Just a quick note, because this is apparently a thing we have to do: We aren't saying that all women would or should be into cars if only we told them about them. We're just saying, give women the same opportunities to get into cars as guys. Don't assume they won't care, and don't assume they're just into it for attention. Let's just try to be more inclusive.

Women have the same opportunities to become car enthusiasts. They CHOOSE not to get involved. Is it societal? Perhaps. Is it biological? Possibly. More importantly there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a hobby/sport that’s male dominated. Men and women actually have different preferences. This whole push for gender diversity needs to stop. Perpetuating a non-issue may be good for views but it accomplishes nothing. If you really want to help the community we should get more people involved regardless of gender.

I was constantly put down for loving cars as a female. I come from a very uptight, conservative family that always put me down showing any interest. I wanted to go into Automotive Technology and Autobody Repair classes at school and no matter what I wanted it, no matter how much I would beg, my family would not sign off and let me. Cars were for boys, it was too "manly" for me, fixing up a car and getting dirty wasn't feminine. I'm only 17 but I've went against them and bought a 1998 Camaro and a 1994 Pontiac Firebird as project cars, I love them. I don't know everything about cars yet, but I'm getting there. Edit: I didn't expect this to get so much attention! Here's an update for anyone curious: I originally had my boyfriend who was going to help teach me about cars after I told him I've always wanted to learn. So when I bought the firebird and Camaro, I put them on his grandparent's property (my parents wouldn't let me have them since they were against me being into cars). He ended up cheating on me multiple times, so this July I finally broke up with him. Now my parents are making me get rid of my cars because I have no where to put them :( after driving 14 hours and spending tons of money on a 5.7l LS engine and other parts. Im heartbroken, it's one of the hardest things I've had to do

Heyo, a 2.6 er here. I started getting into cars because I was really into aircraft as a kid. My mother had learned knowing how to fix carb engines, telling me much as she could with my grandfather. My grand mother had built her own Mustang in the 80s because "she wanted it". Now it may seem weird, but at the time of Highschool I wanted to learn a bit more on how engines worked if I was going to fly. I joined the engineering club which, did not give me a warm welcome. My potential with engines was always stunted by a teacher who preferred to see women as "secretaries". Something he openly said during club hours to me and the only other female. Figures a boomer would say it (no offense) One day a club mate had brought over a go kart being made into solar. (I couldnt believe it either...) They could not figure out how to plug in the battery, but I remembered being taught how to ground the battery and connect stuff properly by my mother. I showed them how and wouldn't you know it started up, instead of saying thanks. I was told that I couldn't work on projects of other students. After several years of crap of being labeled as "dumb" or "slow" by my peers. I hermited into a depressive state after graduating highschool. For three years I kept telling myself I would go to flight school, but wasnt confident in my abilities to fly or do anything. As I believed the crap that I was "dumb" or "slow" by people I saw as peers or smarter then myself. I legit started to move away from the idea of becoming a pilot, only to go back to it because it was the only thing in the world that interested me. Other then cars... Then, I had to get my first car for the first time at 20. Yeah, 20, I had secluded myself for three years and never bothered to get a license. I had became a burden on others and My mother wanted me to shape up. She told me to find a car that I wanted for a $1000 dollars, she would buy it and I would be able to be treated as an adult. I told her I would find a car, but being the person I am, I couldnt just buy any car. I had to have a V8, because I loved the sound, I loved the speed and it was something I remember my grandmother always fondly speaking about when she built her 1969 Ford Mustang back in the 80s. My mother also had a Explorer with a v8, that I had always fixed for her. So that was further pushing the idea of a V8 I started doing my research on cars, what car brands, what had a V8. I researched for half a year, learning things from people like ChrisFix, Drew Peacock, Etc. I started being absorbed into this culture de la car. I couldn't get out of it, it reached its peak when I bought my car in February a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis. The interior felt very muscle car esque, while it had a v8 and four doors for insurance. They were known as reliable machines, I was sold. I bought the "Metal Machine" in Feb 2019. Since then, my life had improved, Ive become more obsessed with cars then ever. Especially when I learned you could make different builds. I turn 21 next month and I have been taking Flight Lessons. My car is my bridge to sanity and stability in my life, a symbol of freedom. I couldn't trade it for anything. Oh and, I am building a drift car starting November. Thanks for listening to my story I guess, I hope this inspires others to not be limited and that cars can be fantastic machines.

Yeah, great video, great start to talking about this issue. I don't agree with all of it - for example being a car person doesn't mean the same thing as wanting to work on cars, necessarily. I don't find many women who are that interested in cars in the same way that many men are, even when you take out the overly mechanical aspect of it. I want more girls in the car community because my own friends are close to 50/50, but I think some things you just have to call it what it is - for some biological reason men are more likely to be into cars

They're literally just trolls trying to circle jerk each other. It's no different for guys when they first start learning, it's not like they learn you're a guy and you get preferential treatment in places like that no if anything men get it worse with a lot harsher shit talking. It's a part of being on the internet there will always be people to shit on you, the only thing separating someone in the community and a noobie is knowledge and knowing how to ignore the shit talkers This is no different from gaming, programming, and computer enthusiast. You see the same exact shit every where, for some reason people only mainly like to attract attention to the female side of it.

I met my girl at a meet. She is beautiful, smart, and loves cars. Her favorite is an 07 sti. She loves bikes too. I was on my R1 the night we met. It was crazy luck. I feel for the guys looking for car girls, but they are out there. My advice, find a non-car girl who isn't afraid to get dirty (maybe she likes sports, or is really active) and show her the car world SLOWLY. Do exactly what you did when you learned to love them. Go to car meets, make sure they are fun and incorporate other things, like a movie or stargazing or something she likes into your night out. And dont be a tool drifting every corner and talking NONSTOP about cars all night on the first date either. Express to her you have an interest but be open to other conversations. It's a slow process, and over time, who knows? It may not be as easy as finding a car girl, but long term it can be just as good. I know I was not always a car guy... I used to not care at all. But at 14 I saw my first fast and furious movie with friends... and I have never left the parking lot that fast :) my love started that night. Foster interest, give lots of positive feedback... and if a girl likes making you happy, she will associated car stuff with you smiling, and that can be contagious. Dont push to hard to fast, go slow. My advice.

Assuming the same racing skillset, women might actually have an advantage when racing just because they're smaller and lighter.
@sandrock75317 жыл бұрын
I think it's because of the risk: i torture my standard fwd 1994 Renault R5 to cut-out rpm and i use hand brake in turns like a maniac and my sister doesn't want to come anywhere near close to that car, because she does not feel safe in it, not even when driving slow. It was proven that guys enjoy adrenaline from risk a lot more than girls. This might be another explanation.

First of all I love your videos! Second of all I’m obviously a girl and I LOVE cars. I’ve always liked cars and I used to go to watch races with my mom when I was a kid. When I got my license cars became everything to me. Nothing and no one could stop me from driving.. fast :P (responsibly of course 😉) I’ve become more and more intersected in cars and how they work, fixing them etc. and I love learning about them. The problem for me is the fact that I’m alone with this passion. None of my friends or family for that matter really cares about cars, even the guys haha. So all I can do I just watch KZbin videos, save up money and just try. I do love just jumping in and taking something apart though. Best way to learn in my opinion. But having someone by your side to teach or guide you would be nice. Gas is in my blood, cars are in my heart and driving is the air I breathe. I will say though that I’ve recently found a group on Facebook exclusively for girls who loves cars and we’re about 300 members. (Most work on cars with their boyfriends) but it gave me a little glimmer of hope that I am not completely alone. 🙃 Great video. And guys if a girl is interested in cars don’t mock her for asking questions. There’s no stupid questions. It just shows that she’s actually interested in learning. And if you’re interested in seeing my car look it up on insta: 4_wheeled_passion

The first girl you interviewed (non enthusiast) hit the nail on the head. From a very early age, boys generally are pushed towards toy cars and GI Joes. Girls generally play with barbi's, have make believe fashion shows and so on. Societal norms and traditions heavily manipulate the interests of all young people whether they're aware of it or not, hence the huge gap in the male to female ratio of car enthusiasts

I agree that there are cases of things pushed on kids, but I also am aware that boys just prefer cars and girls prefer dolls. @OllamhDrab5 жыл бұрын
Well, a helpful hint is that we actually care less about bragging rights and dyno numbers than sort of the whole package when it comes to car builds. I'd seriously be like, "Why did you want to drag race a Supra? :) " (It is probably less common for gals to be into big dyno numbers and smoky burnouts, as fun as that can be to watch. Personally, I like grip, balance, and throttle response. :) Anyway, whatever you're driving, try, ah, making friends and being an interesting human being. :) Interesting cars are conversation pieces for any car people. Gals are less likely to see them as a very meaningful thing when it's guys doing dominance displays at *each other,* ...and I'd say don't try making your car about how 'big a man' you think you're supposed to be, ...express yourself and ...if you do that well, someone actually interested in *you* might spot that out. (Of course all bets are off at NHRA events that way. You never know who's running what. :))

I know of a couple of girls, who are really into cars. But, at least in my surrounding, 97% of women have either 0 interest in cars, other than being a mode of transportation, or they only look at how expensive the car is, so they can judge how much money you have and what you can do for them, though I come from Eastern Europe, where we are raised in a different way. I am obsessed with cars and have been since I can remember. I am the only one in my family, my dad's an engineer and he is intrested in the engineering part of things, my mom and everybody else has 0 interest, beside cars being a mode of transportation. I've gone out with a couple of girls, who couldn't care less about cars. Now I've been with my girlfriend for almost a year and I think I am starting to rub off on her. At the beginning she could not be bothered, about cars. Now she comes with me to meets and shows, she looks at the on the street, she even sends me pictures of cool cars she saw. I know, that's because I'm interested in them, but I'd like to imagine that she has picked up at least a little bit.

DBGMLV Think it's one of the best things when you date someone and even though they don't share all of your interests, they give it a chance to understand why you like something. We exist but damn it is massively uncomfortable at car events. On one end of the spectrum you get the guys that want to crawl all over you instead of talk about cars, and on the other end the guys that are threatened that you exist in their hobby and want it to stay a "boys club" (had a crew of guys yell and curse at me while leaving an event). What few female car friends I have, we mostly talk among ourselves. I wonder if it's different by area though. I live out in the sticks and almost no one here is into cars, so they tend to be friendly toward the idea of a girl being into cars because they respect it's something outside their own knowledge. I'm sure more populated car scenes are probably rougher to get into as a girl. That being said, I've met more decent supportive people than trolls. When I start talking about cars, some of my girl friends that always seemed like they aren't into cars get pretty jazzed, they've just never been asked or given the knowledge to be into it. My honda CRV loving best friend is now drooling over a GTR.
@ValkyrieLightwing7 жыл бұрын
That's honestly what it comes down to. The top comment said the same thing and there's no possible way to really argue against it. At the end of the day, it should never really be more about the person driving the car, than the car itself, because cars are our passion, not the people.

It's a lot about areas I'd say. Out in the country I see a lot more women wrenching and doing things than in the city. You're on your own in the country so it's good to know at least the basics. Car meets and things out at the drag strip or country are generally pretty chill and about the vehicles. In the city it seems to be once women show up every dude is trying to hit on them. Or if a woman asks them about their car they think she's into him because she spoke to him. Then again, you get those same guys in any social arena and they'll be doing the same thing. You really can't change those guys, but as other men we can discourage that. There's also the women that come to car meets wearing hardly anything looking for attention. That doesn't help either. I'm also saying this as a much wiser and older guy. I was young guy once checking out the girls at car meets. Now it's just about the cars, staying focused and out of the wall :)
@yellowlt1ta7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the people too. I'll tell you right now that I won't talk to anyone at a car meet unless their is something worth talking about on their car, guy or girl. But if it happens to be a girl i won't talk to her about her car because i already know they will only assume that im just trying to get with them because thats what they have already been exposed to in the car community.
@wandering_moto7 жыл бұрын
From what I’ve seen, the only thing stopping more women from coming into the car hobby is other women. And the women in the community that I have met all have one thing in common. They stopped caring so much about what all the other girls think.

See that’s the thing. It’s hard to be a car girl when men usually aren’t that inclusive...I speak from experience. Every time I misspeak they kinda just tell me to go do something else or tell me that I just don’t get it. I wish I had someone who would help me out bc yes I’n interested and no I’m not a car pro
@Crushonius6 жыл бұрын
mimi how about you learn a few things from youtube or books and show the guys you know some stuff i bet then they will include you just fine . or go to them and tell them plain simple hey i know nothing about cars but i wanna learn . men are inclusive but you have to earn the respect and that goes only two ways either eat humble pie and admit you know nothing and want to learn or put in some hours and learn some stuff so you can join in on the conversation . just saying men are not inclusive and not trying to do something about it just shows why they dont want you around them and is more a reflection about you and not about them

That's because we're steered towards those things from a young age. Is there a biological difference? Probably a little bit, but a huge amount of it is being encouraged towards being interested in certain things. How many people tried to get you to play with dolls or put on makeup as a little kid? Wasn't a whole lot for me.
@maybelive7655 жыл бұрын
Thats very true, but there are introverted girls at a 30-40% average, which I could categorize animal girls, movie/comic book girls, gamer girls and straight up sluts in that 30/40%, I think that logically, the girls that would be most interested in car mechanics are the ones which play video games and enjoy animal caring, that would probably the closest to building a project car. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I love women that build cars. Women tend to have a really good eye for detail. Finding women that are into cars, like genuinely into cars is difficult. Some of the women I come across that claim to like cars are no different than some of the guys out there doing it for scene points though. Respect to to real enthusiast man or female.

N one of them every now and then picks up the rattle gun to take off wheels for kicks and giggles. There's one girl however who drops by our class every other day and actually does do work when there is some.

Female carpenter here. This is a great vid! I fully agree when the helmet (or hard hat) is on its all the same and for me I just want it to feel that way. Encourage me bc it is harder when I have to walk around with everyone calling me sweetie wondering why I’m there. But beyond that IGNORE my gender bc it is NOT RELEVANT. I want to learn about and talk about stuff just like anyone else. But if I get anxious or freeze up you know it’s the years of conditioning from media and society telling me I can’t do this and don’t belong here. I walk around never knowing if it’ll be five seconds five minutes or five days before someone questions, doubts, or harassed me for being a woman at work. That’s why many women don’t want to be there. And that’s on guys to change. Hold each other accountable and like you said be a mentor. 🤙🏻

you want to do a man's Job you should be able take the same amount of ball busting and abuse as a man does... IMO women expect preferential treatment and are used to being treated like princesses from an early age, this works against them when they try to do male dominated activities/work.... men are treated harsher from an early age even at school we get toughened up by other schoolmates and when I started my career as a mechanic I got the new guy treatment but it did not bother me because it toughens you up and if I make a mistake at work I still get taunted about it the but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

What’s wrong with a hobby that is male dominant? Not everything has to have gender diversity. Women aren’t intentionally excluded they choose not to attend. It’s not always some underlying sexist motive that seems to be forced down our throats by the media these days.

The beauty of motorsports is it doesn’t matter who you are you can be good, in a sport like football a woman can never compete with men just because how physical it is and the simple fact that women aren’t genetically built for that, but race cars can be driven by anyone man woman doesn’t matter
@KrautSpaceMagic7 жыл бұрын
just playing the devils advocate here, and dont get me wrong i absolutely support and encourage more women in the car scene but i think a big problem lies in how us as guys treat each other, as in the kind of trailer talk we have between each other is very crude, and its a weird thing to act the same around girls because its considered rude. you know they may be pissed at us either because we treat them like a woman, or because we treat them like a man. what some call toxic masculinity us guys alone just call bullshitting or being friends, but to do the same to a lady you never know how they may react because i have met plenty of girls in the car scene who have a chip on their shoulder like they have something to prove. if they show up to the local car meet then i assume them just as knowledgeable and skilled as the next guy, so i treat them just as i would the next guy and then they act offended because i treat them like a guy, but to them it comes across as me being an ass when i really dont mean to be, its just how us guys treat each other
