I saw this in the theater when I was 8, it was the first "grown-up" movie my father took me to see. My eyes never left the screen, which for an 8 year old was HUGH. I loved it, and never forgot it. The chase in the snow-plow equipped bus at the end kept me on the edge of my seat. Looking back on it, the killing didn't really bother me, it was just good guys vs. bad guys in my mind. My son was 12 when it came out on VHS, and his reaction was exactly the same as mine had been years before.

I first saw it in the cinema too,on the first day of school Christmas holidays in December 1977 when I was 13. Riveted, though it wasn't until I'd seen it on telly at least a couple more times that I fully got the triple cross done by Smith (Richard Burton) with General Rosemeyer,Colonel Kramer et.al in the dialogue in the Schloss Adler dining room.

@goatboyful You're missing the point. Thomas dies on the rope because Smith tricked the German officer into believing him to be one of the men he is pursuing. Harrod was not a Nazi nor was he killed by Eastwood, Burton or Ure which is what this video was about. He was killed by one of the three Nazi spies. Don't remember his name but he was the one who fell from the cable car, he was the one standing behind Harrod when they jumped from the plane.

But also you get to "laugh" at some shots like at 1:14, that shot screams "DUMMY!" and also at 1:40 that shot screams "JUMP" not "FALL". But that just makes it cooler!

I believe the plot is loosely based on a true German fake-out movie "The Man Who Never Was " from 1955-56 era which is a true story and really happened. It's an excellent film in its own right, Michael Hordern who portrays Admiral Rolland in "Where Eagles Dare" is in it also.

The most memorable scene was the nazi who fell out of the tram all the way down to his death the look on his face still sticks with me to this day I will never ever forget that expression in his face its definitely up there with Janet Leigh death scene from psycho infact it's tied for first place IMO it's so sad actors and actresses back in the 60s and 70s knew how to pretend that they were dying today not so much that actress from cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone did a very very convincing job in the beginning of that film her death scene in which she is begging Sylvester to pull her up is very convincing just like that evil nazi who fell to his death along with Janet's shower sequence those three will always haunt me bravo to those respected actors for a job well done if any of you haven't seen cliffhanger watch that beginning and you will all know what I'm talking about i. Cried when she fell I even for some reason cried when that nazi fell all the way down even though he was a very bad guy all nazis are what a way to go all those other nazis that all got shot up by Clint. Richard and Mary all got it easy I would rather get shot then burned or fall such a long way down today's actors in 2022 can learn from Janet as well as those two great convincing actors fro where eagles dare as well as cliffhanger even actress patty Mccormick who did an equally great job when her character got burned up in the horror movie bug in the 1970s another great movie these actors today need to seriously watch movies like psycho bug eagles dare and cliffhanger and see how it is done anyway thanks to who ever decided to post clips from this awsome movie that I happily own on DVD be safe
