The order I played through them was wacky. My first Metroid was Fusion, but I didn't get very far. To me, it wasn't the best game to start with to get me invested. I tried Super, but felt similarly about it for control reasons... and I didn't really understand the concept and the appeal of a Metroidvania. Tried several and never liked them. But for whatever reason, I really felt compelled to get into the series. I've always been a big Nintendo fan, and a big sci-fi fan. Maybe that's why. And... then I tried Zero Mission. And was hooked. Blazed through it, then blazed through Fusion. Savored my time through Super Metroid (which went from being my least favorite of those 3 to my absolute favorite). Tried Metroid II and didn't like it much, but then Samus Returns came out. So, I essentially played 1, 4, 3, and then 2. And I adore them all. (I have gained a much higher appreciation for the first 2 games as time has gone on.) The Metroidvania went from being a style I really didn't like, to my absolute favorite genre in gaming. So while I do agree with the majority that says Super Metroid is the best, I think Zero Mission is a very close second, and is better to start with if you want to get absolutely absorbed in the series.
@Buphido
@Buphido 3 жыл бұрын
The order I played then in was quite wacky as well. I only properly got into 2D platformers outside of Mario a few years ago with Yoshi‘s Woolly World. Around the time I had finished that game and was looking for more, Samus Returns came out and, having heard a lot about Metroid, I decided to give it a shot; and loved it. So then after I satiated my immediate craving for other Metroidvanias with games like Hollow Knight and Ori I decided to check out Super Metroid (which at that point was available for free on the Switch) and was surprised how well it had aged. So after this game I decided to give the original Metroid a shot and I got pretty far in it, but after taking a forced break for an extended period of time I had completely lost track of which places I had already explored and ended up dropping it. And then Dread was announced. I had always planned on someday playing the first and fourth games in the series, but this announcement gave me the drive to buy Zero Mission and Fusion on Wii U‘s Virtual Console (I don’t usually buy Retro games, I‘m stingy like that) and, having already gotten into the Series, I decided to play them in chronological order. So, my order of playing them was 2, 3, 1, 4. But I would definitely recommend starting with Super Metroid as, if you own a Switch, you practically already own that game and it’s age does not make it fall back behind the newer entries in the slightest.

Something I always do with franchises is look at the chronological order, order of release, and see which games are easily accessible. The easiest to do is just look at which games are easily accessible and try to watch longplays until you get to the point of the game you can play at that moment. I always try to mix it up between these three options.

The best console to get started with Metroid is to get a Wii U. It's got Zero Mission, the best place to start, Super Metroid, Prime Trilogy, and Fusion. It can also run Other M if you hate yourself. Though if you actually want to play the games on a console that didn't completely flop, Nintendo would _murder_ me if I told you "It's perfectly okay to emulate them, go right ahead. Emulation is completely morally correct in this instance because Nintendo isn't offering any way to play these games on their latest hardware. Also Prime Trilogy has this emulator that's specifically tuned to be played with a keyboard and mouse like traditional FPSes. Also while it isn't canon, AM2R is a good budget alternative for M:SR if you just watch a lore video or two on Aeion energy afterward." Naturally, I'm going to avoid getting murdered by Nintendo, so I won't say it.

I think Zero Mission is the best starting point for new fans. It has a lot of hand holding elements, but it doesn't baby the player. It more just helps the player acclimate to the gameplay style of the series. (Also, Zero Mission is the best 2D game, better than AM2R and Super Metroid, I said it.) I also think Prime is a genuinely good starting place. The hint system is helpful for guiding players, but Prime also send players around the map a lot, which can ease players into the rhythm of returning to old areas when they receive upgrades. Prime is good for introducing players to Metroid's general flow, and that can translate to the 2D games. If preparing specifically for Dread, Fusion and Samus Returns are both worth considering as well.

@Jackelbeaver
@Jackelbeaver 3 жыл бұрын
I tell people: Start with Zero Mission. It’s going to let you know if you like the series or not while being a perfect introduction. Then play AM2R as your next game. It’s better for a first timer than AM2R and wont teach you contradictory gameplay lessons too early. It maintains the horror and thematic elements of the original while building on what you’ll have learned from Zero Mission, letting you excel with familiar gameplay in a more segmented campaign, since the chozo guidance training wheels are off for this one. Then play Super Metroid. You’ll have a strong appreciation for its story elements by this point. The baby interaction from the last game will leave you primed for how it’s story goes in this game. Having the encounter with space pirates at the end of zero mission and not seeing them at all in AM2R will make their return shocking. The player’s familarity with Zebes’ updated design from ZM will also make them feel like more of a competent badass as they have the same sense of place that Samus would, now that they’ve hit a full on open gameplay design in the series. Next is Fusion. The polar opposite of Super. Instead of an open world, it’s a strict, linear horror game where they have to deal with something that’s as strong as they were in the last game they played. The design shift will enhance variety to avoid the player feeling too much repetition from their fourth game in a row, as will the fusion suit’s changes in abilities. All of the references to past games will hit hard and, if they got the 100% ending to AM2R, they’ll have the reveal of the X Parasite as a reward for their diligence. From there, if Dread isn’t out yet, which is what the next game to play would obviously be when it’s out, I’d say branch out into the 3D titles. Other M might not put them off at this point due to it’s similarities to Fusion and how someone coming at it from the JP games might not bounce off as hard as Prime fans do. Getting more into the story of Samus’s character and who Adam is might actually work if played now, since the Prime games are what pushes Samus as a silent protagonist. The 2D games would have given them alot of samus’s thoughts and even dialog up to this point, so that aspect of Other M might not feel as weird for them at this point. Gameplaywise it has alot of elements of the faster paced sakamoto metroids, while also introducing light versions of the Prime POV elements to maybe work decently as a transition to the series for players who start with the 2D quadrilogy. Prime Trilogy is a good take on the 3D design of the series and great games in their own right. All 3 games give you a good exploration of the chozo, space pirates, galactic federation, and universe as a whole. Samus Returns, I think, works best as a curiosity than a replacement for Metroid 2. It throws out alot of what made that game special and introduces things that kine of step on the toes of Super Metroid’s impactful moments if you don’t already know about them. It works better as a fanservice game for players of the 2D and Prime series. It doesn’t have the horror elements, the game design emphasizes more of a prime way of approaching gameplay than how the 2D series balance usually works towards speed and rewarding aggression (especially because Dread looks like it’s going more for rewarding aggression than patience in terms of its mechanical changes, power inclusions, and gameplay balance changes it seems to be making), and it’s just a much more difficult game than anything else in the series, other than the original versions of Metroids 1 & 2, that is. I don’t think it works as a first time through the series game, but as something to tide you over for dread, it’s more impactful as a fanservice game for people who know the series better. And if you’re STILL hungry and aren’t still replaying the 2D games for better endings, give Metroids 1 & 2 a shot for curiosity’s sake. TL;DR: Main: MZM, AM2R, SM, MF, MD. SIde: MOM, MP1, MP2, MP3, MSR, M1, M2.

+LOLey Metroid: Other M is a great game. AND it's a great METROID game as well. Most people will never say that but I will. It was the experimental title that LED to what they did in Samus Returns. Samus didn't do physical melee attacks (outside of Smash) until Other M. Without Other M we would've never gotten to the AM2R bootleg & the official Metroid II remake Samus Returns. And without Samus Returns we would've never gotten Metroid Dread with Mercury Steam co-creating it. Other M gets way too much hate for my liking. As much as a failure Wii U may have been as a console, you cannot deny the impact it had on the industry as well as the amazing library, both physical and digital. Truly the most underrated console in my opinion. It is by far the best console for any Metroid fan to own because of how many titles it had from our beloved franchise (and it brought us ELMA). You could not have said it better. "You could not live with your failures. And where did that bring you? Back to me."
@johnlucas1543
@johnlucas1543 3 жыл бұрын
+Nintenno Collector Wii U was what Switch became. The 1st Home Handheld Console. That console did A LOT of things right. But what held it back was the clunkiness of its Wii control vs. U control & discs instead of cartridges. The other stuff people say about it like marketing & confusion over it being a peripheral would've been solved if the Wiimotes & Gamepad were connected yet interchangeable like the Switch is. Wii freed people hands by having loose-handed controls where you can play with your hands at your sides relaxed. Wii U went back to the NES-styled plank that fixed your hands in front of you to play the game. So the Wii U in every way was a contradiction in its design & message. Wii for everybody. U for yourself alone. Even phonetically the name is the inverse of each other. Wii = "ooh-ee". U = "ee-ooh". Then discs (for Wii backwards compatibility) limited its Handheld ability vs. its Home ability. So it couldn't be as portable as it should have been. It was more fixed to the Home instead. Effectively it stands now as a Switch prototype that needed more time in the oven to prove its Home Handheld concept. But Wii U gets its revenge by being the damn near ULTIMATE Nintendo console for games. Put that with the 3DS & you got everything you need. It took them long enough to recognize its hidden greatness.

Took me a while before I was able to play Super Metroid though, found it quite difficult to get on board with the control scheme actually. The Missle/Grapple toggle is probably my least liked aspect of that game. If they made Super more like Zero Mission without the chozo statue hints that'd be perfect for me. I like how Pinball has its own tier above S when you showed the tier list. But for real, people write it off as "Metroid Prime but Pinball" but you're more playing as Samus in her Morphball in a pinball table rather than just being a Metroid themed Pinball. At any time in gameplay, you can lay bombs and power bombs to kill random Tallon IV bugs and even take damage from random Metroids that show up from time to time, and even outright die and lose a ball without having it cross the bottom of the screen. This sets it very much apart from other pinball adaptations like Pokémon Pinball or uh, Mario Pinball Land. It even has a story progression similar to Metroid Prime, with boss battles and everything, and the game does have a definitive ending you can reach once you get good enough, before looping back to the first couple levels so you can keep grinding for a high score. It's a pretty amazing pinball game and being on the DS means the vertical screen layout is used to great effect, so you aren't confined to a tiny board or a scrolling screen, and instead always have the whole board in view. Highly recommend to pinball enthusiasts and Metroid fans that don't feel like speedrunning Super Metroid for the nth time but still wanna play some Metroid.

In anticipation of Metroid Dread, I have been replaying all the 2D Metroid games on my 2DS XL! Metroid: Zero Mission, Samus Returns (great remake!) Super Metroid, and Fusion. What a ride it's been replaying all the classics! So stoked for Dread, it only took Nintendo 20 years!!!

I started with Metroid Zero Mission. Why this one? Selected at random. I beat this one then Metroid Fusion, and became in love with the franchise. I'm now playing Super Metroid. Maybe I'll try one of the Metroid Prime games after.

Metroid 2 on the OG puke screen colored Gameboy was my first Metroid. I do have to say in the remake they change the atmosphere drastically. I didnt feel as alone and on an alien planet. It's much more colorful and it makes it seem like a planet full of some life and it's less alienating of the player.

I believe I got introduced with the original Metroid on Brawl before tryin Super Metroid out on a high school emulator (I'm not joking. One of the servers had a number of games and emulators on it.) before being brought in in earnest with Metroid Prime Trilogy (the steelbook one, no less!).

I recommend fusion for first timers. Zero is also great. SR is awesome, but it is not for first timers. Super is critical, but it is not friendly to newcomers.

Fusion isn't great for newcomers imo because its story isn't as impactful without playing the other games first
@mori2037
@mori2037 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenjaminAnderson21 eh, fusions story is actually pretty disconnected from the other games. your main threat is completely new and isn't really tied to the other games. of course if you play the other games you'll recognize stuff like ridley, the omega metroid, and the animals you save, but prior knowledge of those things aren't needed to make the story satisfying. if say that the only game needed to make the story feel complete is other m, which, you know, blegh.

My first was the NES Classic cartridge on GBA. It was fun, but it didn't make me a fan. Then I got Zero Mission years later, and it blew me down. Having a history with the original just made it even more satisfying and impressive.

For me now it definitely be like Zero mission > Fusion > Samus Returns > Dread and I have trouble placing in super honestly. I think zero mission is the best first game to start out but I personally found super hard to get into after the just much better control from zero and fusion.

Metroid is a Super series where you have a Return of Samus in every game. Ane every time Samus Returns, it's like a Fusion of all previous games. I know this Echoes the sentiment of Others out there, but it truly is a Prime series. The only thing to Dread about it is save file Corruption.

In my opinion I think Will U is one of best console in the Nintendo bc it’s one of the first ever games I’ve played and full experience (unlike the DS,and will, 3DS) only console I mostly play enjoying few games of Nintendo Land, Zelda the WindWaker, Super smash bros,and Super Mario World. But besides that also with it’s combination of another game consoles makes it way better,I really enjoyed it. I might have played Nintendo games at the wrong time ,but I love it as part of my childhood.

Crocomire sounds a bit different. Also, from what I have heard, the best ones to start with are either Fusion or Zero Mission. Personally, I can’t remember if I started with Metroid 2 or Prime 3. Something that I just realized is that when Ai Adam talks about someone in the Federation who could believe Samus for doing the right thing at the end of Fusion, Anthony could be the one.

Metroid Prime Hunters is probably the game I've sunk the most time into, because of the multiplayer. it was easily a 9/10 for me but I'm not sure if you can play the multiplayer these days. I'd recommend playing it on the original hardware (or at least on the 3DS if you know how) because of the control scheme. the clip in this video is the worst way to control it, to need to use the "thumb pad" that is attached to the DS's hand strap. that way you can use the touch screen like a traditional thumbstick. i also believe there are things you need to touch on the screen like changing missiles which just wouldn't be ideal if you're playing/emulating without a touchscreen. one of my all-time favorite handheld games!!!

Honestly, I would say the best place to start for someone looking to get into Metroid has to be the game with the highest value-for-money ratio, which has to be Super Metroid on the Switch Online library. You get it for free and it’s a timeless classic that will let you get more than a good idea of what Metroid is all about. And after this free game you can then look around for other Metroid games you might want to pay for.

Metroid Dread is what introduced me to the series, but for lore reasons I decided to play Super Metroid first. The bosses were hard, (especially Crocomire, I actually had to backtrack to get some more Missiles after you killed me 20+ times). Also, the navigation is also hard at some places, but you just go where the game takes you.
