6:58 Nah, Schaffrillas has said himself that his Megamind video was simply a response to the already building cult following and understanding that Megamind was gaining at the time the video released and serves more so as a culmination of those thoughts and feelings on the movie. He didn't singlehandedly change discussions around Megamind, he just saw plenty of other moviegoers online expressing their appreciation for an underrated DreamWorks movie so he thought he'd throw his hat into the ring too.

I have a friend who years ago showed me a video of him spawning tons of Minecraft wardens and having them kill a wither. I told him that it looks super cool and he should post it to YT, the resulting video was "Warden Death Ray" and it very quickly gained an excess of a million views. He's tried capitalizing on it since, I've helped him out a bit, but he always that video looming over him the whole time, being unable to get even 1 percent of the success it did, and yet he's actually putting effort into his other stuff. Only a few months ago did I finally escape the shadow of the video that got me popular, my Disguises video (one that I am proud of). It still has the most views, but my engineer video is now gaining more than it does on a daily basis, and another recent one of mine seems to have broken it again. It feels good knowing that I'm not a one-hit wonder now. That's the scary thing of having a video that blows up, you then have to somehow try top it's success, and that's difficult if you didn't do it on purpose.

100% agree. And it's not just videos, but any creative work, such as mods for PC games. I make character mods for Guitar Hero World Tour Definitive Edition. And some of my most popular characters are just meme characters, such as the Geometry Dash cube and a literal Table. Characters that I speedran to make have 688 and 713 downloads respectively. While characters that I have modeled myself from scratch that took several months to make, such as my fursona and Herbie the love bug only have 499 downloads *combined.* Less than either of these meme characters. I actually hate the fact that I made a character mod for a game that is a literal table which I speedran to make has more downloads than characters that I modeled myself for months combined. I hate it.

This is an interesting vid. I hate Joe fans who only talk about Dog of Wisdom. These are people who don't even know what Great The Show is. It's the Jack Stauber - Buttercup effect. My favorite instance of this is OneyPlays, where everything else in the top is these multi-hour evergreen compilations, but the top vid is Chris screaming over the video of a dentist malfunctioning. My other favorite instance of this is Xarlable's alt channel having the "apple bottom jeans, boots with the jeans" vid with over 2 million views. Xarlable's been a mainstay of YTPMVs for over a decade.

The fact it's short is also so important because the reason so many videos get that popular is from people sending it to their friends.

Then i saw some anime girl killing shitpost that was reposted everywhere, later realizing it's from his channel of which gain millions of views. Later the channel would still upload some Halo animations alongside some anime girl massacres, the former would get decent 100k-200k views while the later would easily get 500k to millions of views. I mean he's definitely having fun making more of those shitpost, even made a funny apology video in the form of a Halo Reach machinima. He's probably fine with it but i can kinda see his love for Halo still bleeds into anime girl killings when some of them just loops back to Halo lol.

The reality is that you cannot choose how you are remembered. You cannot be perceived the way you perceive yourself, because perception is one of those concepts that is unique to every single person including yourself. You have two choices when you get a hit. Either keep rolling with it, or don't. Whichever choice makes you the happiest is the choice you should make. I recently stopped chasing the algorithm because it doesn't make me happy and doing my own thing makes me happier. While it would be nice to just churn out whatever makes people subscribe to my channel more and be happy with that, that goes against my nature and I need to let go of the vain desire for more attention. In a world where people are more worried about metrics rather than what gives them life, it's very refreshing to go the route of self actualization. I've been obsessed with numbers, trends for so long, I forgot to ask myself why I even like them in the first place. I'm fascinated by meta's, but I don't enjoy participating in them. And sometimes, meta's are so archaic and without reason that people go mad trying to understand them when sometimes they're not intended to be understood in the first place. Content creators burn out trying to appease lifeless sorting algorithms that don't understand the nuance of the human experience. There's a reality out there to live, and at any moment it could be gone tomorrow. Quite a waste going through the anxiety of being known when chances are you won't even be known for the reasons you wanted in the first place.

I watched your first viral video, didn't subscribe, but then the algorithm showed me this one and I watched it, realized I forgot to subscribe, and did The algorithm is a fickle thing, just "Oh he made a video about this, and a lot of people watched it, if he makes another video about the same topic, people are more likely to watch it than if it's a video about some other unrelated topic," which leads to people feeling trapped by the first thing that got successful. It's just how it works, you're competing with others for attention in a simple numbers game. If you want togo beyond that, you have to be so unique that people want to go out of their way to search your name. In the search feature that barely works That's just how this platform is.
