Sure you can: the blu ray edition gives the option of watching every episode with the remastered effects, or the original ones.

Although the new cg effects tried to compensate for the original barrier visually being something one could avoid by flying around it, they did not capture the sheer menace of the original. The waves of energy rippling across it made it look threatening and almost alive. The new graphics made it look like flat artwork on the viewscreen during the approach and almost like just a nebula as the ship entered it.

Same as those uniforms from the original pilot. They shuffled the uniforms, some props and some of the cast. They didn't broadcast the episodes in the same order they were filmed. That's why you see Mr. Leslie in episodes that were broadcast after he died in "Obsession"

Why would someone bother digitally enhancing this?

It was a necessary upgrade for the HD release. The live action footage was shot on 35mm film, which cleans up very well and provides a nice, HD image. The original effects footage, however, was shot on 16mm film, and simply cannot be made to look as good. Worse, the effects shots consist of several separately shot images optically matted together, with a further loss of resolution each time. The result: the blu ray release has fantastic looking live action scenes, that look great on modern HD televisions. The effects shots don't, and can't be made to. The _only_ way to give the show effects footage to match the quality of the live action was to redo it. They had to do the exact same thing with the TNG release, it's simply that with the TNG blu ray, the modern CGI was simply made to look exactly like the original effects, just sharper. They felt they really couldn't take that approach with TOS, because the original effects, thanks to lower budget, and less advanced technology in the '60s, just look too dated for that to work effectively. As it is, they've avoided altering the effects too much -- there was no effort to upgrade it to match the visual style of the TNG and later series, for example. They tried to make the effects the way the show's original FX artists would have, if they had access to modern technology. BTW, they'll probably never upgrade the effects of DS9 and Voyager, because they took a financial loss upgrading the effects for TNG -- in the world of streaming video, they essentially can't make their money back with blu ray or 4K disk sales. They'll never sell enough. But if you buy the blu ray of TOS, you are given the option of watching the show with the upgraded effects, or the original ones -- though you'll notice the poorer, grainier picture quality of the original effects in that HD format.

As a collectors special edition. The original effects are still on the blu ray and can be toggled through the disc's menu

@@Hibernicus1968they did a horrible job with the remastered effects. No one that worked on the original would say they tried to make it look like a cartoon. They should’ve done better. They didn’t even bother to match the shuttle with the live action.
