Omni-Man is legit my favourite character. He's been indoctrinated into this fucked up "Viltrumite master race" philosophy, literally for thousands of years. 20 years on Earth is like a small blip in his lifespan but he still ended up caring enough to basically betray his homeworld. I'M NOT SAYING HE'S A GOOD GUY. He's totally fucking evil at this point still, but I find what's going on in his head really interesting. Like he's being deprogrammed from a fucked up indoctrination. When he's screaming at Mark about how everyone he loves will be gone and Mark will still be here, he's expressing his own insecurities about it. He loves Debbie and doesn't want her to die. He loves Art too. He doesn't want to care about them because he doesn't want it to hurt when they die. He doesn't want to care. His whole insane massacre is just him saying "Why the fuck should I care about anyone on Earth? Look at how fragile they are!" Like this dude is seriously afraid of love at this point.

Well said. One of the recurring horror themes in the show is how fucked up things can get when you leave the regular human's perspective of time relative to their lifespan, and Omni Man's betrayal is a great example of that concept. When you have the perspective of a person that has already lived for a thousand years and will continue living for thousands more, you will naturally develop a vastly different set of values compared to a person who will die before a single century passes. Mark responding to his father with love despite being shown hatred and contempt is such a powerful moment. Considering how the comics go, I'm not sure how they'll adapt future arcs given how fucking brutal the subway scene is. It's hard to see Omni Man as anything other than a villain or a threat that NEEDS to be put down after that display of destruction
@Morilore3 жыл бұрын
I don't buy Omni-man's excuses about lifespan. Like OP said, I think all that stuff is just him trying to manage his own cognitive dissonance. Per the flashback, Viltrumites are expected to be OK with brutal, deadly violence even against each other. How does lifespan explain that? The real explanation for all this is: they have a disgusting fascistic eugenicist ideology and Omni-man is a career soldier in a brutal imperialist military.

It honestly makes sense calling his mom a pet. It sounds messed up, it IS messed up, but that doesnt mean he doesn't or didn't love her. But when she has not even 1% of his life span, it means that her entire relationship is merely a fleeting moment in the span of his life and the romantic relationship is trivial in the grand scheme of things.
@blobbie95833 жыл бұрын
I think a better line would have been for him to refer to her as a "temporary pastime" or "finite interest" or something similar. She had more value than just a pet - in the most degrading, base sense in his point of view, she gave him a son. That's beyond a pet's worth. I think the writter overstretched Omni Man's ruthlessness. His time on Earth gave him a little more humanity than only thinking of her as a pet or insect or animal. I can understand him referring to every other human like that, but not to her specifically as that. But I'm just nit picking this one thing since you mentioned it. The writter/writters did phenomenal. This show was great and I want to start on the comics now.

@@blobbie9583 I think, the point of all the extreme violence nonchalantly inflicted by Omni-man was to show how fickle and weak humans are compared to his race, like ants are to us. His frame of reference is just not human, it’s far beyond human capabilities and comprehension (which is why repeatedly says that no one would understand). But, the issue with Omni-man referring to her as a pet is that he doesn’t savour the good times, short as they may be; I think he did once, pre-powered Mark times. The thing that I love about Invincible is that while it has a lot of gore its never done just for the sake of having gore or for gross out humour. Every time its used its done to leave an impact, whether it was the ending of episode 1, Mark getting beaten up by Battle Beast or this entire episode. A lot of shows don't show blood to keep it kid friendly but Invincible doesn't shy away from it and shows the messy side of a world with superheroes. The heroes don't always win, they don't always come out unscathed and rarely are there zero casualties.
@rubyseye24663 жыл бұрын
oh yeah for sure. that’s probably why everytime gruesome scenes happen my mouth is left wide open, i’m just so shocked. i grew up watching hero shows where they don’t always show a lot of blood, or the hero does get hurt but is fine. that’s probably another reason why i was even more shocked going into this show. i don’t know what i was expecting but it wasn’t this. i am not disappointed in the slightest tho LMAO

You know, I'm pretty immune to most of the suffering I see in media. I've been watching anime for years, I've seen people torn to pieces, families destroyed... people put through shit you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy... and it just does not bother me the same way as it used to. It all sort of... blends. Heck, during Omni-Man's speech about the fragility and pointlessness of humanity... I kinda saw where he was coming from. That sounds awful, and yeah it kinda is, but I've been dealing with depression for years now which comes back from time to time, so yeah I can definitely identify with seeing life itself as kinda pointless. There was a time not so long ago where that was a given for me. But this show... seeing Mark go through all that to save the airman only to have his head crushed right before his eyes, seeing the father get an icecream for his little girl only for her to be left fatherless. So much pain and fear and regret as what basically amounts to a natural disaster rolls through our regular ass modern lives, ending them in an instant. And what would have happened if they'd have lived another 50 years? More ice-creams? More flights in the jet? More days on the subway? I myself have struggled constantly with what the freaking POINT of life is besides having enough food to eat, water to drink and a roof above my head. This episode broke my heart, and that's not something a show can really... DO to me anymore. I felt awful watching those people die, watching their happiness and hopes crushed right before Mark's eyes with every single death a reminder that he ISN'T from earth. His father has literally thrown him through a planet at this point, and he WILL NOT DIE. He will outlive every single person on earth, and by the time he dies all of their lives will have ended a hundred times over. It might sound weird considering all that crap I've just spouted, but this episode actually reminded me of how stupid that view on life actually is, and it was Mark who reminded me of it. Mark himself has being struggling with the 'meaning' of being a Super-Hero from square one, the 'why' of the job. Is he doing it to impress his Dad, to live out his fantasy of being like him? But the more he does it, the more suffering and death he sees on a daily basis and he comes face to face again and again with the fragility of the happiness, hopes and lives of mankind. Every time he gets stronger and manages to help people, he's always faced with the people he couldn't, or the people he's letting down by trying and failing. This episode, Mark never stopped trying to save people, and I love the fact that even AFTER everything he did to help people... he still hadn't found his 'reason' by the end. Because what reason is needed to save a crying child, to see someone in pain, terrified for their lives and lend them a hand? Mark doesn't even hesitate for a MOMENT to help those people, and despite all that edgy bullshit I just said, even knowing that Omni-Man wasn't going to let Mark save ANYONE that day, I still felt so... relieved as Mark kept fighting to save people around him. Sure, life can suck sometimes and it's often unfair and can ultimately SEEM pointless... but it ISN'T. Debbie's speech really hit me in my heart, because isn't that what we all felt watching Mark struggle to save people from his father? He's not as old as Omni-Man, he didn't live through the purge of Viltrum and wasn't brought up in a society where mere survival by strength was the only goal and purpose of living; he still SEES the value of life, no matter how short and no matter how purposeless it can seem from the outside. The use of a sport to demonstrate this was perfect, because sports are literally just made up contests we have with each other for the sake of fun. Nobody's going to live or die, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter. And when you see the pure joy on Mark's face when he hits that home-run, struggles base to base and finally rounds them up... well, as someone who somehow identified with the perspective of a mass murdering lunatic, seeing Omni-Man become Nolan and cheer for his son... it reminded me that there really doesn't NEED to be a point. I don't need a reason to want to be happy, to want to help those around me be happy too and to live my life the way I want to live it. I don't need to question if what I want means anything, or wonder if it'll have any weight a hundred years after I'm dead. I'm ALIVE, the world is a freaking incredible place filled with incredible sights and experiences, and I'm done wasting it lamenting the things I can't change and are ironically far more pointless than the simple human joys I'd been questioning before. Because that more than anything really IS pointless.

Yep, the ole' existential horror of finding out someone in your family, someone you love is into something so terrible, you can forget having a normal, loving family EVER, EVER again. The first tears Mark shed when Nolan admitted he was not being controlled and it was "all me" really hurt. Didn't expect that.
