I have installed lots of multi-camera DVRs. Wiring is very different with each home. Most of the systems we install use the "Siamese" type cables. The plan is to have the DVR either in a closet, and wire through the attic, OR wire to the DVR in the basement. Your video is good for rookies. Cover all entry ways to your buildings.

That HikVision camera you have in your hand absolutely can be mounted on a wall and still adjust up and down, left and right. There is no need for a bracket. There are three axises you can adjust...rotate base...swivel camera...and rotate camera. This allows for flat mounting to roof OR wall.

Quick note... in fires people don't die from the flame, its the smoke that's the main killer. If you HAVE to run through HVAC, make sure you have an FT4 fire rated cable. Be safe.

Regarding #4, I like to ensure good face images. As a result I risk vandalism to some inexpensive bullet cameras by placing them in unusual locations (like attached to trees, in planters etc) where even if someone is wearing a hoodie or a hat I am still likely to get a good shot of their face. The trick is to make them blend in which works well with bullet cameras. The mount and size make them easier to overlook.

J. Bly ...HikVision dome cameras are tamper resistant. Also...make sure you have some cameras that are VERY visible...for deterrence. Hiding some lower to capture license plates or faces is great...but hiding your system does little for deterring crime. Also...make sure you put up signs and decals.

Tip: For large areas , decentralize your POE switch(s), 300' is a Maximum run to a camera, so move the switch closer. ALSO Put a UPS on that POE Switch and NVR (no need to put the monitor unless you need to actively view save run time), and don't forget the Router if you have off site monitoring

It's 2020 -- I installed wireless and I'm a fan. Purchased the wireless cameras and then hired a carpenter on the TaskRabbit app to install a few days later. They work perfectly.

Agreed, the wireless cameras are gaining popularity. Glad to hear it's working out for you!! Are you using battery operated or running power to the cameras? How many MP were you able to stream over WiFi?

@@HomeTechDIY The batteries have been working for 9-months without a hitch and are slotted to work for up to 2 years before they need to be replaced. I have Google Wifi which is superb. A lot of people run into Wireless Camera issues when they have poor Wi-Fi. So, that wasn't an issue for me either. I have day and night coverage so they record and view in 1080p HD video during the day and with infrared HD night vision after dark -- that's 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution (2.1 megapixels). I'll likely upgrade when they release a 4MP option. The app and real-time 2-way voice control were big selling points for me.

The main thing I did was to place 2 at every one of the major corners of my house. This way they protect each other as well. So basically if all cameras are covered in view of each other, It makes it harder for some one to try to disarm one or more without getting filmed. Just my opinion. J. Watson, Garage mess

We hear that domes are better for inside, and the famous turrets is what people are using now . I personaly like the DOMES outside but people are saying eventually they get moist inside and TUREts are tigther and imposible for water to get in. I like the ARMS and brackets for comercial . I use them all the time. makes the place looks professional and clean. What are your thoughts. ANd i keep dealing at night with that IR bounce back.

Hi. Best explanation video yet, so thank you for that. I bought a wired system that was rated #1, and it came with 10 cameras total. Eight bullets and and two domes. I’m wanting at least one camera inside my attached garage, and my pole barn this way if someone broke into either... I’d also see and have proof of what they stole. Now would you recommend a bullet camera inside each, or one dome in each of them???? My system came with the 10 cameras, but has the capacity of 16 channels and a 3 TB. ** Another issue I’m running into is, where I want and need to install them would mostly only be supported by soffits under hang overs. What would you recommend?? Please help and advise. I thumbs up, and now a new subscriber. Thank you.

How do you get power/single to the fence camera? Do you have a repeater?

The signal is able to run a very long distance and no repeater is required. The distance to the fence is about 120ft or 35 meters. I tested distances with a PoE switch here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXXUi6ZrgpmcatU

Let me add off the top of my head leave a good extra length of wire available "just in case" you need to move it at a different time of season for some unforeseen circumstances. Weather beating up the camera, angle of sun in winter vs summer etc...

Yes, extra wire is always good! I'm now wishing I added more wire drops in certain locations. The low December sun is now catching one camera for a couple of hours/day... It's too cold out to fix it now... maybe in the spring... lol

I'm not familiar with the Axis brand at this point, so it's hard to say. I do like both styles of camera, but it depends on where you are installing them. Have a look at my video on what type of security cameras should I buy. This may help answer your questions.

Good suggestions on the height but that will probably only be feasible for multiple story houses. What can one do if they own a single story home where the only points higher than 8 feet are on the ends which won't allow for the cross coverage like you're recommending.

Sounds like a sacrifice will need to be made somewhere. If you are not concerned with lower height you might have to install them there or double up on the cameras for the corners... I guess it comes down to risk, budget and NVR abilities.

Dave K yeah, I'm considering that. I actually have a flagpole in my front yard and was thinking a ptz camera might be a good option OR something with a wide field of view. This would need to be a high resolution camera due to the distance from any access point.

@@HomeTechDIY That was my situation also. I have a 16 channel Lorex system so over time I've added cameras to back-up each other, works very well. I have no blind spots and mix dome/bullet cameras to take advantage of their individual characteristics. One other advantage I have is neighbors with virtually the same system, so our security overlaps to the point of being invincible. Also, if you can afford it, install a PTZ camera, at an optimal location, so as to zoom in for better face/license plate recognition.

That's a tough one. Without running CAT6 wires down the side of your house or up and into the attic you're only options are to drill holes (which is mostly likely out of the question) or use battery operated, but you cannot stream and record continuously. Would placing the cameras on the eave and running wires into the attic and then finding a way to connect them to an NVR work?

Great info but I'm finding it hard how not to mount some of my cameras towards the sun as I live in a mid terrace property and the back faces south, so has some degree of sun all day which would mean I can't place a camera on the back of the property facing the garden or rear gate.

I've had the same issue but since the cameras aren't that expensive I placed them in direct sunlight anyways. After 4 years, only the dome has turned a little shade of yellow.

@@HomeTechDIY sorry I didn't mean about sun damage to the camera case I meant more regards under/over exposure due to bright sun on the lense, the two E1 zoom indoor cameras I have I've had to fiddle with the back-light and exposure settings due to dark picture quality due to the sun through the windows, do the 8mp 4k cameras have the same sort of adjustability to compensate for sunny conditions?

There are good mini domes out there. The HikVision line of domes are pretty small and have a good resilution for most uses.

Ideally, I like to place cameras out of the sun and somewhat protected, like under an eave. I have used that wall mount DS-1258ZJ and it should last outside for 7-10 years. It's plastic, so it will eventually get weak with the elements. I have cameras exposed to heavy rain, wind and snow and I have yet to experience any issues. Check out my video where I install a camera on a fence with no protection.

Great video! I am considering installing video cameras around my house. One challenge I have is my house is a rambler that sits on a slab foundation. It is low to the ground and all the points I would mount a camera are only 7 1/2 ft to 8 ft off the ground. This makes all my cameras vulnerable. Any suggestions? Thanks.

That's a tough one. There are only a few options that come to mind. Maybe install them in the higher spots from the ground (not around the stairs/doorstep where someone could reach them easier), plant a thorn bush under the camera to make it more difficult to access, install vandal resistant domes, install them into wood and not just the soffit (like I do), install cameras so the scenes overlap, use decoy/hidden cameras (like the trail cameras or the camera hidden in a fake rock). Hope this helps.

Yes, as long as the monitor plugs into your computer. If you are using an NVR, you'd have to check the specs on the device. Most use HDMI and VGA.

I have been using these cameras for 3 yrs. A month ago, the cameras stopped working when it was on a super hot day. It worked again when the temperature cooled at night. But now, the cameras stop working when it is just slightly warm. What happened?

It's hard to say... maybe a loose connection inside the camera or the network cable that's impacted with the wires expand and contact with the heat.

Thanks for checking out my video! I mount the cameras to the soffit without a bracket in most cases. My soffit area is about 1.5 feet wide. They might move a little in the wind storm (70mph) but it's been working out great for the past 8 years.

It could be the quality of the sensor, lens, and overall internal and external parts including the firmware or even the aftermarket support.
