I feel like the huge success of Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled despite the similar controversy with micro-transactions (Devs said game wouldn't have them. Game comes out without em. Later, after reviews btw, game is patched to make it much harder to grind and implements micro-transactions because I guess activision had other ideas) might have caused other AAA game companies to try this with their racing games.

As some one who's into racing games, it's devastating to hear that one of the 3 mainstream racing games completely shit the bed. Like most folks can probably name off Forza, Need for Speed, and Gran Turismo. And honestly, there isn't much else outside of them. Most of the heavy sim games have been out for years and everyone's just been modding them. Hotwheels Unleashed from last year was honestly surprising. While the season pass stuff with it has been annoying on the whole it's a good arcade racer (It's been over a decade since the last numbered Ridge Racer). They at least kept true to there being no microtransactions for their in-game economy (on PC you can straight cheat the money no issue). Sadly I can almost appreciate them being straight up scumbags about it. Crash Nitro Fueled had an alright Microtransaction system (well as one can be) on launch. You could reasonably grind out for cosmetic shit. Then they later changed the rates and almost forced you into paying Microtransactions for skins. Not sure if it was ever rolled back. But what GT is doing is straight gross. And the fuck was he on about "using the mechanics over and over again to have enough money to buy a new car", it's a racing game. That's how shit goes, roundy round in the vroom vroom to tickle the lizard brain. Didn't even know about Chocobo GP, but as the Pet Semetary quote goes "Sometimes, dead is better". Hope Square doesn't have plans for any new Racing Lagoon stuff.

Out of curiosity, what is it you like about racing games like those. If an indie were to jump in, would they need the best graphic fidelity to pull a player like you in? Do they need the car brands? What do you want and need to be able to play the indie replacement to these series?

@@mediamonger6514 So long as you can identify a car as a car and the road up ahead, and not be like an Atari game. Actual Car brands are neat, but absolutely not needed. Just make some up ala Ridge Racer or even GTA and you'll be good. Or just have really out there cars ala Cruisn' games from back in the day. Most important would be driving physics, which is the hardest part to get right. Especially if you're doing an arcade racer. Should just Feel Good to play. I'd say play NFS '15 and then a Ridge Racer (from before Unbounded) and you should be able to see what I mean. Also story while over looked, can save otherwise mediocre stuff (Tokyo Xtreme Racer would be nothing without the characterization it gives to your rivals). And Elevate good to Amazing (Ridge Racer Type 4 and Racing Lagoon) But ultimately everyone has their own taste and asking 20 people will get you 20 different answers.

Nitro Fueled actually didn't even start with microtransactions at launch. There was the stupid Fortnite-style shop with the money you earn through racing, but the shop was relatively small and racing earned you more than enough. Most people had already cleaned out the shop within a month or two's time. It's when the updates started dropping that Activision Blizzard put in the ability to just buy coins and people got pissed. I mention them specifically because a lot of fans felt it was them forcing MTX onto the developers Beenox after release so AB could claim that it didn't have them on launch and dodge the ESRB classification. It's clear from how much love and effort was put into the MONTHS of free updates that they actually gave a damn, so most people speculate AB did it out of their typical greed. For what it's worth, Beenox introduced a 5x multiplier for coin earnings on weekends that lasts an hour. An actual hour of in-game racing, so you could play for like 2-3 hours and still be swimming in money. They went so far as to have an in-game item you could get every six races that gives you 200 free coins. It's not a perfect fix, but it was evident they did what they could under the circumstances.

The Paradise Remaster (which wasn't even all that great) is 5 years old, let alone original launch. Ridge Racer hasn't had a proper title in over a decade. F-Zero is just Captain Falcon is in smash. And when we do get some kind of hyped racing game not from Forza, GT or NFS, they tend not to even be that big. NFS is on haiutus cause of Dev issues and now GT is a trashfire with Microtransactions. And Horizon 5 isn't even all that great.

Gran Turismo was the sole reason I bought a PS1, my first console I ever purchased for myself, saving up for it as a kid. Stuck with PS2, and GT1 through 4 hold a place in my heart. I haven't bought a console since the PS2, since the PS and Xbox are now just proprietary PC's with slight benefits and drawbacks, rather than unique things. I was actually considering GT7 (if I could ever find a PS5), but pushing microtransactions through grind killed it for me, and then I just keep hearing additional terrible things. Nice job sullying the franchise, execs who made these decisions, and also thank you for dissuading me from lusting after a $500 ghost I can't get my hands on anyway.

Dissidia opera omnia, the f2p mobile gacha game, is actually less predatory than the full priced console game, you unlock characters for free and cloud is one of the first ones you get

The game is still Gacha and instead of characters you pull for weapons for those characters and they are almost all mandatory if you want to actually use that character to do content. The rates are more generous than most Gacha, the currency more available for free players than most Gacha, but it is STILL GACHA.

I always feel that the miserable payouts for wining a race on gran Turismo have been like that since GT1, just being offset by the prize cars and being able to win and sell them every time. You feel that way, yeah, but the scale is nowhere near the same. I saw a chart comparing grind time needed to acquire the most expensive car. For GT 1 through 4, it increased, but stayed under three hours or thereabouts. With GT7, it's 18 fucking hours. For the single most expensive car. With this patch it MIGHT be "down to" 9 hours. I'm pretty sure they even did this on purpose, so that the ludicrous 9 hours looks better in comparison to the batshit they started with.

Oh my God, I hadn't heard about Grand Turismo 7 until now. I don't care for sim racers, but to my fellow racing game enthusiasts...I am SO sorry... I'm glad that Forza Horizon hasn't done this, since when I first saw Horizon 4 I thought FOR SURE it would have a system like this in place. I'm buying Hot Wheels Unleashed, screw this. At the very least, GT7's developers have responded to the backlash with what can be described as a "hard backdown" with them planning to heavily increase payouts on many events, sport mode, and even allowing you to sell cars. (Which, you know, is advertised on the Playstation Store description) It doesn't help that Polyphony has a REALLY bad habit of releasing games in fucked up states and legitimately fixing them by the end of their life cycle. GT5 was asswater on launch, possibly even worse than GT7 aside from being "playable" offline. GT Sport was a straight-up non-game at launch for 60 bucks. But both games had a patch history that essentially corrected most of the issues and made for not only "fixed" or "better" games by the end of their life cycles, but legitimately "great" ones.

I told myself "Never again" after CTR Nitro-Fueled. I love that game, to the point of burning myself out on it- twice- and I'll be the first to admit it has glaring issues similar to Chocobo GP (less-than-stellar online, constantly rotating shop items, horrendously low offline gain of currency, still-not-high enough _online_ gain of currency, the infuriatingly slow loading times) But at least CTR didn't fucking delete my currency after every Nitro Grand Prix. That shit is insanely underhanded, and I hope no one else has to suffer that.

The most absolutely _wretched_ monitization practice I've ever experienced was in a mobile game I absolutely love. Dragon Quest Tact. Very rarely, they will give you a special banner- or rather, force it on you- where you get fifty summons, with five of them being guaranteed S-Ranks. The catch is that after you get your fifty summons, the game will ask you to either A; discard those summons and lose them. Or B; pay 3,000 in Paid Gems to keep them all. _That's well over $25.00 USD._ Here's the worst part; they *_DO_* offer to hold onto those summons for you until you can scrounge together the 3,000 Paid Gems to pay up, BUT doing so locks you out completely on all other Summon banners. You cannot even ignore this impossibly evil banner either, because as long as its up, all other banners will be inaccessible! You CANNOT do any more summons until you make the choice to either cough up the cash or say bye-bye to all the good shit you pulled. So far, this game sprung this shit on me twice. The first time it did was on my first day playing. I got so excited because I thought it was a gift for starting the game. No such luck- the game was actually just jumping on the opportunity to slut-shame me for being poor. _It. is. _*_Sadistic!_*
