While this is essentially true it should be noted there still a tiny amount of minerals and nitrogen that is, for the most part, obtained from the soil. This does add to the dry weight of the plant.

I've never actually looked this up, but I assumed as much...plants respirate CO2 and produce O2. Plants are carbon-based lifeforms, when we plant trees, they capture carbon. The carbon forms the structure of the tree. When we burn plants, we release carbon. It all made sense to me.

Most of a livings plants mass is from water it collects from its roots. A plant builds its structure from CO2 out the air and water.
