Where should you fasten your men himo?

Should you tie the men chichikawa at the fourth or fifth metal bar from the bottom up?

Great question! Our craftsman recommends the 4th bar from the bottom :)

I prefer the fifth bar because I find it easier to line the knot at the back of my head to the men monomi.

When I tighten my men, no matter how hard I tighten it, it always loosens up after about a minute or two. Do you know how to counter that?

If your men-himo are new you could try soaking them in water for an hour and then stretching them out. This helps to soften the threads thus give you a bit more tension when you tie the bow. Other than this, the best trick is to pull the part of the loop (of the bow) that "doesn't pull". For example, you will have two loose ends and two loops in your bow at the back of your head. Once you make sure that all of these are equal in length, pull on the loops - specifically, the part that is not connected to the loose ends. This will tighten the knot very effectively. As always, though, it is good practice to ask a fellow club-mate to check how you look from the back, your men and dou knots, your keikogi, and to pick up on "tenugui tails"!
