This was a great video, Scotty. Surrendering a pet is unfortunate and there are legitimate reasons this may happen, so thank you for providing information in a compassionate way.

Sadly, not a lot of people realise the difference between a rescue and a shelter so thanks for doing a video on this. Yes, when my landlord decided to sell up my home last year and I needed to find somewhere new to live it was so hard and stressful, hardly any places to rent and non suitable for my needs and that would let me keep my hamsters. At one point all my stuff was going to have to go into storage and me and my 2 hams were going to have to move into the back room at my mum's. If they couldn't both fit my friend was going to have Comet but I would have been devastated not seeing him everyday. Luckily at the last minute I found somewhere and the hamsters even have their own room now. I was soooo lucky. So my heart goes out to anyone in a life situation they have no control over. Times can be tough sometimes.

I fostered 2 lovely baby boys for a local shelter last year. When it was time to find a home for 2 boys that I was fostering, I was allowed to search for a suitable home myself. I stumbled upon a great piggy mom who had 4 boys at the time and had many piggies through the years. I am so grateful to her as she kept the babies from having to go back to the shelter and get adopted by someone who has no idea how to care for their new pets. If I had to surrender my own piggies I would probably look to my circle first as there are no shelters anywhere close to us.

Great and needed video. I ended up with my herd by rescuing two pregnant sows. I originally thought I would pass them on to a more knowledgeable rescue, I literally had nothing prepared. When I found out none of the rescues in my vicinity ( my search radius was 300 miles) due to one of the girls being a satin, I decided to keep them and figure it out as I went. Luckily I stumbled on Saskia and you. After watching MANY videos, lucking into fabulous deals on 4 midwest cages and A LOT of trail and error the piggies and I have been successful. It has been almost 4 yrs since I rescued my girls. Sadly our beautiful satin momma past a few months ago, but I have a healthy happy herd of 4 girls and a neutered male. I do have to make adjustments on budgets and vacations, or lack of rather, but it's what I signed up for. Plus the the little buggers make me laugh everyday no matter how crappy my day is going. They're worth their weight in gold just for that.

We adopted all our pigs from a local shelter while living in Washington. We've recently moved to Michigan, and one of the first things I did was look up local guinea pig rescues. I found one, and they even helped connect me to a local farmer for bales of meadow hay! They also helped me with finding a vet. Thank you for your continued compassion and information.

Great video, a lot of people don’t know that there is a difference between shelters and rescues. We’re seeing such an increase in owner surrender requests. Our hearts really do go out to people who have hit awful circumstances and have no choice but to re home. We’d also like to remind people that if you for your animals from a rescue they will take them back, or at least reputable rescues will.

So true about shelters. I got a hamster last year from the local shelter and they had large unsexed group of hamsters living together in a medium sized enclosures with mommas and babies all mixed together with other hamsters!!! Some enclosures had individual or small groups, but that one enclosure was a nightmare of crowded fighting hamsters with mommas nesting in the open with their newborns. The person who had knowledge of small pets had been on medical leave and the other volunteers did not know how to take care of those types of animals. The poor dwarf I rescued had bad bites and ended up dying two weeks later because of her injuries. I am now on a waiting list for a reputable hamster breeder, but I am also on the look-out for a rescue hamster.

Hi Scotty. Thank you for your content. You have been a tremendous resource. Our college age daughter rescued a guinea pig from someone on campus. We have subsequently inherited said guinea pig, as our daughter recognizes her schedule and apartment are not conducive for raising a guinea pig. My husband and I love animals and of course will care for this guinea pig now. We are also looking to rescue another guinea pig, so our little guy has a friend. My burning question right now is this ...... Is it better to have a 2x5 cage down in our kitchen, where he will be more central to our family, or a bigger cage, a 3x6, upstairs in a spare bedroom ? Thank you SO much for your time and insight. We appreciate your help. 😊

This is something I worry about a lot: if something was to happen to me, what would happen to my guinea pigs? I live alone and don't have a social circle (my choice). I have family but if I died suddenly, my neighbours would probably be the first people to notice I wasn't around, but that could be days, weeks or even months before alarm bells rang. That'd obviously be far too late for my piggies. I'd never voluntarily give up my guinea pigs but I am beginning to think maybe I need to have a serious conversation with my neighbours and make arrangements for inevitable eventualities. Hopefully I've got a good few years left in me, but my age and health are past their best, and I'll be thinking hard about any guinea pigs I may adopt in the future. I'm seriously considering a will that stipulates whoever receives my house after I'm gone must look after my piggies for their natural lives, and I'll certainly leave instructions including your care guides as a reference. Sorry if that's a bit morbid, but it's a genuine concern of mine. Addendum: Sorry this is a downer, folks, but it's probably something that needs to be considered and discussed. No-one likes thinking about their own mortality but it happens to us all. I'm lucky I don't suffer from loneliness, but it's becoming an increasing problem (and all the issues around it) for the elderly.

I know exactly how you feel. I have literally lost sleep worrying what would happen to my piggies if I was suddenly gone. You can name a person in your will to inherit your piggies. My sister was named in the will of someone she would dogsit for to take her pupper if the owner's husband also died. The owner died of cancer, but the lovely doggo died the following year, long before the husband. It was very touching when my sister heard she had been named in the will. This was after the dog died that she found out. I guess if it could be a while before someone realizes you have passed, you may need to start some form of regular communication with someone that would then notice if that contact stopped. Whatever it takes to give your piggies a better shot of being ok.

That's what a will is for... But hopefully nobody will die suddenly like that.

Could you leave your keys with someone and have them call you twice a week? That would guarantee your piggies survival.
@avaggdu1

@@equestrianrosie Thanks. I'm glad (but not glad) that I'm not the only one with this worry. People noticing is my big concern. My piggies could probably survive for a week without additional food and water just from their hay and water bottles, but it's the "what ifs" that are troubling me. My neighbours are good people, and it's just the British reluctance to trouble other people that's held me back from imposing on them to keep extra eyes and ears out. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and speak to them for my piggies' sake. I'd gladly leave my house to my neighbours (for their kids); who wouldn't want a free house for looking after some adorable little squeakers! I don't have kids myself and all my family are doing very well for themselves on their own so don't need anything from me. I could always bequeath it to the rescue so they can expand, which sounds appealing to me.
@avaggdu1
@avaggdu1 Жыл бұрын
@@fitzguineavision What happens after is not the problem (i.e. rehoming them, etc.). I know the rescue I adopted them from would take them back, no questions asked, if worse came to worst. It's what happens in that period after I'm not there to care for them and someone else is able to take over. Hopefully, yes, but I'm in my 50's, have already brushed death about 5 years ago (no exaggeration), am not in the best health and come from a family with a history of genetic heart conditions. Sudden death through natural causes is not something I can ignore or hope for the best.

Thank you for this video. It will save the lives of pets from owners who don't know what to do and make uninformed choices. Also no one should drop off their pet in a cage over night. It gets cold. Their might be predators. Deliver your pet into the direct care of another person.

Very important information and you explained things in an easy to understand and compassionate manner. Not an easy topic but something you should put a lot of thought into. And agreed, you should attempt to think of ways to keep your pet. I can’t imagine what it would be like if I had to give away one or all of my girls. 😢🐾

I think, treating people like people, no matter what goes a really long way. Three of my piggies are open adoption because the families still really care about them. One was privately surrendered to me. One was at the rescue more than half his life and so the owner of the rescue asked me to take him and then we just kept him. I still update the owner of the rescue periodically regarding old lady Poppy Poptart. If somebody needed a temporary space for their guinea pigs, or if the rescue got a deluge, I would offer to foster some of the overflow pigs.

It would be great to have an online network with pet lover who may not have enough space to adopt rodents but would like to help out when owners go on holiday or have long work hours. And also places get cheap veggies. Just saying if it's just money or time that's the problem.

I feel it's better to rehome if you' feel you're not what your pets need. Plus eventually the second to last guinea pig will pass away. Than it's decision time surrender or continue the cycle. Or the owner's illness or death makes rehoming necessary.
