For PSLE students the admission to sec school is very direct. Must pass all subjects. U get to choose 6 schools after u receives ur result. 1 mth after results, u will get notification to the school of ur choice, provided ur child meet the cut off point of that school. Subject Based Banding (SBB) Then they will have orientation for parents and students. Most students will be introduce to SBB and its ur child choice if she/he wants to sign up or not. Eg : ur child score a B for maths and science and his/her aggregate is about 185 for PSLE, he/she will be in NA class. The school might recommended him/her to study Express maths and science while the rest of the subject is based on NA syllabus. Even if ur child didnt do well for PSLE but he/she still pass all subjects and admitted to NT, not all is lost. This SBB introduction will gives ur child a chance to take up SBB NA syllabus too. And on top of that if their average score is about 70% and above they will be laterally transfer from NT to NA and from NA to Express. And those without SBB at Sec One, as long as they did well in Maths, Science, Malay or English, they will be introduced to SBB too once promoted to SEC 2. And those NT students doing NA Maths or Science scoring above 70%, aside from being laterally transfer to NA, they will also be introduced to Express Maths/Science SBB up to the discretion of the school. Sec 2 is the turning point. U have to choose ur stream for sec 3. So they must know what stream they wanted to go to. Streaming exercise: Accounts/Home Economics/Technical etc. They also have a choice of Geography or History for Sec 3. On top of that, those NA students who scored well for Express Maths will be doing A Maths, those doing NA maths will be introduced to Express maths and so on. U can check with the school for more inform details. While chosing school different parents and kids choose differently. Its best to sit in with ur kids and asked them what they like for CCA, the avenue for school and what kind of ALP (Applied Learning Program) they wanted to learn while in school. For example, Aerospace only few school has this. Its not part of their subjects but part of learning process. As for some schools, they have sports and Health Science, Environmental Sciences and Sustainability..etc. all these will be in the PSLE Booklet. The school only teach the basic to prepare them for Poly life. As for poly its slightly different. O level not much different. As N level, many will opt for ITE and PFP at Poly. Not many will choose O level route. This is where the hardest decision need to be made. For those taking up PFP, they must have 100% passes for all subjects. Failing that means they will be kick out of Poly. No resitting for the module unlike O level students. Then they will have to vie for ITE spot too with the following year intake. I hope this will help.
