Where do native bees and other wildlife go in winter?

Once, I accidently 'shoveled" up a bumble bee that had just buried itself in some leaf litter in a terraced part of my yard. I put the shovel full of leaves back where I got it and left the rest as it was. Now I leave the leaves alone!
