WHERE EAGLES DARE

THE MOVIE LOCATIONS. This classic 1968 World War 2 film, starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood and Mary Ure, was filmed in at various locations in Austria, most notably Werfen, Lofer and Ebensee. The 'Schloss Adler' features heavily in the film and is actually the castle 'Burg Hohenwerfen' that dominates Werfen. Although the film appears to be set in one location, the railway station and exterior castle shots were filmed at Werfen, whilst the street scenes and bar at 'Werfen' were actually filmed at Lofer. When they escape from the cable car, they fall into a river at Ebensee (in the film Werfen) before swimming to the bank and getting on the bus at Lofer!! The cable car base station was also filmed at Ebensee. (The cable car station at the castle was a studio set and model.) No cable car exists at Burg Hohenwerfen, only a small service lift. The castle is not really as high up as it appears in the film but the backdrop and model used help create a much more dramatic impression.

I've seen this film probably hundred times. I know every quotes and my wife has lost all her hope! One of the best war movies ever made. R Burton's best performance in summer of his career. And Major von Hapen will always be the ambassador for "zhe Disguzting Gentlemen Geschtapo Officer Fan Club." Hopefully there's nobody foolish enough trying to do a remake. That would be embarrassing. An uncle of mine Alistair Mackintosh went to school with Alistair Maclean ,who was a Church of Scotland minister`s son. Alistair`s parents are buried at Daviot Church of Scotland Highland Region.Not far from Inverness. My uncle is now 90 and doing well.

A great movie with great music and wonderful story of intrigue and bravery. I saw this at college in 1968 and saw it twice that evening, have seen it many times since including this past Memorial Day in 2020. Still a great movie, thanks for this video of that place.

The nostalgic romantic in me feels so happy alot of the locations to this classic war film remain,....one of my all-time favourite movies, I must have watched over 100 times , they don't seem to make great action war flicks like these anymore....mores the pity

As a boy I read everything that Alistair MacLean wrote so when the book Where Eagles Dare was published I devoured it and must have re-read it 4 or 5 times. Then the film arrived and although not quite as good as the book it is still stunning. I have seen the film many times since, last time was three nights ago, and only noticed on that showing where the locations were. Back in 1992 I spent an entire winters holiday in Werfenweng ,which is only a few kilometres away but I wish I had known then!

This movie was filmed the year I was born 1968. My Dad and I watch it every time it was on TV. Plus my Grandmother (Oma) was born in Austria. Go figure, I guess it's time for me to go back Home? Great movie.

Yes this is the train station in Werfen. ITS located just as you see in the movie, and you have to walk over the same bridge to enter the town of Werfen.

Beautiful, just beautiful, stirrs up great feelings and emotions as i absaloutly love whare eagles dare. There is a sadness in me to that things have been modernized, as i so want the place to be exactly like it is in the film. Its a feeling of i will never see those great days ever again with the incredible cast of actors it had. Of course i watch the film regularly and see it all in it, its 53 years ago while im writing this this timeless classic was made. Clint eastwood and derrin nesbit are still alive today 2021. Only ones left from the origional cast. But yes its safe to say i love whare eagles dare, this is a wonderful piece of photography you have made here, thankyou. This is my favourite film of all time..strange really as I'm a big fan of ww2 realism films, and this is ww2 meets James Bond but is simply brilliant..my mum went to school with Richard Burton and knew him quite well...so I was allways going to be spoon fed this film..but I love it now as I did as a young lad..I think it's the sheer drama of the locations, the music, the stellar cast... and of course Richard Burton..they would never make a film like this nowadays but then again they wouldn't have all these great ingredients...the bit that allways makes me laugh though is how on earth the people in the cable car didnt hear all the soldiers clumping about on the roof of the car :D..those cable cars are like tin boxes and you'd be aware of a tiny sparrow tip toeing on top..but I'm overthinking it..just soak it all in and enjoy !!

INteresting to see the inside of the castle having only seen it from a distance in September as we came back to Salzburg airport from Slovenia where our group had a fabulous time climbing in the mountains. My shot introducing my video of our Salzberg visit was a real stunner despite being through the coach window (our local newspaper editor though so too and used it as a 'reader's picture' when we got home. Well chuffed! Please have a look at it . Called 'The Sound of Music?? War Quiz?Mozart's Salzburg' or something like that! :)

excellent, I visited Werfen a few years ago, its an easy train trip from Salzburg and you alight at the station there and walk over the bridge with the castle over to your right, just as in the movie. We were expecting to find signed photos of Eastwood and Burton adorning in the cafes there but no evidence of the film ever being shot there remains, I don't think the locals remember it at all!! there is a steep path to the castle, no actual cable car there, the shot through Eastwoods binoculars of the cable car approaching the castle was a miniature.
