"We don't need to worry about the circle of fifths to know .... the chords in a key". Hallelujah. Too many teachers just teach the circle of fifths because they had to learn it. Great videos. But when the chord progressions come up, like at 10:30, why are there 'b' in front of some?
@justinburnett2173Ай бұрын
I think its because it is in relation to the major scale degrees (I ii iii IV V vi vii°) so the notes in the natural minor scale degrees in relation to that is to flatten the 3rd, 6th and 7th degree hence the bIII, bVI and bVII but those chords are major in this context so its giving you the full picture.. Kind of new to this so a shot in the dark but makes sense to me plus I heard the best way to get an answer online is to post a wrong one first. Goodluck!

Eric, dude... thank you. I have been playing guitar for 10 years now and I have been beating my head against the wall that is music theory for the last 6 of those years. I have tried multiple teachers, I've heard all the acronyms, I've tried convincing myself that I'm actually having fun and that everything was alright. *insert dog sipping coffee in hell meme* It wasn't alright, and I fucking hated it. The way you break this stuff down is so concise and clear, and it's like I'm hearing it for the first time in a language that makes waaaaay too much sense. I've spent the last 3 days on your first video and this one just rebuilding the foundations, and the amount of scaffolding and connections I've made IN JUST 3 DAYS is incredible. Thank you so much!! I do have two questions if I may?: 1. Why are you calling the (2) chord a "m7b5"? I'm struggling to understand why it's not just a "regular" chord (i.e. "B" or "G"). I can get the minor aspect comes from the scale, but where's the 7b5 coming from? 2. What's the outro song on this video called? Again, thank you!!
@EricHaugenGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Aha the song at the end is a jam I did over Drive-by Truckers "Goddamn Lonely Love." The ii chord in A minor is a diminished, when it's just a triad. B D F However, those are very hard for guitar players to grab so he add the 7th, the A. Thereby creating the m7b5 chord. It's annoying and very confusing!

Yay! It really is true that there a handful of concepts that we NEED to know, and a whole bunch of academic jargon that's not necessary. The problem is that many jazz and metal teachers fail to see this, and speak to all students as though they are like themselves. Lucky for you, I'm a hipster luddite! I grew up on classic rock, and then got into weirdo indie stuff :-)

Man, and again I've learned so much and with ease and fun; it goes to show how much a good teacher can do and you sure as hell are one! I get so easily bored or distracted or confused by others, but I could listen to you talk and actually understand stuff all day long (ok maybe not all day long, but you get me). Seeing things like the minor and major (and weirdo) chords from the major scale here, but in a slightly shifted manner, really makes for 'wait a minute, I think I got it'-moments, and those are the best ones. Also just playing around with that little theory that I've learned from the two videos so far is so much fun and lets me create such cool things; i - ii - iv - iii/v (the last ones share a bar) sounded really nice to me and just playing with it and trying to play them in different keys was a blast. Simple stuff, but for me its all new and magical. I really have been missing out with theory and I'm glad that I can now learn a little tiny bit. Thank you so much!

You're awesome Eric. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Your instruction method is so considerate of your students - many times I feel like music teachers take a lot of theory for granted when trying to teach, either because they are too lazy to fully explain everything or because they are truly incapable of getting down to their students' level. You always take plenty of time to explain every detail, and what's more, you explain your method too. You have respect for your students and it definitely comes across in these videos. Thank you!

Allright, got it :-) F is the 6th Chord in in the A Minor Scale, so I can play F Lydian or F Major Pentatonic (wich is within Lydian) wich is all the same as A-Aeolian. So I can play technically a Major Scale within a Minor Song. I guess that‘s what I meant in the other Video. Thank you! Opened my mind!

Yes! With one caveat: playing chord to chord to chord only works when there's plenty of TIME on each chord. If the progression is moving fast, your brain will explode trying to keep up!

lots of great info in there...Im just getting back to your videos. So Bmb75 is moveable. I saw you using different fingering for this chord.

Yes good lesson. I really have trouble making my solos sound nice- flowy - work with chord changes - etc etc. Got the scales need the feels now.

My main advice - and I gotta make a vid about this: play cinematic! Think thematically and soundscapey, and listen to what you're doing while you're doing it - try to get away from the desire to sound like a bad mofo and just play pretty notes!

Another brilliant lesson - I can feel my brain powering up 👍

Yes! That's what I love to hear! I try so hard to use minimal jargon, and de-mystify music theory - to me it's just a cookbook!

Extremely useful survey of minor scales and chords. The chord progression material definitely augmented my understanding. Thanks man! I play a fingerstyle arrangement of "Jockey Full of Bourbon" based on John Hammond's version. And, Dutch Pink is actually more of a yellowish color - who knew? Need to dust that song off today. :-)

Good lesson Eric and great hat. Can you do something about string damping one day? I know my scales now (thanks to you) but I always get the previous string ringing out
@tephros193 жыл бұрын
I struggled with that too! A few things that helped me out: 1) Slow down your scales and really focus on transitioning without noise. 2) This video from Justin kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoSzmId3ds6DrZY

Yeah! As Tyler suggested, slowing down is key (also I'm sure Justin's vid is good too). I've gotta do a vid on fretting hand thumb/wrist placement - I notice some students who were mostly self taught have a very tight grip, and can't open their fingers. Guitar is a stupid weird wonderful instrument to play, but there's all sorts of tiny errors with body movement that can really hamper smooth playing. Keep it slow and loose :-)
