Hey rob ,ive got a thirty three year old hymer 660 ,had it 22 years , the engine is bomb proof ,Mercedes ,no turbo no electronics slow as hell on the hills but had our share of breakdowns but wouldn't be without it ,done quite a bit of travelling in Europe and looking forward to this year in France ,don't give up and keep going pal , we were in Scotland quite a few years back and this coach come hurtling round this bend right on the double white lines and took my mirror off, the road was quite narrow and he or she wasn't hanging about luckily i had a spare mirror with me ,we carry a few spares but you can't carry everything

Sounds like you’ve got a perfect van, sadly they don’t make them they used to, oh and yes it’s always good to carry tools and spares, but like you say you can’t carry everything

It'll all work out in the end ... Don't forget they'll have to rebleed the system and you'll have the cost of the 5 year antifreeze. Tbh I always blow air through my Alde system after draining it down in the winter. You'd be amazed at how much more water comes out.

I took my own boiler out and it took me 1 hour I always drained it completely, but there is always some water inside I found the problem was a connector pipe inside the boiler had frozen and pushed off I put it back on and it all worked perfect.

We have had troubles too. Last November we found water coming in above the overhead lockers. £800 later, a new interior panel, and everything resealed, we are dry as bone again inside despite the horrendous storms we've had. And now, one of our two leisure batteries is failing to charge via solar or when driving. We will be camping at Stratford Race course again 26th April for the show. Not expecting too much, but it will be a local weekend away. D+S x

Fingers crossed for the repair. Not sure about the layout of the new one you looked at as the back end won’t make a very big bed and you would still be climbing over each other? Seems more of a family layout. 2 lounges seems odd and still making beds up unless you use the drop down one . Agree you need a nice long sofa for evenings, have you looked at any big 2 berths ? Enormous long sofas in the right ones , big kitchen, big bathroom etc etc Or get a caravan like we did 😂 we have had dozens of caravans and mh’s over the years but love a nice big caravan as it’s lovely to get settled for a few nights. No good though for one nighters etc. Can’t wait to see if you swap and if so what to xx

Have you considered taking out the MB &G gold Motorhome warranty insurance. You can still take it out for three year old vans It covers all parts on the Motorhome. I have had it for 5 1/2 years after my original warranty expired I have made several claims totalling over £5000 without issue my last claim was for £1000 when air suspension failed. Your boiler repair would have been covered consider it going forward

When you add up all the cost & i am sure you will be happy once its fixed & your back on the road again ,i am so sure of it & i hope you both get better soon as i only know what ill health can do ! Never take life for granted because its to precious, keeping the motorhome home now makes more sence with the cost of everything going up in April with a big bang , & your health is more important too! Hi both. I don’t know what you’re actually looking for Lynn to be better than your m/h, but you should take a look at the one we have. Ours is a 2019 SWIFT BESSACARR 596 - 6 birth. Drop down manual bed over the dining area, end lounge which you can use as a double bed ( but we don’t) as there is only 2 of us. We love it because the table is always up in the dining room, but not in the way, because we sit in the lounge to watch telly. You can come and have a look at ours if youre ever in the Leicestershire area.

But we needed 6 seat belts for the grandchildren so made the step up to the 8meter motorhome. I couldn't go back now with the space we have like you, but loved the panel van. Alde are only at Northampton you can stay there overnight as they have ehu for 2 vans found them really good

Totally agree with you it’s so expensive running a motorhome on top of everything else and like you I had a brand new one but was still expensive and hadn’t even got to the stage of mot’s etc. I gave it up after 2 1/2 years and sold it and have gone back to a caravan and find it lot less stressful. Another thing I had in the back of my mind was the amount of money I had tied up in the van and what is going on with the world today trying to force motorists into these bloody (ev’s) or milk floats I call them! are motorhomes still going to be worth the money in a few years time? At least with the caravan I can bang it on a seasonal if towing becomes a problem in the future.

i was born in1952 in those Days Caravans & the VW Campers were considered as the Poor Mans Holiday , I was lucky , We Had a Timber Business ,, Now you can stay in Hotels cheaper than in Camper vans , Who would have believed that , back in the. 60s Tell them that,,, they would have looked @ you as if Horns were coming out your head.

At the end of the day you’ll have to get the boiler repaired, even if you’re going to sell it. Head of the Family. It doesn’t wash when l try that as well!

Hello guys its been a long time...... sadly it doesn't matter how much we all spend on leisure vehicles they all fall to bits and yes it's gutting as an engineer I would guess the heater core (like a small radiator) inside the unit has split/fractured the bumps you drove over probably was the last straw NOT your fault it should withstand such conditions but like everything in motorhome/caravan they just fall to bits one thing after another this would never be acceptable in the automotive sector but some how the leisure sector get away with it after many caravans and high end motorhomes we have now given up and built our own campervan yes less room internally nearly a divorce (lol) but now both agree best thing we ever did oh and no bangs rattles etc nothing gone wrong so happy (both of us) we made the right choice.... hope you get it sorted swiftly 👍

If you get another Van it's going to cost a lot more than this fix is! Who's to say you won't have even more problems with another?? It's the luck of the draw really! Hopefully the fix is not going to be too expensive? I'm from Kent, and moved up to Norfolk, I used to do a B&B in Dover to do Chrysler Courses! On one an old School mate took the Course I did, small world!

Alde are very quick, our boiler had a fault with its electronic control board. It had to be removed and sent to Alde for testing due to it being a warranty claim, they checked it out and decided to replace the electronic control board, apparently it only took them a few days to get it back to our dealer. That was the stumbling block, when the board arrived back the dealer had forgotten whose van it was for, we had the van at home and was still using it without hot water. The dealer worked it out when I rang them to see why it was taking so long to get an electronic board tested. Anyway it’s all working fine with the new board. If Alde repair the boiler there’s no reason it should be any less reliable than a new one. But £102 an hour for labour from the dealer it seems a bit much but I suppose it’s the going rate. Before I retired I was an aircraft avionics engineer licensed to fix Boeing 747’s and Airbus A340, A330 and A320 aircraft and the company charged third party companies less than that for labour when we worked on their aircraft. Mind you they could be paying £4000 for 12 hours to park their aeroplane on the hard stands outside our hanger, and more to park it inside! Best of luck, hope it’s all fixed very soon.

Hi and thank you, that’s good to know, I’m going to give Salop a call this morning for an update, but it sounds like Alde are a good company so you have put our minds at rest ☺️ The labour charge is expensive but I think it’s the going rate across the board and we do trust Salop to do a good job. Wow £4000 to park an aeroplane ✈️ 😮 That’s something you don’t think about normally so thank you for that ☺️

Hi Both, really sorry to hear it’s your boiler ☹️ - it’s so horrible that this has happened for you - such a worry when you don’t know what the costs are going to be to fix it 😞 Love the Escape that you’ve been looking at - for us, we’d get a part ex price with Salop’s and buy it 👍 that way you’ll be back in a warranty position and you can get back on the road with confidence 😄. Seeing you both look so down is hard - just want to give you a big hug Lynn - you look like you need one - hope you feel better soon - sinusitis is horrible - I suffer with it lots - I use Sudafed max which works a treat. You really need to look at a German van, we have had a dethleffs and now have a sunlight, trauma heating, we are now on our 4th motorhome and would not go back to a British made van, especially having watched you with all your problems you have had. Rob Lynn .i dont like the wet heating systems we have it our bailey the bedroom never gets hot .i think blown air heatings is better you only have to drain the water down . in winter if you cant keep the m/h on mains hook up over winter you wont stop it freezing.Roger.
