Where Do All The Stolen Cars Go?

OVERDRIVE

Күн бұрын

It's 2am and you hear SMASH, then the start-up of a familiar engine. Someone’s stolen your car.
Everyone knows the police are usually too busy to help you with stolen cars, so it's up to you to find it. But more often than not, that’s it - you have no hope in finding it, your car is gone.
But where does it actually go? I had the same question, where DO all the stolen cars go? Let me explain.
But first, let's address the fact that the chances of actually having your car stolen today are pretty low. There are about 287 million cars on the road in the US, and only 810,440 cases of vehicle theft in the US in 2020, and 89,400 cases in the UK. That’s about 246 thefts per 100,000 people in the US and 132 per 100,000 in the UK.
So the odds of your car being stolen today are pretty low, but never zero.
⭕ Why New Cars Keep Failing this Crash Test
• Why New Cars Keep FAIL...
⭕ How Hot Hatches Got SO FAST
• Why Hot-Hatches are No...
A chop shop is an illegal garage that profits off selling or repurposing the parts off stolen vehicles. Often run out of a legitimate storefront, an expert chop shop can strip an entire car down to its frame in less than three hours. If your car is unlucky enough to find itself in one of these, chances are you’ll never see that car again.
What’s mad, is that cars are typically worth more as parts than as a whole. While a junk car may be worth only $500 in scrap metal, chances are the individual parts on that car are worth thousands. And chop shops know this.

My mother's car was stolen a few years ago. The thing is she lives in Berlin and you can get to Poland in an hour. After passing the border your car is probably gone forever. It wasn't even a luxury car. It was a freaking VW Polo but it was fairly new and a great transmission wich was the best you could get back then. I think thats probably the reason the car was on the wishlist. Oh yeah and the car wasn't recovered.

Actually, key fobs have made it easier to steal newer cars. Some fobs are always active(sending out signal) so all you need is a receiver and you're good to go. Then hold the receiver near the car and it can unlock and start the car(the car thinks it's the key). Then you drive the stolen car back to your shop and use a OBD2 code and make a new key and BOOM you got yourself a new car.

While working for a PD in SoCal, I received a call from Scotland Yard wanting to speak with our auto theft detective. While speaking with the Scotland Yard officer he stated he was calling about high price cars being stolen in SoCal that were ending up in Saudi Arabia. Apparently they were being driven straight to the docks and loaded onto ships. In another case, a Canadian Mountie called with a recovered vehicle stolen out of my city. He stated the vehicles, which were usually truck, were being placed in the back of a tractor-trailer and brought to Canada where they usually ended up on a ranch. A third was our citizens who couldn't pay for the vehicles would drive them across the boarder into Mexico. The only problem with this is that every vehicle's license plate is photographed when driven across the border, along with a photograph of the driver. It made for some bad days for those citizens when we told them they were being arrested for filing a false police report.

It was then reported to my work by a member of public as it was in their road for a whole weekend and it wasn’t normally there, by the time the police got there it had moved. A week later it was reported in another location but on fake plates this time. The police got there and it was recovered. The whole interior was damaged as all the panels had been snapped off and the passenger seatbelt had been cut right through. The locks and ignition were ruined as well… it was an expensive fix that the insurance dealt with.

Why the presumed joyriders thought stealing a car with a measly 54bhp and a suspension made from jello was a great idea, I will never fathom. Those old Micra K10s can be driven relatively hard but will happily toss you in a ditch and possibly kill you at the slightest mistake, they're essentially built from tinfoil. The majority of vehicles stolen in Ireland 🇮🇪 are exported to Nigeria by new Irish business people, but look at the bright side, lots of kids can now be driven to schoo in safetyl without being killed by tigers and lions, while the jungle can absorb and consume the extra emissions from these cheaper vehicals and turn them back into oxygen makers for the rest of the world

I bought a 2010 Porsche panamera turbo from a dealership in the Netherlands. I didn’t pick it up straight away as I had to move to the UK for a couples months for work. I bought the car in January 2022 and told the dealer that I would pick it up in August. To my surprise the dealer sent me a cryptic email 4 months later saying that I had picked up my car. I wasn’t even in the country. I came back to The Netherlands to check on my car but the dealership wasn’t even there. I sadly lost my car😢. (P.S if you see/seen my car number plate 89-NKV-4 Porsche Panamera champagne Brown with beige interior, please let me know)

I've seen that not all cars start on button but on the old key lock insert; old way. Okay they break into the car by opening the doors but how do they start it without an actual key? It's not like they break under it so easily and connect few wires.

Motor vehicle theft may be harder with coded keys etc., but violent home invasion, car jacking and theft from the home is going up. So it might save insurance companies money, but is it placing owners in a more dangerous position? Just a thought

One way of stealing a car is that the thieves have an electronic box that will reprogram a blank key to the car. Thanks to the EU competition laws, an independent garage has to be able to do this, so the thieves clone this technique. This was shown to me whilst working in Estonia by the Police who had intercepted a shipment of car bound for Russia.

95% of all stolen US cars/trucks/SUVs end up in Mexico/Central/South America. Why? Shipping costs!!! Only hyper-luxury cars make it out of a Continent AFTER registration...it simply isn't worth the risk and expense except on TV or in the movies. Now stealing them on the BOAT in the containers is a different story! Even Beemers and Benz and Rolls when they get to a port are too risky to steal since 9/11. Italian hyper cars are "baby-sat" the entire trip with guys delivering shotguns sleeping in the containers. Several ex-deputy sheriff friends do that now that they've "retired" and many of those cars are air freighted worldwide, just like Formula 1 race cars with "babysitters". 8 of 10 cars stolen in the US end up in insurance company parts yards. A $20K used car is worth $60K in parts.

New Mercedes have a tracking system build into the engine management system . If you own your car outright and it's stolen , if there's no finance on it , you're on your own . If it's on a lease plan and you default , they can find it anywhere in the world . However is some third world countries they may not be able to retrieve it .
