Thank you Sir! When Olympic champ gives you advices you'd better follow and listen! I am long time bunker trap shooter winning a lot of local competitions but I never competed on olympic level. This video is essential for proper trap shooting, and I agree with everything you said. I am RH, 1 1/2 eye shooter with dominant R eye. If I fully open both eyes I see 2 barrels(that really bugs me), so half closing L eye makes double barrel dissapear but I am aware it is handicap. I have different aproach. I place gun below bunker lips(about 0.5-1m) and then I swing miliseconds before calling a bird toward eye focus area like in your video so shotgun is in movement(has momentum) even before calling/sighting the bird and then "swing" just naturaly with body movement continues to follow the bird. But I would say that in my swing during bird call "swing" comes exactly to point where you said for both eye shooters at the time of "aaaa" bird call. Grettings from Croatia. The moving gun technique as you describe is quite common. The former USSR trap shooter Alexander Asimov won several world titles using this method in the 70’s and ‘80’s Thanks for your kind words

Hey coach thank you millions! This issue is a nightmare for us. Tons of attitudes around this matter but not a solid start point to share clearly. And here you are with a brilliant video. Two questions please: 1. Is below recipe correct for two eyed Olympic shooters ? * barrel is @min. 50 cm above the lip ? * a soft focus is around the bead excluding below the barrel, meaning it shall be like a crescent ? * focus on something small in the zone intercepting within the hypothetical crescent ? * focusing on stg. will help quiet eye then call ? * in order not to miss the flash, we must hypothetically distribute the focus as like: 70% crescent, 10% barrel/bead and 20% below the barrel ? 2. In ideal conditions is it better to have always a concrete hold point no matter the scheme is and no matter you exactly know the cross points per station; or is it better to have a dynamic hold point according to the cross points per schemes and stations ?

Thank you! I have been using soft focusing and I am a right hand shooter with a dominant left eye. Lately I have been averaging 21 birds (last three weeks) But before that I was all over the place 15/20 for some reason. Maybe I lost my focus.

I hope to try it as this is something i am struggling, specially on the left targets, some time i feel on left target my left eye take over, but when i do eye dominance test, its right eye. In practice i check the focus, it is aligned to right eye, but in actual shooting i am seeing left target solid, but still missing and coach says i am ahead and moved with the target. So will try it out what you have suggested to look out.

Hi Mark ........I live several time zones away form you , thanks for producing so informative videos on trap . I have just started ISSF trap shooting and your videos are helping a lot. Can you kindly share or make videos with ShotTKam , five shots from each trap station. It may help a lot to understand the target acquiring and reaction time sequence. As in above video at 2.15 . I feel, watching a whole series may help learn about the process of last few seconds and as on screen dry practice to help in developing a mental routine.

I believe that some two eye shooters hold the gun hold point at the spot you said but they look down from the barrel.

I certainly wouldn't recommend that. I always like to connect your eyes over the top of the barrel. i hate hearing people that moves their eyes away from this position, but i am sure some do and some are more successful than others in doing so.

The sight is only a reference point in your fore-vision to let you know where the end of the barrel is. Some people need brighter sights than others for this reference

Hi Mark and Loren happy new year, every Olympic trap stand is different in terms of background. Some are uphill others have no terrain behind them at all to orient yourself anywhere. My ground hold point is clear, I have it roughly as you describe in the video. But where do I park my eyes above the gun to wait for the target? A former Olympia colleague of yours here from Germany, whom you know very well, said a brasscap of an rc4 above it. So above the gunholdpoint. I don't really get on well with this, as it creates uncertainty in the absence of a background or with a rising background. Do you have another recipe I can try? Thx a lot Andy

Its a complex topic, but this much I know, Regardless of where you start your vision when calling for the target, or even how broad you are initially using your peripheral vision, what you must do when setting your eyes is keep them perfectly still for a couple of seconds before asking the target to be released. Research a topic called "Quiet Eye" and you will have your answer.

It’s personal preference based on how high your gun starts. Most people prefer just beyond the barrel but the most important factor is to keep your eyes absolutely still for at least two seconds

I like the gun a little higher if you shoot with both eyes, but many people start on the lip therefore your eyes are slightly above this point. Wide focus so your peripheral vision will work for you

Hi guys, so far I have always separated the hold point of the gun and eye by about a brasscup of an RC4. After hearing Russel's advice in the video about not separating the gun and eye, I tried it out. I felt very comfortable with it straight away and finally shot my first full round in Olympic trap. It felt like the knot had burst. Until yesterday 😂 when I couldn't repeat it. My eyes were back over the barrel, but there was an uncertainty as to whether it was better to look into the distance at a point or blurry behind the shotgun. I hope I have explained it well. My holdpoint of the shotgun is 6m behind the edge, then there is a valley where there is no other reference point. I can look 100m further to the wall of the quarry or into the air. Do you have any tips on how to get a consistent setup for changing backgrounds and how far out behind the gun with my peripheral vision?

It's a good question. It is just over the top of the barrel. I hate to say a certain distance as that would imply that you should be focusing on something

Hi Randall. Everyone is different, but on many shooting ranges they actually measure the time from when the target is called for until the first shot is fired. In Double Trap 4/10’s of a second was a common timing for the first shot

There are shooters who call the target as soon as they stop the shotgun and others wait several seconds after setting the hold point. How long to wait at the hold point with a smooth vision before saying pull. Which do you think is the best method

There sadly is no set time. Everyones eyes adjust differently. The average is around 2 to 4 seconds

Hi mark are you advocating placing the bead on the white mark and raising your eyes with a soft focus about 5-10 meters in front of the trap house?

It varies from person to person but I think you need to look out over the gun if you start on the trap house. I don’t advocate starting on the trap if you are a shooter using two eyes

Correct. The red bead is the gun bead to help explain where your eyes should be in relation to the end of the barrel

@@GoShooting In essence, just "relax" the eyes over the barrel looking in a broad area (i.e not focusing on a bush 200 m in the distance). Then, when the target is released, pick up the flash and move your eyes to the target (before moving the barrel) and then, "tighten" up on the vision (like a draw string on a duffel bag) and then once the target is in focus, "paint" your barrel over the target and fire.

I am a one-eye shooter. I hold at the top of the house and look about a foot over the barrel. Is that too much? Should I look closer to the barrel? When I've tried that it seems that my eye sometimes focuses on the barrel and not the emerging target. Thanks.
