What gets under my skin is the constant smashing of the blade onto the ground. I'm fine with it in Monster Hunter because I mostly use Two Hand Swords that aren't blades, and Guts gets a pass because it's made literally a slab of IRON, but an actual BLADE? I'm slowly dying inside.

I agree completely. I hate the common trend of greatswords being slow. The trade off should be less ability to defend rather than just being unwieldy.

Bold to assume that the best weapon known to history needs a bloody tradeoff.

@@captaincrapface7337 haha ah well I think the best weapon is a spear but I am not into hema or anything but if a tradeoff had to be made that's the one I would make. Thanks for posting the video.

I have to disagree. The animations/movelist of DD2 Warrior work that way because the fantasy of a warrior is bulky, heavy hits. It's that slow because that's the fantasy. The tradeoff is that this warrior gets to kill horrible three-headed monsters, and your HEMA fighter simply tags peers in a sporting manner.

i agree and disagree. yes, the fantasy of heavy hitting shit that weights more than the user its why i played warrior on the 1st game. but, a slightly longer stick with an anvil on the end of it doesn't look or feel heavy, and makes no sense. if they branched greatswords like dark souls, having normal greatswords used with finesse and fast movesets from ultra greatswords, bigger and heavier than the user, and sometimes twice as big, hitting really hard and actually having its heavy feeling, because it is actually heavy. thats a good system to look at, with maybe a couple of small exeptions

my thinking exactly, its the same in Monster Hunter, if you want rapid attacks you take dual-wield small weapons, 2-hander weapons are for when you want to slowly swing around a ridiculously large weapon and see massive damage numbers :D i actually dislike it when 2 handed weapons are fast in games, like my favourite MMO GW2 sees warriors waving them around like they're weightless, it just doesn't feel meaty!

Considering how much "hate" fantasy greatswords get in the fantasy/hema area of youtube in general recently, I have to say that while it arguably doesn't have much to do with something like "martial arts", the ability to hit a big monster with as much force as possible is certainly useful. Such a heavy weapon would be worthless in human v human scenarios, of course, but in Dragon's Dogma, your primary target will be a big monster that's currently preoccupied by your teammates - the perfect target for ye ole barbaric overhead strike with your 150 kg great sword. Honestly the thing I am most disappointed by is that it seems like they replaced the old sword and board parry animation from the first game with a dark souls-like one where you somehow manage to move your shield behind your own body. (And that there is still no sign of Mystic Knight, of course)

All the horizontal strikes in the game have no such justification tho

Bro, in history, an ordinary one-handed sword could cut off two heads at once with a quick slash, and two-handed swords slaughtered enemies gracefully without those idiotic movements like in the movie. The idea of this video is an attempt to make the audience aware that what the mainstream teaches us is nonsense and fighting with a two-handed weapon can look much better.

4:11 btw the sword warrior is holding there is heavier than 4 kilos, but there is no point comparing fantasy game to real stuff.

The animation reminds me of greatsword in Monster hunter games. While on those games that weapon is ridicilously huge which warrant's the animation. Here it does not make sense.

Yeah so i attribute this to the popularity of Soulslike games. Every Elden Ring and Darksouls fan ive encountered seem to LOVE this slow deliberate unga bunga smash build that takes the anime style giant Guts sword and turns it into a massive club. I personally cant stand it and never play that weapon because of this slow playstyle. I want fast explosive movement, not slow sluggish swings. They claim it requires more skill to be able to time your attacks and counter moves but i just hate it and will never play classes where the combat style is like this, for the same reasons you complain about. And honestly its a mischaracterization of the archetype imo. In fantasy series like the Stormlight Archives where they have these giant superhuman sized swords, they are described as light as a feather and able to be weilded one handed as if they were an aluminum training sword. The fantasy IMO is being able to take a 6ft long mega chopper and swing it so fast and destructively that you become a human blender. A one man destruction force. Not a slow lumbering ogre. I just dont get it. I for one will be starting with the Thief class and moving to the Mystic Spearhand as soon as i possibly can unlock it. I have been dying for a class that utilizes a whirling bo staff/ naginata style combat like this, in combo with magic use for a loooooong time and this is the first game ive seen a class that has a playstlye of how i imagine i want to play.

Mistic Spearhand, is according to promotional materials, combination off fighter and wizard, but what's also stated you don't need to play either to unlock it. Recently revealed Warfarer Vocation able to wieald and sich betweens three chosen weapons of other vocations for a penalty to base stats, also looks promising.

I was just complaining about the very same thing except elden ring to a friend of mine and then find this video. No one cares about the plight of the medieval nerds :( you tell someone a poleaxe only weighs 2kg and it means nothing to them, you send them a video of swinging a big messer around one handed yet they don't seem to care and can even show them how strong actual well made plate is vs a pick and NOTHING. I am left in despair, messer in hand and bread in the other ready to make a sandwich

I disagree. The swords you show human beings using are lightweight, the game uses weapons that weigh the same as chubby teenagers. The warriors look like they rely on strategic BURSTS of strength to launch goblins and deflect attacks and the inertia of moving a heavy object to swing the weapon , focusing the damage at the point of impact which should translate to much more damage than swinging a lightweight sword that takes barely any effort yo swing. You're putting too much realism into it and the reality is the type of visual damage that gamers want to see is not going to come from comparitively flimsy weapons that only look great but almosy weigh the same as a gladius. I do think the weapon damage needs to consistently fit the visual strength being applied. Especially at points where they BURST with energy to perform powerful feats.
@captaincrapface7337

There are three issues present. For starters such thing as burst of strength, is an idea contrary to how mucscules operate. It takes significant time and effort to tire human muscules, especially for a person that excersizes regularly. Being able to preform a fit of streangth, means everything up to that point will be possible and easy for the preformer, and it'll take long period of physical activity, not a singular funny swing tire a warrior. Secondly the notion that Greatsword, the weapon famous for helping various assortments of heads and limbs establishing autonomy from torso's they used to be connected to, is somehow not going to do big damage against big fleshy target is a massive logical fallacy. Cutting, is not as dependant on mass behind the blade as sheer blunt force trauma, and deminishing returns come earlier than you'd assume. I of course don't say devs should hold onto realism in game with monsters and magic. I just foster an opinion, that treating a sword as a club, is not a good direction to go in.

Read what you typed out loud to yourself while watching all the impossible jumping, climbing, strength and and stamina and realize how silly you sound. It does not take an enormous leap in the logic established in the game world that bursts of strength that will allow you to jump and grab and climb walls while traversing the body of a moving monster for 20 seconds while continuing to deal damage with their weapon can give you the power it takes to swing a moped at a minotaur to parry its attack. You are hyper focused on realism in a domain where realism is suspended for the sake of Anime and Jesus. This video was a miss. I dig your energy and love for historical warfare, but its misdirected where a video game, especially a Japanese video game is concerned, its like a martial arts historian spitting on Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee movies because most of the moves would be ineffective at best. Dragons Dogma's weapons are crazy heavy and the struggle to crush and cut in the same movement is part of the charm (inspired by Gatsu/guts from Berserk as most things in grimdark Japanese games these days) it just looks cool. Every single scene you showed of a human accurately swinging their fancy lightweight swords looked so impotent in comparison to the point of the games. greatswords which again are more oonga boonga than finesse slicing.

@@ombra711 among all the impossible jumping, climbing, strength and stamina, it is the easyiest - holding his fucking weapon above the ground, that our hero struggles th most with. It doesn't take an enormous leap in logic to figure out that swinging a sword with a human sized goblin on a buisness end is harder than swinging it withaout the aforementioned goblin. I'm not hyper focused on realism, I'm dissapointed that devs went forward with the idea of making the greatsword combat in the PvE game unnecesairyly slow, clunky and animated the player character to actively fight against natural way a weapon of any kind is effectively handled. If I'm to be playing a mage, I want them to know magic, and noone's bothered about that. But if I ask a warrior character, that supposedly trained mele combat for years, to know absolute fucking basics of mele combat, somehow I'm "hyper focused on realism". It doesn't even take brainpower to learn how a weapon wants to be handled. Momentum of the weapon will lead you if you just let it, and first thing you lern, is to guide that momentum, and not halt it after every swing just to start accelerating the weapon in literally opposite direction. The player character is perpetually stuck in animation set of someone that's never had a weapon, let alone a greatsword in hands. The 6 int Barbarian trope is overrated and overdone on top of being a downgrade from reality. This moveset is a downgrade from reality, and that's what I'm mad about. Not that its differet from realism, but that its a downgrade from realism. If you could put a demigod or an average caveman, as a player characer in a power fantasy, which one would you choose?
