Incluso en la escuela una maestra y los prefectos me dijeron que debía recoger mi cabello porque se veía "desaliñado y sucio" (mi cabello no es muy común en donde vivo). It’s so funny to me that in the 80s and 90s, men found big, curly hair super sexy… but now it’s not “trendy” so it’s a turn off somehow 🙄🤷‍♀️😂 I have naturally curly hair but it’s been straightened - heat tools and/or chemical straightening - since I was about 14 (I’m 31). I still straighten it purely because it’s easier to manage HOWEVER, over lockdown I did my best to bring out what’s left of the curl pattern. The response was polar opposites lol. Women LOVED it and wanted me to keep it. All the men in my life (and judging by social media reaction too) hated it 🙄😂🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s just more proof that what we find sexy and attractive is absolutely decided by trends: we’re told what to like 🤦🏼‍♀️

I agree we should bring it back, and I really like that look on some of those women, such as Nicole Kidman. But I think the way it should be done is for those who influence and shape the way we see beauty as a culture to feature a variety of different natural hair types. It's fun to do a drastically different kind of look with your hair if you want to. It's different when it feels like you have to in order to be accepted. Also, it's very damaging to your hair to go through perming or straightening. To get it done right without destroying your hair is very expensive. For example, in the 1990s, there was a kind of perm called a spiral perm. Even then, it cost easily $500 if you had a decently long, thick head of hair. So, it becomes a class issue as well. The amount of time those with the unfavored hair types have to spend to get themselves looking like whatever is the accepted way to look at that moment is itself a problem. The chemicals needed and damage to the environment are a problem as well.

Perms were really popular, a lot of them didn't have natural curls. I have noticed perms coming back, I think they have improved over time. I feel like almost every woman in her fifties has a perm horror story from the eighties. They used to look so bad for the first few weeks, until they relaxed a little, and then by the time you knew how to manage your new curls, they would start to grow out. I bleached my hair for like fifteen years, and recently grew out my natural color. I discovered I have really wavy hair when I'm not processing it to death, but I can't figure out how to manage it and make it look good so I always end up flatironing it

If I may. I would try a new hairstyle on more than one week end. When you know you won't have to leave the house and/or meet anyone. Depending on your texture, curls will have a life on their own. Mine are always in prison, on braids. They are allowed to be free three days before a shampoo week end.'Cause the braids give them a pattern that is more manageable. And I know I will have days ahead to detangle and taking care of whatever needs to be taking care of.

Ironically, combing it out dry will only make it frizzier and more knotted. You gotta comb it wet and put in lots of product then leave it alone. It's so awful that ppl say this stuff, they used to say it to me as well and as a result I would always have frizzy hair and be so frustrated and annoyed bc my hair was just untamable. Turns out, it is very different to straight hair and you gotta stop listening to ppl and do your research instead bc quite frankly, most straight haired ppl don't know what they're talking about.

But in my generation you don’t really see ever or if you do it’s not natural curls it’s usually stylist taking a curling iron to the actresses hair to try to imitate the natural curly hair look.

I bring it back 24/7 because I don't really look good with straight hair. Big hair is like my freckles, any tricks or tips to cover it up look way worse than just living with it. For every insult I got in grade school through high school ( poodle head, did you stick your finger in a light socket and much worse....) I now hear multiple compliments on " how gorgeous is your hair" or " You rock your curls" and sadly " I love your hair, I wish I could wear mine like that ". I encourage these last people to embrace the natural hair, love it and condition it. There are so many resources now on how to have your best textured curly hair. Ladies , gentlemen, They and Them, the moral of this story is embrace yourself. Do you. Stay hydrated and don't forget your sunscreen.

not really in Hollywood/pop culture though. everything and everyone on film/the cover of a magazine is smoothed to have no pores and their hair is either straight or they straighten it just to then go behind and use a curling iron to create beach waves or fake coils. natural curls are not “in” unfortunately. but idgaf, I got my “frizzy bushy big” hair out everyday and I like it : )

As someone who grew up in the 80s and has naturally curly-wavy hair, there are many reasons why it was popular then. Super straight hair was big in the 70s, and hair like fashion trends changes about every 7-10 years (faster now). Also, bc it was so popular at that time, alot of people who had curly hair had it bc of a perm, though not the actors portrayed here. Finally, particularly in the 90s, the natural hair and minimal makeup was in. Kindof like the (imo) WAY overdone makeup with 18 shades of contour are popular now. I do think embracing your natural hair has started to come back though.

Nowadays the trend is a middle part with little volume, especially in the roots area, even for those with a little more curl in their hair.

I thought it was back! My boys rock their curls that other boys pay for. I tell them how lucky they are that it’s in style.

Thank you! someone is finally bringing this up about 80s and 90s hair! it's gorgeous! I used to have hair like this as a kid, but my dad ruined it when he used to give me face-lifting ponytails when I went to school. I would do anything to bring my natural curls back! the only that works for me is using leave in conditioner and braiding my hair in two dutch braids to get SOME resemblance of this iconic hairstyle 😍

I agree! I destroyed mine by flat ironing/dying for so many years. I used to HATE my natural curls.

It takes me way too long to straighten my hair so I let it dry naturally, the waviness makes me happy 😊

Like I was going to say anything but… when Mariah Carey is the most “diverse” celebrity presented…you know who the video was about and for. Not that that’s an issue😅 I think it’s important for people online to realize when something doesn’t include them and to be ok with that.

@@tyturner7110 The point of my post wasn't about it being for certain groups of people. It was ww thinking and complaining about "curly" hair when in reality it is waves and they permed it to look that way. It's the same issue with WW in the natural hair movement. They demonised BW for the longest time then when we making our voices heard and looking like goddesses, they bring their jealous asses and take it over as if it was about them all along. They have waves but wanna call any bend to their hair curly because its a trend right now, even though as BW its our everyday lives.

@@kawaiipandas4131 Most of those WW depicted didn't have permed hair though. They had real curls, not just waves and it IS their everyday lives. It's not just a trend for quite a few WW. After perms went out of style, WW were culturally pressured to keep their straightened with no frizz for years or else they were considered not put together enough or thought to be unprofessional. Even WW with just wavy or frizzy hair were under this expectation. BW aren't the only ones who were shamed about their own natural hair. WW are allowed to make their voices heard about this. It ain't always about YOU and the crap YOU put up with. There's room enough for everyone to complain about bs societal expectations.

I’m happy that at least she spoke about it. Nowadays celebrities with curly hair who we look up to, ends up straightening their hair like it is the most obvious thing to do. if you have curly hair and wanna look pretty or put together then straighten it, simple. That’s the message it gives us. That’s one of the reasons why it’s hard for us to accept our natural hair. Lack of role models.

As someone who lived in the 80’s, I can tell you perms and body waves were the rage. My guess is that these actors did not have natural curly hair, but had perms.

It's back in a big way. Not dry and frizzy of those days, but shiney, and defined, all the way to wavy. The natural look is in.
