SUV and staying in hotels and with friends. Our thought is that an RV may make this type of travel easier, i.e. we would be self contained.

I read about, and saw evidence of all these horror stories during our rv purchase research. Almost decided against buying ANY rv. Didn’t want to buy a problem. Then came across Pleasureway. They have a 5 year warranty, but only for what they build, so not appliances or the base vehicle. Still, better than most 1 year warranties. In our 6 years, we have had repairs, including propane regulator, sofa mechanism, which we paid for. Other repairs were battery isolator, and spider panel replacement, but Pleasureway covered these costs. Our repair facility, Rick’s RV repair, said they liked Pleasureway because they were open to warranty claims and even gave repair shops a credit card to keep and use for instant approved repairs. Rick’s said sometimes it takes a long time for other brands to decide approval, ship parts, or pay for service. Thank goodness, we went for a Pleasureway. This is just our experience. Good luck in yours.

Really good video. I bought a used travel trailer…it was a disaster. I should’ve got an inspection before I bought it. Water intrusion was the major issue (and there were lots of other issues). Granted, I was a newbie and too trusting. So we bought a brand new one and still have issues…although not as bad. What is sooo frustrating is that these small issues (that can cause major damage) could nearly all be eliminated with such little effort by manufacturer with greater quality control!!!

Interesting video. Funny, I have never had an inspection of a used car, except 1 classic car that was over a thousand miles away, or a RV. I’m 61 and have owned a hundred cars ( I like cars and classic cars, plus for my family) and over a dozen RVs of every type, including several motorhomes, and have never had a professional inspection. I’m not saying it’s not a good idea because it is but in my case, I always felt that I was knowledgeable enough to do my own thorough inspections. I can honestly say that I have never had a lemon for any of the vehicles or RVs. Sounds crazy but I tend to have the absolute best luck with vehicles, I’m also very, very OCD about them so I think that helps. Thanks for sharing!👍

We purchased new in 2015, BigHorn by Heartland, I agree that all RV’s have issues and not one is perfect. But we did have some structural issues about 2019 were we noticed a crack in the corner of the slide out frame on the fiberglass, it cost us about $6,000 to have it repaired. It was found that the tack welds done by the manufacturer were bad welds so the wall had to be removed and reinforcement added and welded in, as well as the fiberglass needed to be redone. I tried to work with the manufacturer but they gave me the run around so I reported it as a safety issue to a government web site within 2 weeks I got an email and call from Heartland that they wanted to assist. They reimburse me for the cost of the repairs but it was a pain to get it all worked out. Of course no matter what kind of inspection or thorough inspection that issue would not have been found. I have had some minor issues like drawer bottoms falling through, or other maintenance things like black and gray tank valves or breaks, and bearings but these are wear and tear and I have thought myself to do the work, I just replaced the flooring on my RV, one of the hardest jobs I have had to do. Other than that one major issue it has been a great RV and because we are so familiar with it, and know the systems we will probably keep it until we no longer use it.

No inspections on the last two used motorhomes. We looked at every nook and cranny for water leaks and called it good. It is a point in time of the condition because as it heads down the road - things break! Both were fine; just little D.I.Y. stuff popped up. I think if I was going to get a new one I would do the inspection because of the poor quality. Mt brother went through three travel trailers in one year due to poor quality - the middle one was taken back by the manufacturer because there was no fix! The other two were in the shop under warranty for longer than he used them. He bailed during COVID to get his money back. He is OCD about mechanical things so RV's and him are not a good fit.

I converted a stock GM van and that is how we travel now. A license to make RV's is a license to steal. Most of the 5th wheels are also not safe at highway speeds. The tow vehicles are too small, there is no required training, they are an accident looking for a place to happen. It's all crazy!! So sad. 8( --gary

(aftermarket available too) Some companies use cheap axles! They should also have all "LED" lights, and high quality wiring. Take a good flashlight and look at everything! I told them I wouldn’t be completing the purchase without one. They reluctantly allowed it but rushed them through their inspection. It did reveal problems that the dealer addresses some of them and I worked relentlessly with Thor over the next 7 months to resolve the rest of the issues. But, now it’s absolutely perfect. Next, it needs to be kept up every year. The best part Winnebago has a 3 year warranty on everything they do and I recommend use your new RV so you can take care of it under that Manufacturer warranty. If you rarely use your RV it may take longer to find the issues.

Isn’t it a shame you had to travel back to Forest City 3 times to get it correct when it should have been that way from the factory? That is the big issue with the RV industry that we want people to be aware of before they get into the RV lifestyle.

It was actually good, because they fixed it all perfect. I don’t think a dealership repair shop could have done all that need to be done correctly. The factory service know their own units and know exact,y how to fix them. I was prepared for the factory visits. We just made a trip out of it and had other stops in the Midwest. What they did in 5 days would take several months at a dealership service.

Off topic here... You did a video where you mentioned that the photos on your walls were metal and at the time I didn't note where they came from... and no clue from which video. Thanks. Also, this video makes me what to hang onto my 2003 Sunline forever. In all these years, the only problem was the roof began to leak from being stored in full sun in a field for it's first 15 years. Our fault, not the manufacturer. Repaired now, but I am absolutely appalled at the crappy workmanship in brands (like Jayco) that had an excellent reputation for a well built product. Love going to RV shows, but scared to buy.

there are two sources of defects in RVs -- 1) the manufacturer, 2) the user (owner, operator, whatever you want to call the person who actually uses the RV). I have an '83 Avion 35' trailer that I got for a song and is in really good condition overall (some rust in outrigger areas (steel) but overall not falling apart) but there IS some evidence of water leaks (stained rivets in the ceiling, etc.). But over the 40 years of use I don't think even once anyone has gone up to clean the roof of pine needles that hold onto water after it rains or inspect (let alone replace) seals around critical areas. I've watched a number of these videos on RVs and many have said that RV manufacturing isn't what it used to be. "Hand made" with pride and precision isn't the same thing as "hand made" and you're in a hurry or cutting corners to improve your bottom line. That's the manufacturer's dilemma and how to address that I'm not sure ("vote w/ your pocketbook"?). But as an owner, regardless of the condition the vehicle may have been in new, you can extend the life immensely by spending time (and a little effort and expense) in maintaining the unit. While I'm very fond of the Avion I have now, I just wonder what it might have been like had the previous owner paid more attention to keeping it pristine while he owned it. It seems whether it's a vehicle or relationship (just to name a couple examples), over time people tend to lose interest -- and when that happens, things deteriorate. Bringing them back to their former glory typically takes (in the long run) more of everything compared to what might have been the case if a little attention, exercised often, had been done.

This is not shocking. RV's are Crap, absolutely no fit & finish on anything, manufacturers rely on large amounts of Caulking. Water damage is an absolute. RV's are not an Investment and depreciate 50% the minute you drive of the Lot. Used campers are everywhere. Junk, Junk and More Junk.

How frustrating for people paying alot of money for a RV only to find out it's a piece of junk. We were looking at buying a new RV to replace our 1988 class C. After a lot of research we decided to keep the old girl and put $$ into upgrading. We have not one leak in our RV. We also don't have any slides and don't like them. Sure having more room is great but you are inviting water into you RV. I mean the rv industry thinks the solve the problem by putting those ridiculous little awnings over the slides.
@lorrieleaver2447

Firstly I wouldn’t dream of buying any RV without a full independent inspection. New or used expensive or not something is going to be trouble. The standards of construction are not adequate for the money being asked and appear to be getting worse. Doors don’t fit and the hinges are not correctly installed. Roofs are another disaster area as the majority of people feel unsafe just looking. One of my biggest concerns is the risk of fire 🔥 due to the electricity system being overlooked and wired incorrectly or, rat infestation where they simply chew through wires and anything else. It’s a big problem and it’s your life at risk to be blunt. RVS are something that sounds like being free to explore the country but it’s definitely not worth the money that’s being asked. Until manufacturers start taking these issues seriously and making the appropriate changes to their standards you will need to have many thousands of dollars for immediate repairs and then ongoing issues. IF you can afford it given the problems heading your way than go ahead with your inspection and negotiate a price that will include everything likely to happen in year one and thereafter start saving for subsequent years of troubles. It’s time for legalisation to protect the buyers and hold manufacturers fully accountable. The money they are making out of substandard units is daylight robbery in my opinion. I’m predicting that at least half of all manufacturers will be bankrupt within the next five years unless they change their products and standards now. Brilliant video you guys!!!
