Civilian (albeit early and very basic) internal combustion engines existed at the time. It's a slight exaggeration, but it's not complete outside of reality that the british government would have been very interested in buying up the work of Daimler, Benz, Diesel, etc. These early internal combustion engine pioneers have probably been taken under pay by the british government and are churning out more and yet more advanced engines to power first the armoured lorries and then what the british call armoured track layers (we know them as early tanks).
