I’ve had that exact nightmare… along with where’s my reed? My music? My pants? The concert hall? Where’s everybody else? 😂

While I use only a single reed, it is good to hear from someone who has the same philosophy about reeds.

does anyone know why he seems to be using a wing joint from another instrument?

Jia Ao probably sounds better, quite a few players swap out parts, some as much as half the horn, some just the bell.

…more likely a custom-made new wing joint than it having come from another instrument. I reckon the original wing joint (which had a high-F key/hole and a D-D# trill key/hole) made the instrument unstable (instruments with a high-F hole are more of a hit-and-miss than those with only a high-E hole (but many high-F horns are great too!!)), so Mor Biron got himself a wing joint for his instrument with less unnecessary holes. Here he plays a high-F D-D#-trill joint: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4uueXqiedCsq9E Theo Plath also originally had a high-F + D-D#-trill wing joint, he had a new one made too. Compare old: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pojbdaimppapoLs with new four months later: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3nQgWSKo7tjbrc My prognosis is that the amount of bassoons with high-F will increase and increase until a certain point at which it'll decrease and one day most professional bassoons will "only" have a high-E, some will not even have that, but only have the E-F# trill on the wing joint, like Sergio Azzolini: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoOWZZKHqb15eKs

@@marydoob in case you weren't notified of my answer to Jia Ao… I thought you might have something to say regarding my wing-joint rambling

FoxFagottjunge sorry, I haven’t been on google or KZbin in a while, cool. I had no idea, I’m too old, I remember George Goslee from the Cleveland orchestra had a Hackel made of two different horns and stories of a few other players. Interesting about the high F hole, I’m not surprised that it could influence the horn, especially higher up on the horn, the wing would logically be the most sensitive. Thanks for sharing!

It depends on which one, he played several. If you ask about the last one he played it was the bassoon obbligato part from the alto/tenor aria from cantata Mein Gott wie Lang, ach Lange BWV155 by J.S. Bach
