In this video we look at the path of the cue ball after impact with an object ball, when playing with topspin. The video discusses the distinct difference between British eightball pool and other cue sports when it comes to topspin and how to work out the path of the cue ball.
The shots are carried out on a 7ft Supreme Winner English 8 ball table.

Very useful video, and educational to even experienced players. Great to see the geometry and impact effect of the smaller cue ball explained so clearly, thankyou

Another great video. There are loads of tutorials about American pool out there but not many channels about British pool, so your channel is very important to us. Keep the vids coming!

Cheers. Really good to hear that it's helping good players as well. I only started this to help beginners really as I'm no pro and struggled to find much when learning myself. We can all always improve though!

Another top video. Particularly useful to those of us recently coming to 8-ball Pool after playing snooker. However, I had to quickly dump the smaller spotted cue ball that came with the Aramith ProCup set after just a few frames and replace it with a 2-inch cue ball. I was getting amazing back spin action with the smaller cue ball and tbh didn't play enough to notice the different trajectory on top-spin shots. Just couldn't get control of it and didn't feel right. It was interesting to see snooker legend, Dennis Taylor getting whipped in the Taom Shootout - he really struggled with position and tactics - have a new found respect for the top Pool players! Also less hard on myself after just playing 6 months of 8-ball!

Thanks. It's obviously far more of a problem for players who move from one cue sport to another. If like myself you've only really played the one game then the smaller cue ball is just what you're used to. There's a big differences between all of the games and just because you excel at one doesn't necessarily mean you will at another (as Dennis Taylor proved! Although to be fair I don't think he took it too seriously and played with a very gung ho approach!). If you are going to play British 8 ball though I would recommend using the smaller cue ball because that's what you will have to use in any competitions or local leagues. It might seem odd but if you continue to use a 2 inch cue ball you won't be learning to adapt your game for the differences.

Do you agree with the likes of Gareth Potts who thinks we should change the cueball to match the object balls?

Yes absolutely! Steve Davis said that unless this happens the game will remain mickey mouse: web.archive.org/web/20070927064914/www.uk8ball.com/article.php?sid=604 I'm in the UK and this is always an issue as most pubs use these balls but i own a 9ball table at home. Playing with a smaller cb feels wrong. There's much less science but to play in leagues in the south there is little choice so unfortunately i choose not to. I just play for fun at home and the local 9ball hall. Really hope 9ball grows in the uk as it's played across the world with a massive following and support network. If not, at least perhaps Chinese8ball :)

I guess it depends on what you play? For players like Potts who play different variations of the game it must be tricky to keep adjusting from one to the other. Personally I only play the one format so doesn’t make any difference to me as that’s what I’m used to. There’s certainly merit in the argument but I guess it’s strongly governed by the need for the ball return system in pub tables.

Do you have any tips on how to generate good top spin? I always need to play shots fairly hard to generate any useful top spin

Hello we are having a arguement regarding foul break. if the on coming player decides on a rerack,breaks the rack and plays a legal shot but two balls do not cross the line is it a foul break? Black ball pool rules Warm regards from Zimbabwe
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I play World Rules so I'm not an expert on Blackball rules. However my understanding is that for a break to be legal EITHER a ball is potted OR at least two balls pass the center line of the table. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but if you are saying "what happens if you pot a ball but 2 balls do not cross the center line?", then the answer is that it is still a legal shot because of the ball pot, so it's not a foul break. Hope that helps?

Sorry, I didn’t watch after the SORRY.....no use of smaller cue ball in actual game. This video is a waste of time.

Sorry but that’s like me saying “I don’t play snooker, so snooker videos are a waste of time”. If you don’t play British pool then that’s absolutely fine, but don’t be ignorant to it’s existence and the players this is important to.
