I can't imagine going thru life with my child missing. My cousin was murdered in Oct 1977 and we still have no answers. We thought we recently had dna but was told it wasn't viable. Your family should contact the DNA company in Texas that Ana mentioned earlier in this episode. The CEO has been on Ana’s show and he seems like a wonderful, knowledgeable, and compassionate person. His company is finding people every week and they can extract DNA evidence when no other companies will take on the case. I was living on 5th Street in DelHaven and was on the scene responding to observe the fire because I and a partner had built a house in the area across the street from the Heimbaughs. I am a retired police officer and a former detective. I am a friend of Jody Heimbaugh who is Mark's father. Jody saw me there and came over to where I was standing and told me that his son Mark had disappeared. We talked for a few minutes and I told him to call the police right away but to search the house and surrounding properties. I had found in most of my experience after several missing persons calls that a child is usually lying down somewhere and may have fallen asleep. Once my own son climbed under a bunch of just washed but not sorted clothes. MY wife had gone into a panic because she couldn't find him. I was on duty and rushed home and started a search through the house and I almost skipped the bed, but my son moved and I noticed. Another time three guys were playing cards on an old army blanketed table. The blanket was draped over the small table. The owner's son had crawled and snuck under the table to be near the men and listen to them "shoot the bull". He fell asleep. After all the neighborhood was alerted and a search of the neighborhood had begun the father finally called the police. I was on patrol at the time and answered the call. By that time the neighborhood had been alerted. This was in the 1950s. Anyway, I responded and upon entering the house to speak with the distraught mother and get a description, I noticed the table with cards and chips still on it. As I looked I saw something sticking out from the blanket. There was the kid, sound asleep. Another time a kid climbed into a Rabbit hutch and fell asleep with the family pet. Nobody thought to look there. Anyway, Jodi and I talked about the searches and activities that were taking place. A few days later, after activity that had taken place by then, I told him that Mark was probably kidnapped by a sex pervert. That was hard for him to take. I didn't tell Maureen because I didn't want to upset her more than she already was. I stayed in close communication with Jodi. He was very distraught over Marks's disappearance. Heat-seeking helicopters had flown over the area. I was friends with Jack Trombetta who was an officer on the Middle Township Police Department at the time. I attended bible studies at his home. We discussed the case but he told me that there was not much evidence to go on. Jody would ask me if I had heard anything from Jack. I moved to Alaska in January of 1955. I don't know if Maureen remembers me and talking to me about Mark. I had been to the Heimbaugh home several times. I called Jody a couple of times from Alaska. But then we lost contact. I remember that Jody was in a Barbershop Quartet. At 53:57 on this video, the retired detective mentions the loose connection between a relative of one of the quartet's members was loosely connected to people who live an alternate lifestyle. If I were on the case I would have focused harder to match these people with Mark. I had stopped praying and I am ashamed for that. I have returned to pray again for Jody and Maureen. Please forgive me Maureen, and thanks to those who participated in this video. I'm sorry but I don't know if I ever met the detective. George Siter

I also was a student at Marks school. We were on the same bus route. He invariably sat near the front of the bus by the window with a friend who I thought was his brother at first.. as they looked very much alike. I used to sit with them because they were always kind of quiet.. not rowdy like the kids at the back.. and I was extremely shy and withdrawn when I was 12.. and sadly.. I just can't remember anything more about him.. not even a conversation.. It's likely I was on the bus as he got off just outside his house that day.. that haunts me.. I can't remember when I first heard he was missing.. but I do remember the shock.. and people talking about it.. the posters everywhere.. his face was tattooed on my mind and heart.. I told everyone. I thought about him all the time and wondered where on earth he could be.. I can remember being with my neighbour.. looking for any kind of clue in a wooded area one time.. another futile effort.. but we didn't know.. it might not have been.. so we looked. Marks story sticks with me till this very day. My parents live a few blocks from Marks house and my mother is great friends with Marks mother, Maureen. I remember this vividly as a child and now I tell my children about Marks disappearance every single time I drive past the scene of the marsh fire on Bayshore Road. I couldn’t imagine the pain she goes through and I truly hope she finds the answers she is looking for. This was a well done podcast and hopefully it helps spread awareness. Ana ... first and foremost, thank you so much for doing this podcast to keep Mark's case in the publics eye after 30 years. Please know however, there is a father who loves and misses his son every single day just as much as his mother does. I know firsthand because I am Mark's aunt, I am Mark's fathers sister. I was there 2 days after Mark disappeared after flying in from Ohio. I searched for Mark, along with hundreds of people for a month. Media projects like this are very difficult to watch for obvious reasons but even harder to watch when it's shown there is only a mother distraught by this tragedy. I pray everyday for Maureen, my brother and Matthew for peace in their hearts until the truth be told. Today, I pray with everything I have, that both Mark's mother and father receive news soon of what happened to their son 30 years ago.

I hate to say this but my first thought when you mentioned the little girl was this was perhaps a way for someone to lure Mark to them. Think about it he comes across this little girl maybe she was crying and he went to help her find whomever she was with and he was kidnapped or trafficked.

Do you think maybe, just maybe, just a theory that since this area was such a small town, that the fire was intentionally set by a perp or perpetrators to distract emergency services(ex: police, EMS, fire, road blocks) so they could then use the little girl to lure a child to abduct, which happened to be Mark? 🤔 You're amazing at what you do Ana, & I can see how much you're affected by this case. Ana, I just finished the book, “Where is Mark”... I am so confused. The father??! Oh my God. Did the police ever interrogate him about these horrid allegations? Of other children or of his own son? And the connections there? I just listened to this whole video and it was not mentioned at all. That book really shook me to my core. I pray for this poor mom to have peace.Maureen’s trauma breaks my heart. I can’t even imagine the pain that she’s lived with with 30 years. And how about Mark’s friend, Robyn? Who is now a grown woman? Apparently in “Where is Mark”, she came forward and verified all the allegations about the father and the child ring that was involved? Have police not done anything about this? This is so shocking and horrifying. Those are pretty bold things to put in a book if they were not verified by a witness or someone involved to be true. This show was beyond compelling. This case broke my heart. Ana, I'm old enough to remember this story and you as a young reporter. Thank you for reminding me about this story. I was in the fire service for many years and I can't even explain to you how many incidents still haunt me. So many times I was unable to save someone and hold their hand as they left this world. Anna, could you look into an unsolved homicide from 1983? I was in high school at the time and I have never forgotten. Eric Shunk was a little boy from the Kensington area. He went out to run to the store to get a copybook. He never came home and the search began. He was found on the railroad tracks at about 2:30a.m. He was under some snow and he had been beaten so badly that originally they thought he was stabbed. There was blue and white nylon rope around his neck. I believe they had suspects but they were minors. Teens that hung out by the railroad. There had to be DNA. His father was also a Philadelphia Police officer. Please help.

A prostitute came out and said Butcavage showed him a video of him rapng mark and he confessed that it was the boy from jersey and that he was staying at a camp ground 2 miles from marks home.

I remember this case like it was yesterday. I live in South Jersey and it was all over the news. There was a case in NYC, of a missing boy, Etan Patz, who went missing in 1979. His perpetrator was captured and prosecuted almost 40 years later. This gives me hope that Mark’s kidnapper will be found.

I grew up in Cumberland county, NJ, just a few miles away from the bay, and this is one of those haunting memories I have as a child, I have never been able to shake. I can remember searching on our side of the Delaware bay for him, and as a preteen myself I was terrified. I'm now 47 and this story still creeps up into my memories.

As a mom, for me Maureen is living with the very worst situation a parent could ever experience. Despite the horror of the death of your child, not knowing where your child is for years on end and the constant pain of wondering if he/she safe and if he/she alive is FAR worse. She is an absolute marvel and an inspiration! However, the fact that the man from the Prosecuting Attorney’s office was unable to state when any evidence was last tested is concerning. To me, getting the evidence tested using the most recent advancements should be the primary goal and the idea that he is clueless about the status of testing seems irresponsible at best. Side Note: at 17:20, I felt like I recognized the guy man in the second sketch. I feel like he’s been involved in a more well-known case or he’s been the subject of another investigation. Hoping it will come to me!

This is slightly off topic but I want to point something out. This comment is for anyone familiar with the current case of Summer Wells, a 5 (now 6) year old girl who went missing from Hawkins County Tennessee on July 15th 2021. Many people have commented on the fact that just DAYS after she went missing her parents were referring to her using the PAST TENSE of verbs when they were speaking. Since then I've commented on other interviews I've seen (now including this one) of parents whose child has been missing much longer than Summer. These are parents whose child has been missing for DECADES in some cases. Yet...they still use the PRESENT TENSE when speaking about their child. Here again in this interview Maureen Himebaugh used the present tense when talking about her son who has been missing for THIRTY YEARS!!! If you start listening at about the 21:20 mark she ends a sentence where she describes his happy demeanor with "just the way he always IS". While anecdotal, this for me just reinforces how unusual Don & Candus' reactions are regarding their missing daughter. Even accounting for the fact that everybody handles stress & trauma differently, in my opinion their behavior is just very unusual.

Question number 2. The girl who helped lure Mark, I am sure she was not part of the city Mark was from because it was a small city. Was she also abducted or paid in drugs or cash to help lure mark? Was their other similar cases? I know Philadelphia was the closet major city to where Mark is from, was she perhaps lured from Philadelphia? Great podcast and keep up the great work!!

This is heartbreaking. I can't even begin to imagine! It's hard to believe that 30 yrs before today, a case was handled so neglectfully. We live in a very small rural area. There is a boy named Michael Vaughn (5yrs old) missing since July 27th from Fruitland, Idaho. No AMBER alert whatsoever. 4 months have gone by now & no leads, suspects, witnesses etc. This little boy was just outside, in front of his house.. other than locally, there's been no real publicity. I'm afraid we'll be doing the same thing 30 years from now with this child too.

Omg I knew I recognized you Anna! I grew up in South Jersey and would see you on our local news all the time. I don't remember this case as I was only about 12 years old at the time. But Del Haven isn't far from where I grew up, maybe 30 mins! This is so sad and I feel absolutely horrible for his Mother! I hope someone will come forward with some credible information. 🙏 I used to spend summers at King Nummy campground, which is extremely close to Del Haven. I still have the photos. But I would of been much younger in most of the pictures. Now I'm gonna have to look at them. I have several albums full of pics that I actually just got from my grandma over the summer. The more I see his photo in this episode, I feel like I do remember seeing his photo years ago!
