You didn’t play it on release. It was an absolute mess. That was par for the course for an Obsidian release for a long time. KOTOR 2 was literally unable to be played at release. One question I want asked is why dosent freeside/north or west have any connection to each directly and almost no crossover quests?
@nvRanger3 күн бұрын
I would imagine that it has to do with different designers working on different areas and trying to keep things a bit streamlined in a cluttered section of the map. I also imagine that they try and give unique identity to each neighborhood with the quests involved in them. It would be hard as players to distinguish them if we were just going all over the place for the relevant quests. Its a good question though, one only the devs could answer.
@joshanderson93912 күн бұрын
Might also be due to console memory issues. That’s why the Strip is split into 3 seperate parts so maybe that also occurred in Freeside
@Cakesadamant2 күн бұрын
@@joshanderson9391 that's exactly why Freeside is split up into 2 (technically 3 if you count the Old Morman Fort, which I do) areas. Triangle City has a nice breakdown on the development of New Vegas, if you haven't heard of him, I highly recommend giving it a watch when you're not too busy

So, I noticed during one of the shots of the side of the locomotives that they read "Barstow Express AT&SF". The AT&SF, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (most well-known as just the "Santa Fe"), was a real railroad company. But strangely enough... They didn't have tracks to Vegas. The closest they ever got appears to be off the bottom of the NV map. Although, while I am unable to confirm whether it was an AT&SF subsidiary, there was a company that branched from their lines through Ivanpah and nearly to Primm. The real company that goes through Vegas is the Union Pacific, who are also the origin of that shield design on top of the station in Freeside at 15:36, although that may be down to nvRanger's mod, I'd need someone to confirm. The Union Pacific got control of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, who had originally built the line through Vegas. The LA&SL met the AT&SF off the bottom of the map, however, at a junction in Daggett, appropriately enough, near Barstow, bringing us in somewhat of a chaotic information loop back to the name on the engines (which appear to be EMD E-Units, either E7, E8, or E9s, probably E8s for both statistical and AT&SF historical reasons) in game. Thanks for reading that wall of text, to those that do.
@nvRangerКүн бұрын
The station in frreeside does get its design from the Tale of Two Wastelands mod. You can access Fallout 3 by taking the train inside the station. Perhaps the devs of that mod are familiar with the rail lines of the area. Great information, someone else mentioned some similar info (not exactly the same). I find it really cool, but I don't know much at all about it. Perhaps the NCR is resonsible for bringing those locomotives into the region. I should mention that I do not believe the one at calville bay has the Barstow branding in vanilla. It may in a shot or two of mine due to a retexture mod (my fault).
@wesleylowe42562 күн бұрын
New Vegas was clearly rushed but you can tell they poured love into the game and built a world first then filled that world with as much content as they could given the time they had, rather than just throwing a bunch of stuff together without any forethought. It’s really quite sad because you can feel a little bit of that touch in fallout 4, but it feels like instead of fleshing everything out at some point they just decided to slap a bunch of interesting areas into the settlement system, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but doesn’t exactly entice players to ever go back except to juggle resources around before you unlock that one perk that lets you establish supply routes which isn’t exactly fun. Then you move to starfield and you have like 2 locations you’d ever want to go. I think I’ve revisited a base I made like once. It’s just so barren it’s actually physically annoying
@nvRanger2 күн бұрын
It’s funny because the Fallout 4 settlement gets a lot of heat because of the other lacking elements but I would love that system in new vegas to build upon the world after you beat the game.

The way I’d do this would be to make the quest givers The Followers. Maybe the group in the railway tower is there to find a full map of the rail lines of Nevada. The introduction quest is to go and find the rail map, maybe in one of the rail stations. Once you give them the map they then task the player with working with clearing teams. The motive for The Followers could be to establish a trade relationship with the Boomers, once done the rail line is then operational and you can take a train from the Boomers in the north to the tower in the centre(ish) then down to near the Mojave Outpost. Then throw in a few side quests about clearing other disruptions to open more stops and help maintain the railway. And a couple of scavenging quests to find parts! That’s how I would structure the quest line anyway.
@deezboyeed67642 күн бұрын
The only difficult part would be the animations to be honest, it wouldnt be too difficult to get everything else in. Even more so if you skip the animations and make it essentially fast travel points

The comments around the area of new vegas is interesting because games rarely make settings where its actually a world thats a shadow of its former self, when that was quite a common experience in post roman history and elsewhere in world history. The city of Rome had 1 million people in 100 AD, then only 50,000 for large parts of the middle ages. Living in new Vegas, looking on the trains and old buildings, probably feels a lot like a Roman walking through the overgrown coliseum.

While Repconn does have a guided tour, I think a lot of the employees might also be using the train station. The Rock Crushing plant might have originally be used for crushing limestone to be used at a concrete plant, or for crushing other stones into gravel, possibly for cement (mix of concrete, sand, and gravel) or train track ballast. Or for crushing ore-bearing stone to be used at the steel plant. In any case it seems like a useful place given that it's near a trainline with such things. Just something to keep in mind if you do get into office for the NCR. As for the train wall, I guess I shouldn't underestimate the capabilities of a large quantity of weirdoes tripping on hallucinogens, stimulants, and synthetic steroids.

one thing that annoys me about the railways in this game is that the sloped tracks change elevation way to steep. Real trains need very low gradients to allow them to climb since their steel wheels don’t have enough friction to climb anything to steep
@nvRangerКүн бұрын
That’s fair, another person noted the same. The likely reason is that the games map is a scaled down version of the real region, so what irl might be a gradual change over many miles is condensed into a much shorter span. Also, cheap explanation is maybe future sci-fi trains can do it

8:33 I was waiting for him to mention this, but right here is a good example of a huge problem for trains, they can't change gradient like this, i can promise you've never seen a functioning railroad dip wildly like this, take a look next time you see a rail road, they have to keep them level, even a 2% grade is a massive deal for a train to traverse and it needs way more space than this, Bethesdas real bad about putting tracks in the world, like Grey garden and oberland station
@nvRanger2 күн бұрын
Interesting, thanks for the information. There’s another point similarly unrealistic on the way up towards Boomer territory and down towards Gypsum. Perhaps Fallout has futuristic/sci fi trains though, worth considering.

I dont understand how can people say legion has better logistics and economy when its literally just a primitive raider gang and meanwhile ncr has trucks, trains, planes, manufacturing, utilize heavy machinery for resource extraction and processing, citizens wealthy enough to travel on vacation to gamble in vegas. They are one of the only few factions in the entire franchise to actually have standard issue and mass manufactured equipment they are actively producing They are essentially a modern industrial nation on a UN peacekeeping mission in a war torn african nation
@nvRanger2 күн бұрын
I agree with aspects of what you’re saying here BUT We don’t know too much about the Legion in their homeland And the NCR is on a war of conquest, not peace. Aaron Kimball, the current president, was a general and war hero in the “pacification of the Mojave” which is the NCR’s military campaign to annex the region.

Would some of those dirt/sand piles risk derailment? Do you take a steam deck or switch with you?
@JustAGamerA10 сағат бұрын
@@nvRanger Landslides IRL are a derailment. Most of the stuff shown in game though would take less then a day to clear. A modern railroad could have the whole mojave as we see it in service and running trains within a week. Honestly, with the exception of the large rocks, most of those slides could be cleaned up in under an hour. In a pinch you really only need to clear off the top of the rail, and enough room on the inside of the rail so that the flange on the wheels doesn't ride up and derail. I work locals mainly, so I leave my yard with cars for customers and go up and down the main line placing new cars for them, and pulling the cars they need shipped out, and go back to the yard I started in. I'm at home in my own bed every night. no need for a steamdeck/switch for me since i don't spend any time in hotels. PS: its not a locomotive car. Its just a locomotive or engine.

@ Awesome, thanks for the info. Sounds like a good deal if you get to sleep in your own bed. I'll keep the locomotive correction in mind.

I know you already know ArmyofOtters already posted a video of railroads of NV while you were editing this one. However, should you at least point out Otter’s version in the description despite informational differences?
@nvRangerКүн бұрын
Why? Got nothing against him and we have spoken amicably, but he’s not sponsoring me. I haven’t even watched his version. Strange of you to tell me to do something like that. What goes in my descriptions is up to me. Suggestions are one thing, telling me I should do something that has nothing to do with you isn’t appropriate.
@collegiatebuilds4505Күн бұрын
@ it’s just good ethics and PR in my opinion, also because of timing
@nvRangerКүн бұрын
What does ethics have to do with it? I haven’t watched his version, but I’m to send people to content approximating my own without validation. That’s nonsense, I don’t understand your angle or your concern.
@collegiatebuilds4505Күн бұрын
@ it’s about building discussion and community. Simply put. I think we should share what others think about a certain topic; I.e. railroads/roads in New Vegas. Are you afraid you’ll lose viewership? You create content, content is meant to be shared and projected.
@nvRangerКүн бұрын
My video doing well will help his in the algorithm and vice versa. You on the other hand have very little relevance in the sharing of either. You just over-value your opinion. Description links will not make a relevant shift. Well constructed descriptions help SEO. Your ignorant blathering backed by projecting your agenda onto others only helps by adding comments and engagement to my video, further “sharing” it.
