If you’re wondering where to get book ideas from, where to get book inspiration, or how to use that inspiration for story writing, this is the video for you. If you want to write for children, you might wonder where an author gets their ideas from, how they think of a children’s book plot, or book character, I will tell you where I got all of my ideas from.
As an author/illustrator, I have more than 10 books published, and I’ll got through the current ones, telling you how I started them. If you’re pondering exactly how to write a children’s book, the first thing you need is finding your muse and getting an idea!

When my son was little (starting at about age 3), I would sometimes start a sentence, and then let him finish it with whatever word or expression came to him. He often came up with wonderful ideas. I suppose it worked so well for us because we were just playing. For example, I might say “Once upon a time, there were two happy....” Some of the stories and rhymes made up together were so fun, I’m now in the process of making picture books of them for his little boy, who is three now.

The idea of Wally and Bert explains why dogs always chase their tail. Watching this video gave me so many ideas for children's books lol

This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear! You explained exactly how my stories come to me. I can't explain it but it comes and I just write and write. Some days images come to me and I just quickly create thumbnails. Sometimes I just create thumbnails based on lyrics from a song that just interest me out of nowhere. It's weird. I was always on reddit or quora trying to find what this was called(this type of writing and illustration vivid stories were coming from lol) Anyway I am writing am thinking its best if i create series with my stories. Its something I can start out with when I self publish hehe Anyway I am just happy I found this videos :) Thank you and I look forward to learning more from you :) Kia Ora from NZ - Marie

Thank you very much for your videos, they're so calming and heartwarming, great content. I'm watching your videos from South Africa 🇿🇦. What do you normally do when you have ideas in just pictures but fail to write them down?

Hi Lerato, thank you for your lovely message. If I haven't written it down, I will either forget it (arg!) or I need to make a big effort to remember, using a sort of mind palace. So, if I was out, and had an idea about a dog losing his ball, I might imagine my front door and associate it with a dog, ie the dog sitting on the doorstep, and when I open the door, the ball is just inside my house. Then, with any luck, when I actually get home and put the key to the door, I will remember the dog and the ball, and then go and write it down. Hope that helps :)

I would like to write a kids story inspired by the show Fraggle Rock, i used to watch it as a kid. But I don’t know how to do that without seeming like I’m copying it😬 I just like the idea of there being a world with small creatures right next to ours☺️✨

Hi Jules.....hope you're ok....just watching your 'where to get book ideas from' ( yes, l still haven't put pen/pencil to paper!!!!! WHY,WHY,WHY????) and l wondered do you still self publish? Just a thought......l'm good at thinking, but that's not good enough is it.. Mmm.....must get on....

It’s 50/50 at the moment. If you can get a publishing contract, it can be easier in some respects, but self publishing gives you a huge learning opportunity.
