You had an episode on mini comics some time back... I'm actually doing a bit of research on what sort of paper I should use for my mini comics and where I can send my material off for printing that may have that right sort of paper that I am wanting. what would you say would be the most cost effective stock that closely matches the same stock used for actual comic books? Maybe you could do an episode about that?
@ScottSerkland4 жыл бұрын
Well there's not really a standard stock for comics, and what is most common also has to do with the time period for a long time comics used newsprint, then some started using Baxter paper. If your talking about mini comics They are mostly don on standard copy paper . A lot of modern comics use a glossy stock that I don't particularly car for. I wouldn't worry too much about what others are using and pick a paper that you feel is right for you and your comic.
@gamingchinchilla73234 жыл бұрын
@@ScottSerkland thanks for your input :) I have some old comics from the mid 90s and I find the paper stock they used back then to be rather attractive. Not so glossy on the pages, but thick enough and just right to show off the fine inking detail and digital coloring. and a semi glossy cover with heavier paper weight. According to a website I visited after posting my question to you the "accepted" paperweight and paper type for self published comics are matte 60 for interior pages and gloss 80 for the cover But as you've said here in your reply, paper stock really doesn't matter for self published mini comics. I think I'll experiment with the paper types and sees what works best with my template. Thanks again!

Serkworks Art labs, I tried to have Shutterfly print my digital art but they rejected it because of low resolution. How can I increase the resolution?
@ScottSerkland5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, if you start at a low resolution there really isn't a way to increase it. ( you can lower your resolution but you can't do the opposite.) 300 DPI and up is required for most printing. So need to start at 300 dpi and at the size you want to print when you first set up your file. I sometimes go larger just in case I decide later on I want to print something larger. The only exception to this rule is if you are doing vector art in a program like Adobe Illustrator, Vector art is all mathematical information and can be scaled up or down without any loss of quality.

Another question if you don't mind explaining how you actually get the original to be printed. Do you photograph a large piece and have it as a digital file compressed to send? I have a few 18 24 canvas paintings that I want printed off to actual size. Could you please explain how you figured this out?
@ScottSerkland6 жыл бұрын
Sure, so most of my work is either digital or 11" x17" original comic book art that I scan in on a large format printer. For what you are talking about you would have to photograph. Unfortunately I'm not very experienced with photographing artwork. you could attempt to do it yourself, I'm sure there are video online that will help with the kind of lighting and camera set up you need, or you may need to hire a professional photographer who specializes in shooting artwork.

Do you have a referral link for them?
@ScottSerkland7 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can find them at www.catprint.com/home

I mean I know artists in the past that get $10 off a future purchase with their referral link and the person being referred also gets a $10 discount on a future purchase.

Oh, sorry Maddy, I have a few other affiliate programs set up, but I haven’t looked into what programs Cat Print offers. Cat Print did reach out to me and offered me a very nice discount on my next order after they saw this video. I do appreciate you asking though. Thanks.

Whoa! How do you create something to be 3D?
@ScottSerkland4 жыл бұрын
I really need to do a video on it. the short answer is that you need to create a red and blue layer for every separate item you want to pop out or have depth. and you offset the red and blue layers at different intervals depending on how much you want the effect to stand out.

Hey who do you use for printing your comics? Im getting ready to print up my comic and I'm looking for a decent printer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@ScottSerkland7 жыл бұрын
Hey Theo, I use Ka-Blam for print on demand comic book printing they can do short print runs. another option would be Amazon Create Space especially for larger black and white comics, but it can get pricey for color comics.

i ordered from them and my prints were super dark and blurry :(
@ScottSerkland4 жыл бұрын
Really. I would contact them back. I'm sure they will correct the issue. I've used them many times and many of my friends have used them and been completely satisfied. The only time I had an issue was once when they forgot to cut some prints down to a custom size, but they corrected the issue without a problem

Good info and review of catprint, I still do the print shop thing for my 11x17 because its faster and cheaper, but and other sizes I have switched to catprint. Also, glad to see I'm not the only one who tried eating those foam things. :p
@ScottSerkland7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s a certainly a cheeper option, but I’m not sold on the quality of most print shop prints. It’s funny I was dog-sitting for my girlfriend and she loved to eat those packing peanuts ( the dog not my girlfriend)

My dad iwns a print shop that actually has not changed print prices much since the '80s
@ScottSerkland6 жыл бұрын
Wow, really? That's pretty amazing, hopefully hes still able to earn a decent living charging 80's prices. I know a lot of illustrators who are still billing for what Illustrators made in the 80's.

Are the prints archival?
@ScottSerkland6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. For me it wasn't a big deal to switch from the archival photo prints I was getting at Costco to Cat Print. because I sell most of my work at comic conventions, where a lot of people are selling cheap colored copies. So the Cat Print prints were much higher quality and people were more concerned with the prints looking good and the paper stock than being archival. I don't think I've ever been asked about the archivability of a print at a con. However if you're are selling higher quality prints of fine art or something I can see where that would be important.

Call me naive but, I was given that all inks used in Jet Printers are pigment not dyes thus are 100 year or more archive-able.

Hi there. So if I wanted to send a painting I painting from online...Costco can take that painting I send by email and print it for me. Also can you tell me what they charged you for lets say a dozen of your largest paintings and also what would they charge for lets say a dozen card size paintings and would they put the card size order on a nice card paper.
@ScottSerkland7 жыл бұрын
Hi Deb, I was a little unsure about what you where asking. Did you want to know what Costco charges for these services or what Cat Print charges? I know Cat print can do all of these things and they have an instant quote generator on their site. As far as Costco goes I think I pay around $4 for a 12 X 19 print and I don't think the price decreases at a dozen. I don't now if they do any printing an cardstock. They may send that stuff out because I believe all of their in store printing is on standard photo paper.

hey there...thanks for your prompted reply. I wanted to know for both.
