Back in 85 we were given a dream sheet for Duty Station after graduation, we could only choose East Coast, West Coast or Over Seas. Everyone that picked East Coast went to Cherry Point, everyone that picked West Coast went to 29 Palms and if you picked overseas you went to Camp Pendleton. What a pisser, I wanted Pendleton but was stuck in the Stumps. It turned out to be a decent Duty Station though, lots of great memories.

I would suggest you tell your recruiter you want a duty station option and be insistent. I was in Hawaii which has a large infantry, air wing and logistics command. I had a new Marine who insisted he had an East Coast option for a duty station. My Sergeant Major read his contract and the young grunt was correct. The Sergeant Major called the assignment Sergeant Major and told him to cut orders to the Second Marine Div at Lejeune for the Marine. Since he had only been in Hawaii a month the assignment guy pushed back. He picked the wrong Sergeant Major to lean on. Mine told him he had 24 hours to cut the orders or the issue went to his boss. The kid got orders to Lejeune like his contract promised.

In 1981, when I went through ITS (Infantry Training School), we were told, “If you graduate 1-3 in the class, we will let you pick your duty station.” Having been born in California and my wife being here, I busted my ass and graduated #1 out of my class. I asked for Camp Pendleton. I ended up in Camp Lejeune. When I went to the First Sergeant, he didn’t even listen to me. Told me to get the f*** out of his office. That was that.

The best duty assignment during my time was at base special services motor transport, headquarters company, regimental headquarters, 1st Marine Division. It was at 13 area. Our barracks and motor transportation vehicles were next to the Base Special Services headquarters. We were not issued any weapons and there were no formations. There were 5 or 6 of us there. One sergeant was the dispatcher and another sergeant was one of the drivers. We transported military personnel to various destinations on base. We would also take Marines and Marine dependents to places like Disneyland and knotts berry farm and even to dodger stadium to watch baseball games. My tour was almost over and I was encouraged to reenlist but like a dummy I decided to get out.

I had been injured twice in MCRD SD for 5 months so I was sick of class work I just wanted to be settled down. Depending if you are married or not. If you are single you will get put into barracks and have your own room (similar to dorms or motels) you will either have 1 or 2 roommates and from on there that's basically where you are staying and living at. If married you'll get a house with BHA (Basic House Allowance). Is there breaks or free time? Yes, it's literally like a 9-5 job. Liberty on weekends and etc etc. Granted you might work more hrs during week days depending on ur mos but overall you'll be working and getting weekends off. Am I stuck there the whole time?
