The January 2024 transfer window was bizarrely quiet.
Premier League clubs spent just £100m, which was more than eight-times less than in the winter of 2023. Why?
Where have all the transfers gone?
Nick Miller writes, Philippe Fenner illustrates.

There are quite few reasons for it: 1) Most of this years budget was spent in summer already. 2) The reason why striker and GK were not fully addressed last year (only backup options basically) is, that there were no available option worth the money - so CFC is waiting for summer, when there should be some new ones available. 3) You need to offload some of the players to have space in the squad, which was hard this winter.

If English clubs really had to make do with what they can really afford to spend in order to stay profitable, we wouldn't have sold Antony to Man United for nearly 100 million. 🤣 And Benfica surely would have to settle with far smaller deals as well, even though both your and my club really depend on these transfers to keep the business afloat and be somewhat competitive in Europe. I'm rather surprised why no one, not even The Athletic or Tifo, has ever mentioned one important FFP rule adjustment made due to COVID that has now affected PL clubs, including the drop in spending during recent 2-3 windows. There was a huge allowance given especially for wage bill YoY increase, and I believe many clubs took advantage of this - some of them like Everton lost that gamble and are now paying for the price for it.

I think the Winter break that's added this year contributes to this as well, almost no games played in january means teams aren't gonna get caught up on panic buying because of huge run of losees etc. a lot of teams only played 1 or 2 league matches in january and also have a lot of players not available due to international cups, excuses for possible bad form and no panic buying because of lack of games being played. Also side note, If a team is in deep trouble they will make the gamble no matter what, but this year with a set of weak promotion teams meant no relegation threats right now for most non promoted team further decreases their motivation to make a purchase or loan. Too many compounding reasons and the financial struggles made a quiet transfer window an unanimous decision across all teams

I know it's partly because clubs are being more sensible but also I think the prices for top players (which drag up prices for mid-level players, etc) are outlandish compared to the revenue most top clubs can generate. 9 figure amounts on a single player is insane - just takes one career ending tackle/injury, and can't get two or three players each year for that amount. Why clubs are investing in their academies I imagine

You also have to consider that international tournaments slowed transfers as well. For example, rumors went around that Leverkusen were thinking of selling Hincapié, but upon losing tapsoba and another CB to AFCON, they kept Hincapié. A lot of last years transfer window was propelled by the World Cup too.

Tifo misrepresenting Wolves’s summer window, not really a surprise since I doubt they care about non-big six sides and Newcastle (and maybe Leeds). Wolves sold a lot of players true, but the vast majority of them had barely played during the 2nd half of the season. The only two who were actual regulars were Neves and Nunes, who were sold for £100m combined and the funds reinvested. We didn’t “get rid of most of the squad”, we cleared out dead wood and hangers on from the Nuno days

I hope the trend will reverse soon so clubs start spending less. The insane amounts of money coming in from media rights (yes, I am looking at you Premier League) have turned clubs into profit making machines and are straying away from what brought fans to the game in the first place: the beauty of the sport. It's getting more and more difficult and expensive to see your team live on the pitch and ironically same for seeing them on TV (or online). If the leagues put a cap on spending I think good quality football can make a comeback. The biggest proof of too much money harming a team can be seen at Man United - one of the most famous teams of the 2000' are now involved in endless struggles and many of their players became arrogant as a result of having outrageous wages leading to poor results. I hate seeing players being comfortable at a club and forgetting why they were brought in the first place. Respect for fans in Germany fighting back against those "investors" looking to ruin an already unbalanced league. Hopefully Bayern's dominance is stopped this year because it's getting repetitive to see the same results every year.

Wolves made their January dealing last year and it was successful because they sirvived for another season. Many factors why most clubs were reserved in their spending. FFP, not many game changing players are available in the market and the three promoted side that are absolutely terrible. Plus Nottingham and Everton(got their points deduction reduced now) could face points deduction for breaching FFP. Manchester United just got their minority owners now, Newcastle had to sell players just to balance the books and City have enough star quality that they don't need to sign anyone in January.

@@zuolat But the reality is that the 115 charges are actually just around 5 charges repeated over multiple seasons, so I suspect it will very much be an all-or-nothing thing (or at least most-or-nothing). They're not likely to have been giving dodgy sponsorships in some seasons, but not in others. They will have either done it for the whole period they're accused of, or not at all. The idea that because they've received so many charges, some of them must be true simply isn't the way these things work. If the charges aren't true for one year, they will almost certainly not be true for all of the other years too, and vice-versa.
