yes you can, Catholic and Orthodox, the oldest churches in the world believe in Purgatory, we can and should pray for those in this sort of limbo state between heaven and hell. Protestants do not believe because they followed a heretic called Luther who threw away 1500 years of christianity in the bin & 7 books out of the bible
