How times have changed for me. In 2020 for my 60th birthday I had planned a vacation to Bali and Australia. A lot of it was going on my CC to be paid off by overtime at a later date. Then, we all know what happened and it was cancelled. Fast forward to now. I have booked a cross Canada train trip and luxury hotel stays next year for my 65th. I have not travelled anywhere since I was in my 30's so basically it will be the trip of a lifetime. I have a fully funded sinking fund for a business class flight to the east coast, hotels, train tickets and extra. I must mention that I have no debt, a good emergency fund and retirement investments.

I’m a flighty attendant so pretty much a professional traveler and I’m 💯 with George! I always take the laundry bag and use it to collect my dirty clothes. I NEVER mix my clean clothes with my dirty clothes while traveling and I also can’t stand my shoes to not be bagged (or I use shower caps on the bottom of them)!

1) Don't rent a hotel for friends unless they pay you up front. I've been burned too many times. 2) Be aware of resort fees, parking fees, wifi fees, etc. when selecting a hotel. Surprising, I've found luxury hotels tend to nickel and dime you more. 3) Bring refillable water bottles. Spending $5 for a bottle of water adds up. 4) Getting a room with a kitchen, or staying at a hotel with complimentary breakfast can be a huge savings. 5) Most importantly, budget for extra spending so you can relax! I normally have a problem spending $15 on a cocktail, but it's not the end of the world. Just go for it 1 week out of the year.

I traveled for years for work. Stayed in Hilton branded hotels (work payed). The more expensive the hotel, the less you get without paying. The Garden Inn gets you coffee in the lobby and free breakfast. The Hilton branded property you pay for everything.

I've kept each vacation expenses in a spreadsheet for our family of four. With our net worth increases comes an increase with each vacation. Back then it was driving to National Parks and camping in a tent and cooking our meals and sandwiches. Now we are flying more and teens who eat more and desire more experiences which may cost more. But I guess the memories and experiences are priceless for us. I was raised poor and vacations was not in the vocabulary.

I haven't taken a vacation in a bit because of debt payoff. I started planning my next vacation and realized how much prices have gone up on things. My last few vacations have been road trips which end up cheaper. So adding a flight and rental car has definitely put this vacation as the most expensive vacation I've planned and that's with 9 days at a resort paid for by my boss for my 10 year anniversary at work. Doing a full two weeks, so the remainder is hotel stays, plus rental car, flight, activities, and food.

Experiences over stuff: Just paid cash for a 17 day vacation in a Europe for my family of three. Amsterdam, Paris, London and Belgium. Delta paid for my tickets (company travel points). Everything else was cash saved and much bargain hunting. Didn’t have to scrimp on meals or destination sights. Came back $3k under budget with that cash still in the savings account. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. Daughter is 16 and we don’t have that much easy time with her before we’re broke paying for college 😅 Don’t EVER rent a car in Europe (we didn’t). Public transportation is easy and cheap. Parking will kill you (one hotel was $40/night).

Then we’ve wasted money and it makes me so mad. Food is a big experience in traveling and experiencing cultures. I want it to count and I’m done wasting money on terrible restaurants.
