Stations towards the ends of lines 'above ground' often have their barriers left open at odd times of day (eg evenings) due to 'station staff shortages' so I suspect there's a fair bit of local travel taking place (illicitly) between such stations for free too!

A number of years ago go there used to be a bus service between terminals 1 2 3 and 4 but then the service was removed because of the underground. Heathrow had an agreement with London Underground (the days before TFL) that all its passengers could travel for free who was connecting to a different terminal and that's the reason this service is free.

Hi very informative and in your video showing the Heathrow direct line from the front cab the Heathrow gentleman says you can travel between the terminals for free. However if you look at the flight connections section on Heathrow website they never recommend leaving the terminal instead using the free buses even connecting between local flights. I wonder how much this gets used. The overwhelmingly vast majority of Oyster card holders are going to be London residents, who are therefore unlikely to be connecting through Heathrow, rather than departing or arriving. There will be some people who would have a card but not live in London and might pass through Heathrow, and that would be people who have previously visited London and picked up a card. That would rely on those people a) knowing about this, and b) remembering to find and take their Oyster cards. Would be interesting to know how often this actually gets used.

If you travel directly between the stations, you won't be charged. Going out and in at Hatton Cross, and then going to the terminals will still count as an outside journey. This means you can't really save anything if travelling to London, but it's a neat feature when in the need to go to a different terminal.
@drewwhite68657 жыл бұрын
How strange that it doesn't charge you for travelling between multiple times in a day, even though that's clearly not going to qualify as "interchange" for flight connections, At the same time, if you touch in at a Tube/Overground station, but then immediately catch a bus outside it, the Oyster & Contactless systems still charge you full fare and term it an "incomplete journey", even though they know you have just travelled away from there (this happens at stations with readers but no barriers, where people enter and discover delays, so don't think to touch out as they haven't been anywhere). To add insult, the online system doesn't allow you to choose the same station at which you entered as "the station where you ended the journey", even though it was!
@erkinalp7 жыл бұрын
Because it means full roundtrip and should be charged as two zone 9-1-9 trips.
@drewwhite68657 жыл бұрын
Erkin Alp Güney What do you mean by that? If you touch your Oyster outside the station it knows you have not stayed in the system, so there has been no Underground trip.
@drewwhite68657 жыл бұрын
Erkin Alp Güney If you are simply describing that such a charge is what happens, then fair enough, but I strongly disagree that it "should" charge you for any such journey if you have then left the station and used another service with the same card outside the station.

Are there other ways to travel between the terminals for free? I don't think it would be right to charge travelers who are only transferring flights and don't have an Oyster card but need to change terminals to continue their trip. At the Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport in Minneapolis, MN, USA the Blue Line light rail train, which has stops at both of the airport terminals, is free if you only go between the terminals, no ticket or anything required. If you go beyond the airport you have to have a ticket or use Metro Transit's (the company that runs the bus and train system in the Twin Cities) fare card. This is the only transportation between terminals and it operates 24/7, unlike the rest of the train system (when the rest of the system is shut down one train operates as a shuttle between the two terminals). Then again, turnstiles and gates are not used at any of the stations, unlike on the Underground in London.

You can always Walk

@@jimmytraveller IIRC You're not allowed to walk through the tunnel under the M4 from Terminals 2-3 that takes you out of the airport, you'd have to get a free bus. You're allowed to cycle.

It is rather old news ... it has been available for many years, probably from when T4 opened.

Could we get the link to the video where you publicize this, please?

Not public ≠ Not true. Oh, and here's a *publicly available* source which I found on a google search for your tastes. Way after T4's opening but still before this video was up: www.heathrow.com/file_source/Company/Static/PDF/Heathrowcommuter/travel_around_Heathrow.pdf

Thank you, Maverick. I am glad, though, that Londonist is bringing greater visibility to this, even if it's "old news".

+polchraine1 So, presumably you made a video about it? Link please.
