In English, CURRENT and recent monarch names are NOT translated. So, for example, the King of Spain is Felipe VI not Philip VI, even though all previous Felipe's are almost always referred to as Philip in English. Same with Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden (all previous Carl's are called Charles in English). I didn't know that Elizabeth II was called Isabel in Spanish. Queens named Isabella in Spain or Portugal are not called Elizabeth in English.

I'm British and dated a girl from Toronto for five years, and not only could I not tell where other North Americans were from, but she couldn't either. One time in the supermarket in the UK, we could hear an NA accent, and I asked her if they were Canadian or American. She couldn't tell. So we walked to the other end of the supermarket and could still hear them, so we concluded they were from the US.

11:40: there is a film with a similar premise: "Run Lola Run". (It's in German but I believe there exists an English version or at least English subtitles). The title character experiences the same day in 4 different ways. The only original difference is the exact second on which she leaves her house. One second earlier or two seconds later and her life takes dramatically different turns...

Great film. Very intriguing.
@BlameThande11 ай бұрын
What you say around 2:40 about translating names is interesting. In English we seem to have largely stopped doing it in the late 19th century. It does make a difference, because, say, the name of King Frederick William of Prussia sounds less sinister and 'other' to us than his descendant Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, for instance. The King of Spain who launched the Armada against England was Philip II, but we call the current Spanish King Felipe VI. Odd when you think about it. edit: On other points, CGPGrey has a video about the number of continents, and Bill Bryson's book "Made in America" contains some of the other names that the US founding fathers considered adopting.

The point you make about about the number of continents you might think there are is dependant on when / where you were at school reminds me of a recurring question that has been asked on the UK TV show "QI" various times over the last 20 years - "How many moons does the earth have?". There is a compilation of these on the QI KZbin channel, titled "QI Compilation | Alan VS The Moon(s)". Never sure how well known QI is outside the UK, but if you've not come across it before you might find it "Quite Interesting".

It always annoys me when people complain about someone saying Columbus "discovered" America. You don't have to be the first person to ever see or do something to be able to discover it for yourself or others. It's like if you're driving home from work and you take a different street that's 5 minutes quicker, you just "discovered" a new route for yourself. It doesn't mean other people didn't already know about that route. Children are constantly making "discoveries as they grow. The first time they see a Bumble Bee, that's a new discovery for them. A few weeks ago I discovered a new recipe for a delicious chicken and broccoli dish, I didn't create the recipe though and others knew about it, but I discovered it for myself. It's the same with Columbus, no he wasn't the first person to know about the continent. But the people of Europe didn't know about it, so he "discovered" it for the people of Europe.
@jerry235711 ай бұрын
It depends which people of Europe you're talking about. The Icelanders knew about Vinland, which was North America.

Love the “how many continents are there?” conversation: I recently got into a debate with a friend from Colombia about it. I was raised saying North America/South America whereas she says it’s just America. But you’ve got to think that if you say it’s just the one continent of America, that logic should push you to the conclusion there are only four continents: America, Eurasica (Europe, Asia, Africa), Australia, and Antarctica.

Canada and the United States sound similar because all the cities of North America share a “metropolitan” accent. It’s only when you leave the cities into the more rural areas do the accents come out strong. I think there are 2 reasons for this: 1. Cities are generally filled with people from all over, and must adapt to better communicate with each other, speaking more clearly and pronouncing everything as best as possible. 2. Rural regions are generally more tight nit with people who grew up together with a lot of inside jokes and slang from families going back generations. The accent is usually thickest with the elderly, and comes out strong when people are free to be themselves without worrying what anyone else thinks of them. I grew up in Atlantic Canada and would always talk a certain way with my friends and family, but then I travelled across Canada for work, eventually settling down in Quebec. When I took my SO home to the maritimes, she noted that I suddenly started talking completely different and with a heavy accent, which I didn’t even realize I was doing. On top of this, my family remarked that I’ve started to take on a Québécois French accent from living here so long.

Every time I watch one of your videos I'm blown away all over again. It kinda freaks me out that you are so obviously just, I don't even know of words that describe what you so obviously are. Astute. Check. Insightful. Check. Perceptive. Effortlessly analytical. Unerringly accurate. You seem to have a mind equipped with radar, or sonar, or infrared. Some faculty of noticing things invisible to the rest of us. Things that, after having been pointed out by you, are, well, undeniably true. Perspicacious. Shrewd. A keen observer of life. And so well able to articulate precisely what you mean. There was a guy in my class in high school like that. I don't remember his name. I don't understand why you aren't a mathematician or a physicist or a rocket scientist. It's true, though, that I know nothing whatsoever about you aside from your "let's watch this together" videos on KZbin. For all I know, you could be on the verge of discovering a cure for cancer. Except even though you might think of yourself as a bit of a nerd, you are far too socially adept. There is a streak a mile wide of aesthetic canniness. Exceptional discernment and judgment. A streak of cool a mile wide. I can see you playing trumpet like Miles Davis. Or making art like Frida Kahlo. Except of course you'd never be painting like Frida or blowin like Miles, because you'd never be doing any thing like someone else. You are wholly original. The genius is the one most like herself. I abhor that word, that "G" word. I'm sorry. I have expectations formed from years of lived experience and reading. And some traveling. When I was younger, a series of ads for the United Negro College Fund ran with the words "A mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste." As a child in gradeschool, I enjoyed the privilege for some time of being considered somewhat average. I didn't say much. Until by some fluke, I accidentally scored off the chart on some test. Then everyone was convinced I was a massive underachiever, and they sent me to spend time every week with a counselor. Your No Protocol channel strikes me -- on the surface, at least -- as possibly the most appalling underutilization of an enormous engine of intellect. It's so passive! Life is not a spectator sport. If grades were handed out for living, "class participation" would be a big part of our grade, no? I buy two quadruple shots of espresso each morning. I probably had too much caffeine. Sorry, sorry. But isn't there some truth to this? Do you have another channel I don't know about? What are your plans, what would you like to do when you grow up? Sorry again. It bothers me when people go on and on as though they've already made up their mind about the world, as though you aren't even there. But see, that's part of what I find so infuriating. It's that you so obviously know so much and there is so much I want to ask you about, but this is inherently a passive medium. I was told in school that the brain is more active while eating a hot dog than while watching TV. Thank you for patiently indulging my rant. And thank you for letting the rest of the world play at being a fly on your wall while you watch and think and talk about things. Love the way your mind works. May you surf oceans of blessings.

The accent spoken in Newfoundland and Labrador is known as Newfoundland English, and it has a distinct mix of Irish, English, and West Country dialects.

Several claims have been made for Amerike by popular writers of the late twentieth century. One was that he was the major funder of the voyage of exploration launched from Bristol by the Venetian John Cabot in 1497, and that Amerike was the owner of Cabot's ship, the Matthew. Do people from Brazil introduce themselves by saying, "Hi, I'm from America."? Do people from Germany introduce themselves by saying, "Hi, I'm from Europe."? It is obvious that they do not, so why does anyone care that people from the United States of America introduce themselves by using the short version of their country's name? Nobody is confused about what country they are from when they say, 'America.' And nobody believes that Americans are saying that people from San Salvidor are not Americans. It should be obvious that many, many, words have multiple meanings, and 'America' is one of them.
@CaptainAmerica00110 ай бұрын
The confusion is *how* people confuse the USA 🇺🇲 for a continent. Does it resemble one? Do you consider yourself a person of logic, common sense, intelligence, critical & rational thinking, etc.? 'America', in the official name of the United States of America, has represented a continent for the past 247yrs, even 269yrs before the USA 🇺🇲 existed. The Continent of America has not changed name in 516yrs. The United States of America USA 🇺🇲 has not changed its name. By saying that "America" is a country because it's the short version of USA🇺🇲, then your logic has to apply to the Republic of South Africa 🇿🇦 or the Central African Republic 🇨🇫. If we easily, lazily, ignorantly, etc., do the same to the RSA🇿🇦 or the CAR🇨🇫 by reducing the names to denote a location or a demonym, then Africa is a country & African is a citizenship. Same exact logic! There's a continent named America. There's no country named America.

In conclusion, America is not a country or a nation. Therefore, 'American' is not a nationality or a citizenship, officially. Anyone who uses these 2 terms as such is due to ignorance, conceitedness, laziness, stubbornness, indoctrination, and/or arrogance! Furthermore, an American is from the Continent of America.

Hi! There are 2 points of view about Earth's land masses: the geophysical and the geopolitical ones. America is a continent in both views; you can divide it in North and South, geophysically, and North, Central, South and Caribbean islands, geopolitically. Antarctica is a continent in both views. Africa, Asia and Europe are 1 continent geophysically and 3 continents geopolitically. Australia is 1 continent geophysically and geopolitically it's Oceania (Including Australia, New Zealand and all the Pacific islands not part of Asia).

It’s not just that there are other Americas, but that there are other countries in North America. Canadians often share a similar sentiment. We often refer to the people as Americans (mostly because anything else is cumbersome), but I generally only hear Canadians refer to the US as America in a disparaging way. Edit: I have a bad habit of not waiting for the end of the video before commenting 🤦♂️

If you want to complicate the question of how many continents there are you could always wrangle a geologist into the conversation. I have vague recollections of semantic arguments about using tectonic plates to define continents which can get into the weeds over multi-plate continents and submerged or partially submerged tectonic plates.
@pparr05297111 ай бұрын
Continent can either be land mass or tectonic plate. For land mass there is Eurasia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, North America and South America. If we go by tectonic plates you have to add Zealandia and a bunch more.

@@CaptainAmerica001 North America and South America are continents. There is nowhere simply called America. The United States of America is only a country and refers to only a portion of the landmass named "the Americas" as it was by European explorers/colonialists. The Americas included every modern country from Canada to Chile. Continental landmasses are determined by continental plates, large areas of land grouped together by geographical location or divided by large bodies of water or mountain ranges.

6:58 It is not offcial yet but most likely the accurate number after the discovery of Zealandia, an almost entirely submerged land mass east of Australia. New Zealand, New Caldeonia and a few small islands in between are the only parts of the land mass that rise above sea level, is 8. The final classification of Zealandia hasn't happened yet and there are arguments both for and against classifying it as a continent, but as of now the majority of scientists seem to favour the classification as continent which would mean that Eath has 8 continents (Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Australia and Zealandia - from largest to smallest). It should be mentioned that the number of continents has varied over time as continents collide to form supercontinents (Pangaea was the latest one) that break apart again after a while.

If you define a continent by shelf and you count partly submerged continents, there will be 9: North America, South America, Antarctica, Africa, Madagascar, Eurasia with 2 Subcontinents (India and Europe), Austronesia, Zealandia and Kerguelen. Oceania is a region because of the lack of shelf. As well the remaining island belong either to micro continents or are attached the one of the previous named continents.

That’s surprising. When I lived in Portugal a guy used to run up to me in the street shouting, “Norte-americano, norte-americano!” It irritated the hell out of me, but he wasn’t playing with a full deck of cards, so... What can you do? I guess I just assumed the Portuguese counted the Americans as two separate continents.

That's pretty common. We try to not use the term Americano to call the people from the USA because we know that America/Americas is the continent. Yes, we know that there are other countries in North America; but this others have proper names, and calling people estadounidense is a mouthful.

So we have Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, North America, South America. Although I can understand why other people might consider Eurasia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, America

John in Scotland is Iain. Ian or Iain is a name of Scottish Gaelic origin, which is derived from the Hebrew given name יוֹחָנָן (Yohanan, Yôḥānān) and corresponds to the English name John. The spelling Ian is an Anglicization of the Scottish Gaelic forename Iain. This name is a popular name in Scotland, where it originated, as well as in other English-speaking countries. Wikipedia.

The way I studied them, the continents are Europe, Asia, Africa, North America (including Central America), South America, Australia-Oceania, Antarctica. If you're really picky you could technically split Central America from the rest as well as Oceania and Australia. I've also heard the words Afro-Asian and Eurasian for language families. Given that the Suez canal is artificial and he division between Asia and Europe is very relative, I suppose the Old World could be considered one continent, the Americas or the New World another one, Antarctica obviously and I suppose Australia and Oceania could be separate entities. That would make 5.

Coming from Indiana, we kind of have a partial southern twang to a flat dull accent. So it would vary depending on our mood how we spoke to one another, and the fact we have been lied to all this time on that we are not actually in "AMERICA" but something other named than that? So, "VINLAND?" Interesting video non-the-less.

I went to school in the 1960s (yes, I'm old) in the U.S., specifically NYC. We were taught there were seven continents. I questioned this, saying that Europe and Asia were one landmass and should be counted as one. My teacher calmly explained that I should shut up. Glad I didn't point out that Eurasia and Africa are also connected as are North and South America therefore reducing the count to four.
@PiousMoltar11 ай бұрын
Just because they're connected by a tiny piece of land doesn't make it one continent. Africa is clearly its own continent separate from Eurasia and North and South America are also clearly their own continents.

Saludos!
