Pastor Jordan, thank you very much for your teachings, they are a huge blessing. I will be teaching for a few days about Genesis soon so I have been listening to a lot of your sermons. I have a question if you have time to answer/think about this. In this sermon you were saying that Isaac should have trusted that God would have protected him so he has no need to be deceitful, but in the sermon about Simeon and Levi deceiving Shechem (Genesis 34) you said that they were right to deceive Shechem because they were at war and were outnumbered. What led to your different conclusions? Was it that in the latter passage there wasn't a promise for God specifically about the situation they were in?

Joshua, as you noted, the differing conclusions were due to differing contexts and circumstances.

Around @18:45 and @20:10 you mention Genesis 26:5 but you don't give much explanation. This is a curious verse, how can it be that a great man of faith was super obedient to all the commandments, statutes, and laws? Why does the Bible say that the father of the faith kept the laws and statutes? Isn't this legalism?
@JordanNealRogers Жыл бұрын
Legalism is the false teaching that one is saved by obedience to laws. The Bible teaches that no one is saved through obedience to the Law because no one actually keeps the Law, since all mankind is sinful. The Bible teaches that a person is saved by faith, and that faith will ultimately be demonstrated through obedience to the commands of God. A person is not saved by their obedience, but they are saved by faith, and their faith is demonstrated by obedience to the commands of God.

@@JordanNealRogers You said that although obedience cannot save you it is evidence of one's faith and since people are saved by faith then obedience is a necessary to establish what is necessary for salvation. You said "their faith is demonstrated by obedience to the commands of God" hence a Christian who does not seek to be obedient is rejecting faith based salvation. This is why I asked about Abraham who was very obedient to the statutes and commandments even without Moses.

What I am saying is that faith without works of obedience is dead. That is, faith without works is not faith at all. This is what James, the brother of the Lord Jesus said: "So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works." (James 2:17-18) The faith that attains salvation is the same faith that will inevitably produce works of obedience.
