While most folks living in Southeast Louisiana are enjoying the many different colors of the flowers that are blooming all around us, all I'm thinking about is the early nectar flow and swarms of bees.
Earlier this week I got a frantic call from a homeowner in Slidell, Louisiana saying there were bees flying all over her back door. She said there were so many that they could not even open the door or let the dog out of the back door. The next day, she sent me pictures of bees all over the soffit on the back of her home, they had moved in.
Removing a swarm of bees that have newly taken up residence is not as difficult as removing an established hive. Now, I had worked on a removal most of the day on Saturday and did not get to Slidell till almost 4 in the afternoon, but I felt confident I could get the job done before the sun went down. Well, I almost made it. By the time I had removed the bees and gotten back to the abbey to release them, it was way past dark thirty, and I had to use the lights on the truck to get things set up.
Despite setting up the hive and releasing the bees in the dark, things turned out very well. I returned on Sunday to finish the job, and that went just as smooth. So, get ready to watch another swarm capture as my swarm count continues to grow and leave the Dirt Rooster further behind me in our swarm capture challenge. God's peace to all.
Mr. Ed

Steve's Bees Hi Jeff, I enjoyed your video. I am a bee keeper in Idaho and we talked a while back. I copied your robo vac and used it a lot this Summer doing three cut outs and caught 13 in swarm attracter boxes. I ended up with 13 nice hives from my wrangling. I learned a lot from you, yappy, dirt roster and JP. I am building frames and boxes in my garage during this cold winter, we had 8 above last week and am looking forward to swarm season. By Gods goodness, and grace I hope to wrangle nearly as many bees as you and Dirt Rooster. Another friend in Jesus, Steve

There was a bit of an accident when I unloaded the bees, another reason for not working in the dark. The vac box got opened up and closed in about .005 seconds, but a bunch of bees did get squished. That was the low point of the capture. You have good eyes. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I was overcome with emotion watching enraptured at your loving labors! By the grace of God, you got the queen! Because you involve the Trinity in all the aspects of the bee wrangling that you do, it is NEVER “just a job,” it is sacred work, and I know that God is love, and you doGod’s work, and by praising Jesus, all that you do works together for your good, our good, and all is good! Helping to fulfill some of the purposes under heaven-the flower’s welfare, both plant and tree, flowers 💐 beautiful to smell and behold, and for the flowers of the various fruit bearing trees and vines, and shrubs...the wonderful rippling effects are miraculous! There is purpose in it all! I said a prayer that the nails sticking out of the wood you crowbarred wouldn’t hurt you! As I heard the rooster and hens, I wondered whether the dead and flattened 🐝 bees could be eaten by your flock...and it also brought to mind your friendly rivalry with the rooster fella...thank you once again for sharing with us your beautiful bees! I love watching you work! It fills me with such reverence, peace, and joy! Sometimes, like now, I find my self crying for emotions that are so hard to put into words, but I praise Jesus for this period of worship and fellowship I am experiencing! And knowing that He is in all and through all permeating and resonating in all, and nature revealing His glory! Darn! I got a cell phone call, which I found jarring me out of holy revery... Thank you again, and I know you are mightily blessed!

carolyn: I feel exactly the same way. I am an older man, and I can love on my bees, and try to take care of them the best I can. I am near 48 degrees latitude, so much further north than mr ed. But he has more wax moths and hive beetles, because of the cold at my location, we still have them too. My bees start flying at 50 degrees, and his might experience a cold weather bout at that temp, but mine are really going at 60 degrees.

I see where u live there is plenty of hives to recover. In areas as where I live there is very few hives to recover. So an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One tip to help beekeeper's swarms from immediately leaving bee yard is to take very old comb, ( the older the better) melt it down and soak a cloth in dirty comb. Tie a line onto it and toss over a tree limb and allow to hang in tree near apiary. The swarm that is departing will very likely temporarily light on the cloth. To send out the scout bees. Simple lower cloth, swarm and all into hive body. Hope this helps someone.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
That is a very good idea, and well worth trying. Thank you for sharing that, I'm sure many folks will do it. What part of the world are you in and how many hives do you have? Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I life in eastern Ky strickly hobby beekeeping interested in bee behavior. Been laid up for 7 months. not allowed to walk more than to bathroom or Doctor. Done a ton of research. I have a viable theory on how to correct a worker bee drone layer hive. combining two peoples work who have been successful in requeening a drone layer hive. And also using the double screen board you made. I also have info I gathered from college universities professors who are studying bees. As well as beekeepers like Mike Palmer. I am interest in discussing a few different things I have found that I think are profitable. An example of a prominent find I have found is the bee vac you made, makes more sense than any other I have found. I agree that it may be more cumbersome, however when I, or if I make one I plan on using an 8 frame hive body. If you are interested, you can contact me at this email address which I will be closing in a few months NancyLGillum@gmail.com I don't want to clutter up my primary email address. With which I would email you back with if you chose to contact me. fellow beekeeper hgillum

Yes, there is only ONE queen per hive. Because you find bees fascinating I wanted to suggest to you to find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. Folks up north keep bees different from folks down south, food and climate have everything to do with it. Let me know how you progress goes. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I'm pretty sure this queen will be a very good layer judging from her size. One of the first things that ever attracted me to bees was seeing the comb they built. What is so amazing about it is that the bees will build their comb to conform to the space that they occupy. Though the form the hive greatly varies because of space limitations, the size of the individual cells is always consistent. Bees are truly amazing. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

There were quite a few bees that were squished around the edge of the bee vacuum, probably because the top was put on on top of them, without time for them to get out of the way... so that was kinda sad. But there were almost no bees dead inside the vacuum, and those bees probably weren't actually killed by the vacuum, they could've just been at the end of their life. You should specify that a bee vacuum is not at all like a home, or shop vacuum though, because I'd hate for someone to think they can just use a regular vacuum to vacuum bees, and then have them die. I am wondering about the newer comb. In this one you framed it up, but in other videos you said it was too soft to frame up, so how old does comb have to be to frame up? You said this comb was only 4 or 5 days old... or does it depend on the bees? Good video 👍
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, new comb can not be framed because it is so soft. However, it was not the case this time and I was able to use it. Remember, I want to give the bees as much of their work back to them. Yes, even the honey. Thanks for watching. God's peace MD. Mr. Ed

Is that screen you set the box on a queen excluder? I caught a swarm last week and hived them the same day. They absconded the next afternoon. I was thinking an excluder would have prevented that until she started laying.

Very little suction is used to vacuum the bees, otherwise, they will be killed going through the hose. It is one reason it takes so long to vacuum bees, you can't use much vacuum at all. VERY good question. Thanks for asking and watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

You get excited about the queen's?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 жыл бұрын
Because the queen is the only bee in the hive that lays eggs, her role is very important. No eggs, no new bees. No new bees, the colony dies. Of course the bees can produce a new queen should something happen to the old one, but only if there are eggs young enough in the comb for them to do that. Also, there is a 40 day delay from when a queen is made to when she starts laying, and this delay can be critical in the survivability of the hive. By capturing the old queen it insures no break in the continuation of egg laying, as well as lessens the stress the bees have incurred doing the removal. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come.
