@@UltimateTechHub Cool thanks for the reply, yeah it's because I recently had a router that just stopped working, it would turn on and then the lights would blink orange and it would just shut off no lights or anything and make this weird noise. I was wondering if maybe because it was connected directly that that might be an issue. The router was kind of old already, don't know maybe it just gave out or something.

I moved into a 2 year old house and was excited about the Ethernet and coax ports in each room. That turned to dismay when I found the patch panel in a closet with unfinished cables for both and no router or modem. I had to get internet so I went with AT&T wireless. Man, Ethernet would’ve been nice though.

The ethernet cables can be finished by terminating them on both ends and use a Network cable tester to track each cable to each room. You can then label them and then add the modem and router to get internet to each room. I have over 100 videos on how to do this! Good luck and keep me posted!

Question: Our "internet hub" is located, typically, in a coat closet. However, the (cable) router and modem is located in one of the bedrooms, on the top shelf of a bookcase. Recently, we had a Spectrum tech here to deal with a drop in our wi-fi signal. I asked the tech if I could just run an ethernet cable from the router to the Ethernet port in the wall to "light up" all the ports in the house. He said, no...it would not work without some kind of adapter. Do you know what he was referring to and how to do this so I can have wired internet wherever I want it? Thanks!

Home Networking Question CAT5 I purchased a new Orbi Mesh system and looking to take advantage of my CAT5 network that was prewired in our house. For context: Going from Modem to Orbi Router. To CAT5 wall plug in home office. CAT5 setup is located in master bedroom. In this panel Im taking the CAT5 from the Office to the Netgear 108 switch. Im also plugging in the Orbi satellites to the CAT5 plugs in various locations in the house. Im using all CAT6 cables to maximize internet. Plan is for 1.2mb. When Im plugging into switch none of the lights are turning on. I did the terminating myself. But that was easy. My understanding is this should work. That the CAT5 is bidirectional so going from the office to the switch should be fine.

QUESTION: I have wall Ethernet Jack which I intend to hardwire and connect my tv. However, when I go to my central hub where all the Ethernet cables/wires converge, I am not sure which of the cables/wires corresponds to the one I am trying to hard wire my tv with the wall outlet. Is there a way to find or identify the right corresponding cable so I can then plug that into a switch. There are just too many loose lines and I don’t know which is which. Btw, it is just loose wires, so I have to create an Ethernet tip/Jack to plug into a switch box. Thank you
@UltimateTechHub
@UltimateTechHub Жыл бұрын
You will need to terminate the loose ethernet wires into RJ4 connectors and then use a network cable tester that has mapping tools to find which wire goes to the TV or just plug one wire in at a time to the central hub and check your TV for internet connectivity. Also when you decide to do this make sure to label the ethernet in your central Hub to avoid this problem. I label all of my ethernet cables.

@UltimateTechHub
@UltimateTechHub 20 күн бұрын
Yes but you need the modem plugged into the ISP cable ( coax, fiber, ethernet ) then plug the router into the modem. Then you need the ethernet from the other rooms from the panel plugged into the routers LAN ports. I have my modem in the Network Panel but my TPLINK GE800 is in my gaming room. So I have the ethernet cable from the fiber modem ( ONT ) that runs to the game room that connects to the router. Then I have an ethernet cable that goes from the routers LAN port back to the network panel and plugs into a 10 port switch and the other 8 ethernet ports from the other rooms connect to the switch. This is why I always recommend having 2 ethernet ports per room. You can install the router in any room that has 2 ethernet ports. Hope this helps.

I don't see a network panel anywhere in my house built in 2018. I do see about 4 or 5 white cables going to different rooms where they sit behind coaxial jacks, but the cables have CAT5 printed on them. They do all come to a central location but they end in a coiled bundle that has no connectors, just kinked ends wrapped in electrical tape. Does this mean I have to go buy a network panel, and if so, how do i put them in? We have been getting internet from a line of sight modem on the roof our ISP installed. We plugged the other end into our wireless router and that has worked for us but i would like to make use of the wired connections we seem to have.

You don't need a Network Panel but its nice to keep everything enclosed and hidden away. Your situation is fine and you don't need a panel. Where is you wireless router located? You need to move the wireless router to the area where the cat5 cables are located. Then plug those cat5 cables into your LAN ports on the wireless router. If you have too many cat5 cables you can buy a cheap switch to expand the wired network off of the wireless router. Now your rooms will have full network connectivity. Good luck and keep me posted. Very basic question. What's the advantage of running so many ethernet wires? I know you can hardwire internet to tv's, gams, other devices, but then what. Just starting to look into wiring our new build home. I guess I'm assuming you can then watch the signal from any device on another device? Are there other things needed to achieve that?

If you are building a new home run cat6 or cat6a ( 10gig speeds) to every room in your house. If you can afford it run 2 cat6 to every room. It's always good to have a back up in case 1 wire fails. All of the wires should meet up in 1 location where your modem , router and switch will be like a network panel or server rack. The advantages are super fast always on connections which allow streaming 4k or even 8k video with zero lag. Each room could have a switch to add more wired connections. Wired Iis always better than wireless. Also install a cat6 in the ceiling in the center of the house for a wireless access point. I have over 80 networking videos so check them out to help answer more of your questions.

You can do this yourself. The white cords in the box should be coax for your modem. Well you know your home better than any of us here, I would hope. You'll have to figure out where those ethernet cables go to. They may end up in a dedicated network closet, a closet in a room or some media room. Once you locate the cables, there should be a patch panel of some sort where they terminate or they may have some RJ-45 plugs. You will need to have your internet equipment in that room to plug in ethernt cables from the router to the panel or plug the cables coming from the various rooms to your router. If you need more ports than what your router has, you can plug in a network switch. Once you make the connections, your ports in your rooms will be active and you can use them.

As long as the cables in the wall all run to a modem/router then yes. If you have your modem and router and you're just trying to plug your router into one of the port in the wall that won't work (as in that won't magically make all of the ports connected to the internet). As the top comment pointed out, some houses/apartments have the ports in the walls but they aren't connected to anything at the other end.
