One of the best WW2 movies ever made. Tense and exciting all the way through. I remember seeing it as a small child at the drive in while my parents made out in the back seat.

I saw this in the theatre when I was 11. For some reason I sat in the front row. The opening scene of the junker’s flying thru the mountains on the panavision screen was so immersive I got airsick.

I also saw this when I was 11. With my Father and Brother. The ice pick scene on the cable car is etched in my memory. It now reminds me every time I make a baloney and ketchup sandwich.

No, but other ones, like the Focke-Wulf Fw 61 and Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 (both quite large) and the Flettner Fl 282 "Kolibri" (more compact, would have been suitable for landing in the inner court of this movie scene).

One guy is wearing a black SS uniform. This is not realistic. From 1937 the SS wore grey uniform to align their outer appearance to the Wehrmacht.
@xx3868Ай бұрын
Yes if the time period is correct, they got their "smart looking " uniforms later as they developed. I have a book on the SS uniforms and must look that up to see the changes. I always assumed this film was set deep into the war as they are talking about fronts and americans attacking and US didnt come in till later.

Seeing as there was a shortage of the once few genuine flyable WW2 German helicopters, which was none. Either damaged, destroyed or scrapped, the film makers had no choice but to use what they could find to simulate as a WW2 era German helicopter. The helicopter is also mentioned in the novel.

You need to watch more war movies, try Colditz, The Great Escape, Ice Cold in Alex, Dambusters, 633 Squadron, not to mention all those about the Navy , Submarines, The Man who never was, and there are many with many English actors made from that period.

How about German soldiers speaking Japanese? I guess you would feel much more comfortable, but much more un-realistic. A movie is not about reality show giving you somethiong real, just a form of entertainment to have a good time.
Never understood the objection to bombing the castle - the Americans would have accepted it as a casualty of war and their aircraft would have most likely participated - mind you watching it as a child I switched off in the cinema when I saw the Bell helicopter !
@motionattached2 ай бұрын
You could just take an easy approach to watch movies, since all of them are just acting things up for entertainment. Some directors are serious about trying to map to the reality, some directors are to make things ridiculously funny. 🎉

But no american Bomber of WW2 was capable to carry a bomb like a "Tallboy" or a "Grand Slam". Only No. 617 Squadron with it's modified Arcrafts was capable for such missions.

Perhaps they were also afraid of that "anti-aircraft cannon" in the courtyard? I saw a weapons video one time that referenced that gun. It said the only place worse than an enclosed deep courtyard to have such a gun would be in a small room with the doors and windows closed.
