With the beginning of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar looming nearer every day, those that intend to attend will be looking for accommodation.
But as a recent investigation by the Associated Press news agency revealed, there are not nearly enough hotel rooms to accommodate everyone at the tournament.
So where will they stay? David Goldblatt explains the current situation, Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

I went out to Qatar in 2014-2015 for work, and was involved some of the early ground engineering for the Lusail Iconic Stadium where the WC final will be held. It was literally a patch of desert 20 mins outside of Doha, the plan was to build the whole new city of Lusail specifically to host the final. The Qataris have basically built a city of (theoretically) 100,000 people just so they could have some extra venues. I’m pretty intrigued at whether they’ve managed to actually populate it or whether it’ll be a futuristic ghost town.

The other contenders for this World Cup were the US, Japan, South Korea and Australia - all of whom have hosted either a World Cup or Olympics in the last 30 years. None of these countries would have needed to waste any time or human lives building new stadiums from scratch and could have focussed on upgrading their current facilities. None of them would have had to deal with logistical problems like "Where will people sleep?" or "How do we air condition the outdoors so the players don't die in the middle of a game?" None of them would have been the subject of a sports-washing debate that has made the whole football ecosystem that much more toxic. FIFA knew all this when the decision was made and they still made it.

Western Europe is significantly further from the warzone than Qatar is from two areas of conflict (Yemen/ Iraq). We also don't particularly need oil and gas because any fans visiting would likely just use existing public transport to and from existing (and thoroughly tested) facilities. @@berlinocelot I think it makes a lot of sense creating more of a regional focus rather than one based on countries' borders. This opens up many possibilities for smaller nations (who might still have a large presence in football) to organize such a large tournament. In that respect, a Gulf-state World Cup would have actually made sense, combining Qatar with Bahrein and the UAE. This would also be more sustainable as less facilities would have to be built just for the World Cup, to be left to fall apart afterwards and would mean less teams, personnel and fans have to be flown around the country (of course this is not the problem for Qatar, but it was for Russia and Brasil).

Not really. You see accommodation would never be a problem because 1) Cricket World Cup only has 10 teams and bar fans of 2 or 3 nationalities won't turn up in huge numbers. 2) US have enough accomodations already. Also West Indies are already a cricketing nation hence they already have many stadiums. If the US really really need to host some games they only need a stadium or 2 which I think they can make in 4 years time.

Personally, I really looking forward to this tournament for a long time, back when my country also bidding to become the host. It make no sense to held World cup here but they say they will build a very huge air conditioner. Back then the stadium haven't been built also, and some of them will take place in a city that haven't exist back then. This is very exciting, let's see how money resolve the problems. But after several years? If qatar don't regularly held big tournaments, i don't know what will they do to the hotels and stadiums. I believe they will still take care of these, even the money is not small, but nobody know what will happen when we all use electric vehicle in 10 years, maybe by that time qatar already successfuly selling their tourism and creative economy.

Maybe they can house the players in the same buildings and conditions as the people who built the stadiums, maybe that will change their mind about going there in the first place.

I don't have any way to back this up, but I have a feeling this World Cup is going to be a $hit show of epic proportions at least off the pitch. I am sure the venues, media centers, and other structures used for official functions will be fine but stories like this about where the average fan is going to sleep or how alcohol use be fans get treated lead me to believe there are going to be some bad stories coming out of this event. Of course, this does not include the thousands of migrant workers that died building those facilities.
