Look at Mary Ure’s character in this movie. She’s a total bad ass. She’s not there as arm candy for Burton. She’s an important part of the team and his character also treats her with that respect. She doesn’t sacrifice her femininity to be an able and effective agent in the story. Awesome scenes of her not hesitating to be side by side with Eastwood blasting Germans and doing what it takes for them to succeed. And it all plays out naturally with no virtue signaling, no berating or de-intellectualizing of men to elevate her, no displays of unbelievable physical prowess, just her being someone who has their shit together. Heidi is also portrayed well by Ingrid Pitt in a similar manner. Modern movie makers could learn a lot from a movie like this on how women can be extremely capable without becoming ostensibly a man in their character and behavior.

Take a break from 4chan and whatever else alt forum you stalk. The premise is based on generous subjective interpretation of WWII (Brits & Muricans weren't the SS badass they think- look it up) so the women look just like Bond girls - silly caricature. If that's what you call femininity there's still plenty of that in modern movies. Only you also get the updated characters of men as well as women.

I was a standby prop on this film at a very young age about 21.We worked a month on pre production and 10 months shooting. So almost a year making good money working with legends. All the exterior shots were done in Germany. We lived in the Europa Hotel in Salzburg Austria and commuted daily into Germany for about 3 months. The remaining 8 months at MGM UK studios shooting all the interior shots. Due to the snow melting early the 2nd camera crew continued shooting long shots in the Italian and Swiss Alps. Burton was a good guy always telling good jokes and had his personal hairdresser in attendance always. You should have seen the entourage Liz Taylor had ( Royalty ) Eastwood had nobody, Eddie Silver his hairdresser hired by the production company etc. Eastwood worked out and jogged every day loved riding a BSA motorbike in the UK he purchased two, one for his stand in to ride with him. He always drank herbal tea when on the set. I know because it was my job to make it. Brian Hutton the director wore a black T shirt every day. At the end of the movie he gave his chauffer his white Rolls Royce!

Besides Kelly's Heroes Where Eagles Dare is one of my all time favorite war movies, the plot and dialog is way over the top but absolutely entertaining, as kids back then we would play W.E.D we would all want to be LT Shaefer (Eastwood) machine gunning and grenading countless lined up Germans--how does that castle hold so many men? The Bell helicopter (?!) the "Chuff" sound of the suppressed pistols, the unlimited ammo that they all have, the bottomless rucksacks of dynamite, the resonance of "Broadsword Calling Danny-Boy, come in Danny Boy" all fantastic to us kids, we loved it, and still do. Although with the desperate music in the background I find the fight scene on the cable car really awful to watch, and that brief false hope of the wounded men huddled on the floor of the cable car before it explodes gives the movie a really raw edge, any time it is on TV I will always watch it, never get bored and try to count up the kill ratio of Eastwood (I got to 80). As a matter of interest "Cinema Retro" magazine released a "Making Of" edition of Where Eagles Dare and is worthwhile hunting down, although it was later released in a limited edition (115 Pages) and is the bible of the behind the scenes of this epic classic, you can find out that Burton's constant drunkeness was an issue during production, how Eastwood settled into his role and enjoyed his time with the crew, the magazine is full of pictures and anecdotes and a worthwhile prize to the fan of this movie 🙂

OMG, I remember seeing this with " Kelly's Heroes ! " at a Chicago-area theater 🎥. That was about 50+ years ago. I loved the music soundtrack, the introduction, the cinematography, and how the story slowly builds up to the climax. They just don't make films like these anymore ! One slight error I noticed as far as I recall ; the Helicopter used in the movie was an " R-4" , and It wasn't utilized until the Korean War. And I don't recall the Germans or anyone else using 🤔 Helicopters during WW II. Other than that, I liked the movie a great deal. The movie that's based on the book goes into a lot more detail though.

@@JonathanEBoyd just a few quotes from "The longest day" to encourage you in watching it :D Gen. Blumentritt, of Feldmarshall Von Runstedt's headquarters in Normandy: ""We are living an historical moment. We are going to lose the war, because the glorious Fuhrer has taken a sleeping pill... and is not to be awakened. It's unbelievable. Think of it Kurt, don't ever forget it: We are witnessing something which historians will always say is completely improbable... and yet it is true. The Fuhrer is not to be awakened!!! I sometimes wonder which side God is on." --- Major Pluskat: My God! [focuses binoculars and looks back at his men] The invasion! They're coming! Wehrmacht Officer: [to soldiers] Alarm!!! Pluskat: [calls higher command in a panic] Herr Oberstleutnant! The invasion has come! Five thousand ships, there - there must be over five thousand ships out there!! Oberstleutnant Ocker: [ignorantly confident] Now get a hold of yourself, Pluskat. [sips coffee] The Americans and the British don't have half as that many ships all together. Pluskat: DAMMIT, IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, COME UP HERE AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!! - That's fantastic! That's unbelievable! I-I just can't believe it! I remember when first seeing Richard Burton say...we have come to surrender, I thought oh no, how are they going to get out of this one? The two of them riding in just one car without at least a truck full of heavily armed soldiers would never have happened...except in this movie! Out of the four who were killed in the car, I thought the one Clint pushed out the door had the best chance to survive and limp away with his machine gun. I guess Major Smith just had to kill the unarmed driver! We don't really see how the Major killed the guard, but the officer to his left certainly took a dive through the front window.
