Always went to Public Schools. GPA 2.1. Additional 4 years at Public In-State College with 2.1 GPA. Currently age 47 with a net worth $4.8 million all from working for big corporate while saving and investing.

Born into lower middle class family, my dad was sole wage earner and mom disabled. I supported myself from the age of 16 and I worked and put myself through school without any help from grants, loans, scholarships or parents. I've been retired for 13 years, age 75 and $2.1M net worth. I can be done if you work hard.

Definitely agree with the idea of a business degree and the flexibility it can provide. But, it is important to acknowledge that getting into business school can be challenging depending on where you're trying to go. Then, sticking with an accounting major (using the example given) tends to be one of the more difficult challenges for many business students. From what I gathered during my time in college, accounting courses are to (hopeful) business majors what chemistry courses are to (hopeful) science/pre-med majors (I went to business school and didn't have to take chemistry myself). By the end of freshman year, for some by sophomore year, your skills and limitations will be made apparent; and for many, this will completely change their career trajectory before they've even begun the coursework related to the major they ultimately land on.

Public schools and an IN state university. Parents paid about half of undergraduate. Some work and some loans of less than $5K, but this was back in the early 1980s. Worked almost exclusively for the federal government and just DCA to get to a net worth of $4.4 million ($3.4M in 401K/$1M house) at age 64.

Most people get some combination of Family Support, loans, grants, and working. For me, it was probably 40% scholarship/grants, then 50% loans (which my parents paid off at the end), and 10% of me working (primarily for room/board). I also did community college during high school and summer school during college, which my parents paid for. Ended up with degrees in Computer Science and English, and I became a Technical Writer in Big Tech (Microsoft and Facebook/Meta.) Been working in that field for 25 years, now.

These types of analysis always leave out race, gender, etc....if we factor those in, you will see the "we are all the same" and "we all have the same chance" is not true. This is not to say that people should not have a sense of accountability, but the idea that this is just a numbers situation is incorrect.
