Well, Ashely always played Fearne as a pathologically curious button pusher, but I assume at least Ashley as a player if not even Fearne as the character were well aware that Zathuda was the most likely person to ty and lure her out of camp with an animal messenger. Any friendly NPC with a bond specifically to Fearne would have either visited openly or sent a straightforward message to her. But Ashley did say in one of the recent four-sided dive episodes that she was curious about having a conversation with Zathuda. During the first encounter with Otohan on the moon where she offered to surrender herself, she actually considered just going with them, see what Zathuda wants and maybe have a little villain arc.

For Where the Red Fern Grows, I didn't cry until the last page and I saw how the sacrifice was honored (intentionally vague; no spoilers). But The Giver had me crying cold, hollow, bitter tears through the whole story. Side note: I was twenty-nine at the time.
