Recognised that map of AtoV straight away- mainly because I'm playing it right now. Just two different scales I'd say, with positives to be said for both. I think you're bang on the money about the attraction of this smaller scale though- tactical decision making whilst at the same time being privy to and able to affect, the bigger picture. This, and the best maps I've seen in a boardgame, are what have attracted me to this series. I fancied Arnhem but the current retail price is pretty eye watering! Thanks for the reviews- you've finally sold me on this series.

I agree with you on the scale but it would be nice to hear why the system itself is good to play. What aspects of it do you enjoy and which maybe miss the mark a tad?

+VT ViewfromtheTurret Thanks for the feedback. I did state at the outset of the video that I wasn't going to review mechanics or components as other sources have covered it. I also wanted to keep the video short. You make a fair point though. The best system write up is here: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/754334/initial-impressions-where-eagles-dare-part-2-grand

+Ty Snouffer Nice write up. Not sure how I missed that. BTW keep the plays coming. Always interesting.

+VT ViewfromtheTurret Thanks. I was thinking about it some more and I do think there is some room for "Why I like the mechanics" (as you suggest) vs. "How the mechanics work" (which is what I really wanted to stay away from). Small but meaningful nuance. Maybe I can add a short section of that in. Thanks!

Well said Ty. The perfect scale indeed.

Great! I always looked long and hard on this game. Whenever I pass by it, such as now. My main concern is actually playing the game. I play mostly two player solitaire and not normally games on the scale of multi maps. I can leave one map up, but not two. Would you say that this game would be a bad fit thinking about the space criteria?

+The Late Night Gamer I do most of my gaming via VASSAL so that helps. Having said that, 3 of the 5 WED scenarios fit on one map/one table. The Greatest Day has many more scenarios overall and more that fit in a smaller space. In either case, if you can't play the campaign game for these I'd look elsewhere.

+Ty Snouffer Thanks Ty. Don´t think I can play the campaign game sadly. I have No Question of Surrender, but there is something about the theme and setting of WED that ticks almost all of my boxes...

But the movie "Where Eagles Dare" (starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood) was set in the Austrian Alps (hence the reason for the reference to Eagles), and had nothing whatsoever to do with the Eindhoven operation of WW2. Please explain...

The US 101s Airborne is known as the "Screaming Eagles" and they are a key division in the game.
@lorddaver57295 жыл бұрын
@@GamesfromtheFront No. You don't understand. You are talking about some computer game called, for some reason, "Where Eagles Dare" (and why is it called that, anyway? The 101st were not the only airborne troops involved in the real life battle. There were British and Polish paratroops as well.) I am talking about a well known WW2 movie made in 1968 starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, called "Where Eagles Dare" based on the book of the same name by Scottish author Alastair McLean (who also wrote "The Guns of Navarone"). The wargame has clearly breached the copyright laws...

@@lorddaver5729 So you are asking why is the movie named "Where Eagles Dare?" How the hell should I know?
@lorddaver57295 жыл бұрын
@@GamesfromtheFront No, I am NOT asking why the movie's called "Where Eagles Dare". I know why the movie is called that. Read again what I said. I had asked you why was the wargame is called "Where Eagles Dare" since it was not concerned with the same subject (a commando raid on a Bavarian Castle). Your explanation was that the the 101st "Screaming Eagles" were involved in Operation Market Garden - the real life WW2 operation on which your game was based. I then asked why was the "Screaming Eagles" name used as the basis for the title of the wargame, since they were not the only allied troops involved in the real life operation and that British and Polish airborne troops were also involved. Is that clear enough now? You still haven't answered the point...

@@lorddaver5729 This is hilarious. But fun. So I'll indulge. A few clarifications . . . first, it isn't my game in that I'm not the designer. Second, I'm sure what your "point' is. Seems like you just have a question. If you're not familiar with the series of games I'll make a point of saying the British 1st AB and the Polish are not in this game. XXX Corps is, granted, but so are German units. The 101st Airborne are on the cover too. I'll stick by my original answer. The MMP game "Where Eagles Dare" is named after/in reference to the 101st Airborne units that took part in the southern part of the Market Garden operation. While other names could have been chosen, they weren't, so we can't speculate on what could have been. I like the title "Hot Baloney Sandwich Shirt," but admittedly that doesn't make much sense in this case. If that answer doesn't satisfy, please reach out to MMP or Adam Starkweather the game's designer. Cheers!
