It is almost always obvious that bees are in a structure by the constant comings and goings of the field bees in search of food near the entrance of the hive. However, what is not so obvious is the location of the hive itself. This video is about one such hive. For weeks I had seen 4 or 5 bees flying from the same spot that I had removed 3 swarms from. I just assumed they were new scout bees, or bees that had gotten left behind. Every time I checked the location, there was nothing to indicate there was a hive present, just some wayward, lost bees........wrong. I finally removed part of the siding from the house and saw the comb. It was not much comb, and I assumed it was just the beginning of the hive....wrong again. Not to give away the whole content of the video, and as Paul Harvey used to say, " and now, the rest of the story." God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

To all who keep bees and to those who produce honey for commercial grocery stores I wish to thank each and every one of you for what you do. The bees that keep my flowers pollinated are some of my best friends. This year we have had more bees in our yards than anytime since we moved to this house in 8 summer seasons. We had many more vegetables in a smaller amount of time. Also to you that make these videos I have a greater understanding of how they act and that they aren't going to sting me unless I make them. I still won't go near a hive though.

I have been saving bees from being destroyed now for over 6 years, and we have over 60 hives at the abbey, most of which have been gotten by this method. It is so nice to see such a healthy hive and remove it safely and then reestablish it. I love doing the work I do and enjoy sharing the experience because I want to shine a bit of light on the importance of the lowly honey bees, and how vital they are to our very survival. That's why I work so hard trying to save bees from being destroyed needlessly. Thanks for watching, and I hope you continue to watch and comment on my bee wrangling adventures. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Another great vid. Thanks! What do you recommend homeowners do after you are finished to prevent bees from re-entering? Spray with some sort of Bee Go stuff? Fill cavity with insulation top to bottom and front to back? Plug entrance holes, but that appears to be a problem in that house!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
All what you suggest I recommend homeowners to do, but even if they do it, there is no guarantee the bees will not show up sooner or later. I have known a 10 year lapse and the bees returned to the same spot. As far as this house goes, it's a lost cause. I will be removing bees from this house till the day I die, or they burn the place down........lucky me. Great to hear from you Dave, I hope all is well for you. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Very nice video Mr. Ed, I really enjoyed watching you cut out that beautiful hive. I guess things will be slowing down since it's getting closer to seasons end. Do the bees stay active all year in your neck of the woods or do they pretty much have to stop for warmer weather? Anyway, it has been good seeing you again and keep on wrangling. Rick
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
I do not like removing hives in July, August, or September, mainly because of the lack of a nectar flow and also the presence of the SHB. I start up again in October and continue through December as our winters are very mild. January and February are off months, and March, April, May, and June, are the busiest as the swarm season is in full swing. You got to love the life of a bee wrangler. God's peace Rick. Mr. Ed

I am allergic also Carolyn. But I have bees, and when I get too many stings I shoot up with a hypo with atropine, just take it with me. I am not afraid to get stung, the more I do, the less my arthritis hurts, and the less my hands swell up. A sting on my face looks humorous, like out of a comedy. I love bees.

Another great video, Mr Ed! One reference you made though, I didn't get. What's "the bucket trick"?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
Congratulations Iceman, you get the "Paying Attention Award" on this video.You are the first to make mention of the Bucket Trick, and therefore receive this prestigious award. Of course, there is nothing tangible that you get. However, if you take a picture of my reply, blow it up, and copy it, you could hang it in your trophy case along with the many other awards you have gotten over the years. Alright, so here it is, now this is the main part of the trick and it's VERY important, you need to get a WHITE bucket ( a small garbage pail works just as well ). Next, grab yourself a BIG handful of clustered bees, and then dump them into the bottom of your bucket. The contrast of the bees against the bottom of the bucket allows you to find the queen very easily....that is if she was in the handful of bees you dumped. I hope you can use this trick on all your bee adventures. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Hi Mr. Ed! Thanks for sharing, you make it look so easy! I have a question, do you extract honey from these hives? I'm kind of assuming all of the honey and honeycomb stays with the bees on their journey for a reason but I don't know much. My grandmother has had a hive in her wall for a few years now and she hasn't gotten it removed because she's stubborn and no one has been able to explain well enough to her why they won't give her the honey - but I understand and only want what's best for the bees! ( and I don't think my grandparents bedroom wall is what's best hah!) but I'm curious what happens to a hive like this in the months after its move?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
First Allison, thank you for subbing to my channel, you honor me with that gift. Honey is processed from removals like this one, and like the one that is in your grandmothers wall. The comb is removed, and the honey is pressed from the comb, or simply by opening the cells and letting the honey drain out. I can't speak for other folks, but if the homeowner wants some of the honey or even all of the honey from the hive I remove from their home, I'm happy to give it to them. After the hive is removed, I relocate it to one of the bee yards from the abbey. This particular hive is doing very well, and I have already added another box to it due to it's growth. Keeping bees is very rewarding and I recommend the hobby to everyone. Even if you don't want to keep bees yourself, join a bee club in your area and learn about it. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

The best way to combat the SHB is to have a colony that is strong enough to keep them in check themselves. I can not stand those critters and go out of my way to squish them whenever possible. I know I have lost 4 or 5 hives this year alone to them. Thanks for watching Steve. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
That is a really cool knife. It is a 16 inch, Christmas tree limb trimmer that I bought last year. The serrated edge cuts through wax so nicely, and the length of the knife allows me to go far into a cavity cutting comb. I love that knife. I'm sorry I did not get the queen capture on video, it was a difficult catch, but an impossible on to get on video since my body blocked the entire capture. Oh well, there will be other occasions, I hope, to get it on video. Always great to hear from you Mick. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Congratulations on another successful hive and queen capture! Is there anything you can do after removal to stop another swarm from smelling the old comb and re-colonizing the joists? Should you use an iron and paper towels to melt and soak up the remnants of the comb, or spray down the old hive cavity with alcohol or soapy water or something like that to break up the scent?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, there is nothing that will permanently cover the presence of a colony that has been removed. There are many things that someone can do that will impede the return of a new hive, but I have known bees to return to the same location after a vacancy of 10 years. The way I view it is that when the new bees arrive, I will remove them. Thanks for watching, and I hope you continue to check out my channel. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I noticed that while you were taking out the combs. That queen is one heck of a layer! I'd say she's worth breeding more queens from. One question: any idea why the bees chose to sart building in the next section, instead of building further inward? Thanks again for a beautiful video.

Not only is she a layer, but she is a black queen. I don't see to many of them, and the ones I have seen are great layers. I have my fingers crossed on this one. How does the owner replace the board to prevent the bees from returning to the same spot? Am curious.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
Before the boards were replaced, the entire cavity was filled with insulation. Then, the boards were put up and the entire area around where the bees were was calked and sealed. Though this method does help prevent the return of more bees, it is not guaranteed. Bees love going back into spaces where previous bees have occupied. Great question. Nice wrangling Mr. Ed!! Question, what types of comb are there around 7:19 where the top 1/3 part is capped with whitish looking stuff compared to not being capped on the lower 2/3 of the section piece?
@diygardener4556
@diygardener4556 6 жыл бұрын
maris5951 - If I may answer, the top 1/3 of capped whitish looking stuff is honey, and the comb below was all brood comb. What part of the hive, the comb comes from, and the season, typically allocates use of the comb. The bees typically try to keep food resources like honey and pollen around the brood. Maybe Mr. Ed has a better answer.

DIY Gardener and the brood are the baby eggs right? This time of year they would be workers?? Thanks!!
@diygardener4556
@diygardener4556 6 жыл бұрын
maris5951 - Brood is everything from eggs to larva to capped brood. The time frame you were asking about showed mostly comb with capped brood below the white capped honey stores. This time of year though brood production is slowing down, and sometimes they will start filling in open brood cells with pollen and other stores like honey, and or bee bread.

Hello Mr Ed my grandchildren find your videos extremely entertaining although I get hit with all of the questions the main question they have is Do the bees get hurt when they go into the vacuum and do you eat all the honey or do you share it with you friends ?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for showing your grandchildren my bee wrangling adventures, I am more than happy to share my experience of bee keeping with the world to showcase the necessity of bees and why it's important to save them. To answer the main question, the bee vac does not harm bees. It is specially designed so that it has a very low suction and the bees are fine. As far as the honey goes, most of the honey is given away, and I keep a bunch for myself as I really like to eat it. I hope this helps their questions, and please, if they have more, let me know, I'm happy to answer. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
