How stable is the US-China relationship, really? It felt like frosty relations might finally be thawing after a meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco last November. However, there’s still a lot of daylight and no trust between the two. On GZERO World, Ian Bremmer sits down with US Ambassador to China Nick Burns for a frank conversation about how US-China has changed since Biden took office, what the two countries agree on, and where they’re still miles apart.
“This is largely a competitive relationship,” Burns tells Bremmer. It’ll likely be a systemic rivalry well into the 2030s between the two largest economies in the world and the two strongest militaries in the world, so what happens here is very consequential.”
Burns doesn’t see a major shift in the status quo any time soon, with the US and China competing for military superiority, security in the Indo-Pacific, and trade and investment well into the next decade. But he also points to the $575 billion two-way trade relationship between the two countries, explaining why the US doesn’t favor a total decoupling of their economies. Later, Burns and Bremmer discuss challenges surrounding Taiwan, aggression in the South China Sea, Congress’s proposed TikTok ban, and the risk for American companies in the People’s Republic as Beijing continues to prioritize national security.
Dig Deeper: President Xi Jinping’s nationalist agenda is turning China inwards at a time when the country needs to open up and revive its flagging economy: • Ian Explains: Xi Jinpi...

Is fentanyl really an issue for China, or payback for the opium wars and part of their total war strategy?

Ian, can you at least push back a little bit so that there's some back and forth? This is rather disappointing to watch. If I wanna know the official US stance on China, i can just go watch, say, any news network in the state?

This video is about the strategy between the two countries straight from the US Ambassador's mouth. What was Ian supposed to start debating about with this guy? I guess you wanted to hear Ian propose a better plan or something?

“Simple interaction with a foreigner dangerous”. Really? What’s your source of information? Also, have you noticed the tension started to ramp up once the US “pivoted to Asia”. So who really is the instigator in all that tension? Is your American identity get in the way of clearing thinking? Ian??

I think we're probably reacting to the same comment from the guest. There's a certain variety of Liberal discourse in the USA that still describes American politics as the shining city on a hill China should aspire to. In fact, China now has a higher life expectancy than the USA... If we're looking for model countries on human rights, neither the USA nor China makes the list. If you're looking for model countries on loading up your population with historic amounts of debt and lying about it, they're on that list. The treatment of the poor, sick and elderly in the USA is not good at the moment. Respect for international law has been low amongst certain American administrations. I have some systemic solutions, but you don't get there conceptually until you recognize how optimistic this variety of Liberalism sounds in the current context. The historical analogies for America looks like pre-fall Soviet Union or late Victorian UK to me! It's that Terry Gilliam movie Brazil where all the bureaucrats have taken over.

US want to maintain his hegemonic position in all aspect, such GDP, Technology development, military development ,finance etc. When Japan's GDP rose to 75% of US GDP, then it force japanese yuan to devalue, US also suppress japan semiconductor development, likewise it also suppress the France Alstom development, as for Russia, US doesn't allowed their nuclear power bigger than them, since the collapse of Soviet Union, till today it try all means to sanction on Russia, and try to further weaken and make it collapse further. As for China, it is very jealous china as economic power leader for most of the nations, like BRI, BRICKS etc, and find ways and mead to instigate and threaten those participating nations to withdraw. basically, USA it just a trouble maker for the world, just imagine, it is how nice that if the world can have 10 to 15years peaceful time, without wars and conflict, but on US side can they survive and sustain its economy growth without having wars in 5 years periods? Just imagine, if there are no wars in all nations, what will be the political situations and environment in Europe, US, will US and NATO be able to sustain their military power in the next few years? The US always wants to instigate and create trouble between India and China, the same thing happens to those nations that participate in BRI and BRICKs. In my opinion, the US is the troublemaker for world peace.
