In a previous video I had a look at a Buick Encore, and we traced the issue down to a wire that was broke in the insulation right at the connector. GM only offered the female lead to repair the connector and states you have to replace the entire harness to get the male half. We all know that is not feasible. I get my repair parts from connector experts and wanted to share that with you in case you are in need someday.

Retired GM electrical harness Engineer here. The white colored piece you are referring to inside the bottom of the connector is called a TPA which stands for Terminal Placement Assurance. Connectors are designed so that when assembled incorrectly, they will not seat without excessive force. You were correct in removing it for the terminal replacement. If the terminal was not properly installed, the TPA would not have seated and the connector would not secure to its mating half.

Great reply! Let me ask you a question then. On the old GM harnesses where they used a resistive wire (nichrome wire) to drop the voltage to the coil, can you repair these wires? They have a splice built into them from the factory joining it to the copper wire going to the starter solenoid and the coil. Always wondered if that splice is repairable. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the info, Eric. My favorite connector supplier is my local junkyard. I rarely check out without at least a couple, and I almost always get them for free. When I lay them on the counter, the guys pretty much laugh at me and send me on my way. I like to think they appreciate the honesty of my not just stuffing the parts into my pockets. On a separate issue, it would be great if manufacturers standardized their connectors. I often find myself feeling a connector that's installed way out of sight and barely reachable, and trying to figure out if it needs to be squeezed, or pried, or twisted, or just pulled (or whatever) in order to disconnect it. Now that they've been building cars that have wires for over 100 years, maybe it's time for a consistent disconnect/reconnect mechanism.

They used to have a standard though, at least the Brits did, first with their Lucas bullet connectors and then the Lucar ‘spade terminals’ but as electrics evolved, eventually everyone had their own ideas about connectors. In our particular market a lot of the harnesses were locally made (as part of the CKD system) so we got a lot of variability.

I made a wheel sensor pigtail from them so I could plug the opposite wheel into harness and check if it is sensor of wire problem. Just spin wheel, and look at graph. I take a slightly different approach... Instead of attempting to 'restore' it all to OEM specs by loading in a new pin / socket into an existing connector, I install a stand alone plug & socket (typically a Deutsch DTM as I have these in stock) to carry any conductors that need repair. Obviously, this doesn't work too well at the very ENDS of the cable run (e.g. the final plug / socket connector on an ABS sensor) because if that sensor is ever replaced, you'd now have the wrong connector. However, for the BULK inline connectors (such as the one in this video), that primarily connect two separate wiring harnesses together, and neither harness is EVER likely to be replaced, then it's almost immaterial whether all the conductors are in a single plug / socket, or split across multiple. (Providing any such new plug / socket is similarly suited to the ambient conditions it lives in)

@@austinjames3525 there is something to be said about not wanting bad splice jobs in a harness, but that's a training issue, and a solid solder and repin is not only faster, but leads to less collateral damage or displacement of other components. I had a similar issue a little while back on trying to get terminated leads. I needed to run an extra wire into the front doors on my Ram but I didn't want a loose wire hanging out in the door jamb. So I went and looked up the door harness connectors and it only showed one side had terminated leads for ~$30 a 10 pack. But to get the other side it said it was serviced by buying a complete connector kit for ~$120. I didn't want to buy an entire connector kit just for a couple terminals. Would be cheaper to buy a used door harness to get the terminals over that kit. So I ended looking at other dash connectors and I found another connector that was the same type with the same pins and it actually listed the terminated leads for both sides. Ordered them and they worked perfectly. Don't know why it listed both male and female terminated leads for one connector and not the other.

Thank you for this video, I can source aircraft pins connectors but obviously they are useless for fixing cars. If anyone is ever in a pinch, needing heat shrink with sealant, you can place a sliver from a hot glue stick in your heat shrink and it'll do the same thing. The dirtier the glue stick color, the better. Avoid the clear/white, they don't have that 'stiction' you need.

I collect pinball and arcade machines. I have a small fortune tied up in crimpers, molex\amp plugs, and connector pins. So I totally understand why you wouldn't carry that stuff.

Wish this video came out a couple years ago. Had a broken wire for the harness clip for the brake peddle switch went to Chevy to buy a new terminal to depin it and make the repair but they didn’t even list the male end. Had to buy a new harness for it for $120. New harness came with all white wires and twice as thick wire so you could use the but connectors it came with. Factory wires were like 24 gauge and the new wires were like 14 or 16 gauge.

would a trip to wilberts have been an appropriate source for these connector needs???

gonna keep that link in my back pocket. my usual go-to is to just chop up a harness from a parts car. since i'm a 00s chrysler nut most of them use the same pins in various places.

I bought an SAE and a metric set of o-rings from Harbor Freight. Whenever I need an o-ring, it’s never one in either set. I get what you are saying about having the terminals in stock….

Mouser is pretty good for parts if you know the connector part number. And they sell a la carte. The only pain is the shipping.

I work at a Cat dealership. I love that 95% of our connectors are Deutsch, no matter what model. The only downside to Deutsch is the price of the crimping tool for closed barrel terminals.

The crimpers for Amp and Molex connectors can run over $1,500, and there are dozens of 'em.

Tell me about it. I worked in the Telecom industry, and at work I had 2 x AMP connecter kits, 1 x Amphenol connecter kit, and a Molex connector kit , and it was bloody expensive. (lucky it was work owned.

If you can get replacement pins that quick . Then no point in stocking loads .. But you have to order packs of ten . So then you have some spares 👍👍👍👍

They look like "molex" pins that are on a majority of machines I serviced when working at AC Delco. I still have the pin release tool and crimper in my vast array of tools working for GM 23 years.

No matter how much equipment or tools you have you never have what you need at the time I do HVAC so I know you can't have every little connector or the right type of replacement stuff when you come across it the good thing that crimp connection will outlast the whole car

The connector pin systems are getting so specialized and so specific it would be impossible to stock all the different pins and crimping tools. I work for a major electronic supplier to the auto industry. Working on a project for GM called global A BCM, GM specified a Molex connector system which was new, the crimping tool which was the only tool available which would make the crimp correctly cost $1500. We had one on loan from GM because you couldn’t buy it on the open market. I had to write the purchase order request for $25,000 for pins and seal and shells and locks, about 100 different part numbers to make the wire harnesses for all of the test fixtures, load boxes, etc. trying to stock all of those bits and pieces would be a complete waste unless it was all you do all day every day. It sounds like a good business model for a company.

You could have every crimp tool and terminal known to man (and machine) and the next model car that comes out will have all new ubique connectors. Like when you build a better mouse trap, they will build a better mouse.

Yeah those terminals with the double crimps need a special jaw. I've had luck with my rachet style crimper with one of the included jaws/dies. You have to crimp one at a time, so not ideal for larger jobs. I would have paid the extra dollar too.

I have been trying to find that blue torch you use for the heat shrink but can’t not find it. I didn’t see it on your store either. It looks easier to use than the average mini torch. Can you please review what it is or where to find it?
